Another outstanding volume of ‘The Founder of Opus Dei’ trilogy! This one takes you through the exciting and heart-wrenching years of he Spanish Civil War as well as the post-war years as Opus Dei started to spread throughout Spain like wildfire.
I really love this historical trilogy / biography and consider it one of my favorite series, particularly among biographies. Highly, highly recommended!
Now I finally understand what Pedro Casciaro kept saying aboout dreaming and your dreams will fall short- it just always seemed to not make sense before....
But anyway, how St Josemaria and the few students who had joined the work by then( Isidoro, Pedro Casciaro, Chiqui) managed to survive the Spanish Civil War is simply amazing! The joy they still have even in the face of hardship is clearly evident and their amazing resilience as well. And of course my best part just had to be the letters and the way they were disguised- lunch with Don Manuel, this madman Josemaria....really heartwarming! And also how the Work took off with the women's branch. I loved the wooden rose...and I grew to know and like Isidoro and Chiqui(Jose Maria Hernandez Garnica) and Juan- as he took control whenever the Founder would feel as though it wasn't the right thing he was doing.
This second volume covers the decade of St Josemaria's life starting with the civil war and ending when he left for Rome in 1946. He suffered a lot of persecution during this decade and it was during this time that he undertook his infamous trek across the Pyrenees to the Nationalist zone. What jumped out for me in this volume was the account of Nisa González Guzmán, one of the first women members of Opus Dei who joined in 1941. I am very good friends with her niece who has told me lots of stories of her aunt including what a shock it was to the family that she joined this new-fangled organisation in 1941. There isn't a huge amount about Auntie Nisa but knowing more of her personal history through one of her blood relatives makes those few paragraphs really resonate.
