The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research

Rate this book

The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research, Third Edition, represents the state of art for the theory and practice of qualitative inquiry. Built on the foundations of the landmark First and Second Editions (1994, 2000), the Third Edition moves qualitative research boldly into the 21st century. The editors and authors ask how the practices of qualitative inquiry can be used to address issues of social justice in this new century.

Disappointing

I used this text for a qualitative methods course in my doctoral program. There are a few chapters in this 44 chapter, 1000 page book that are exceptional. However, most chapters are apologetics for the method and the socially marginalized. Qualitative research has a place in so many applications, from business and economics to sociology and political science. The book plays to every stereotype and criticism of qualitative research and doesn't transcend the objections with balanced research or writing. A disappointing echo chamber when do much could have been done to bridge the gap between the perception and reality of the method.

At 1200 pages I don't think you can call it a handbook anymore.

This book is truly comprehensive but I felt like the orientation toward social issues was...disorienting. I understand what the editors were going for here but this was not the resource I had hoped for. For example one section on research funding, written by an author from Australia, continually refers to Australian governmental funding sources--precluding applicability to a larger readership. This method of pasting together essays has been done in a more holistic manner by other editors.

Although I bought the first edition for a 'Research in Language, Literacy and Culture' course almost ten years ago, I've returned to the text many times for quick insights and meaningful quotations in accessible language.

A bit old (2005) and sort of focused on social issues. An essential resource for researchers in the field, offering comprehensive insights into qualitative research methodologies. It offers an in depth and wide array of methods and epistemologies.

Informative, but somewhat restrictive in its archaic construction. However, a good starters book when delving into Qualitative Research to get your historical concepts and basics settled.

Denzin & Lincoln's book is an informative and a good example of qualitative book that gives example on its own. That is, it exposes critical hegemony in a verbose but understandable way without dumbing down the process and methods. While reading the book I feel like I am not being lectured rather I feel that the author is over my shoulder walking me through the concepts, providing me a vivid description on qualitative research. At the same time, the book touches sensitive topics such as queer theory, social justice, and narrative inquiry which is seldom accepted as a 'science' in positivist-dominated scientific community. More so, it lets you appreciate that research (qualitative at that) informs public policy, equalize inequities, and correct an infractioned scientific system. After reading the book, I feel that I must write a qualitative research because it is relevant, important, and it negate a parochial vantage point.

This was used as our textbook in a qualitative research class, but I thought reading the whole thing was inefficient. There are many strong chapters that provide overviews of certain aspects of the field and glimpses into theoretical perspectives. But, it looks at various disciplines using qualitative research such as anthropology and nursing, not just education. So, some of the chapters just served to confuse, not enlighten my understanding of how to use qualitative research in education. The articles in the handbook are not necessarily for the newly innitiated, they are dense and academic. The subsection of critical articles was informative.

Too heavy on critical theory, not enough guidance on what this looks like in the field or how to actually do it. I was disappointed.

Gah!!! This thing is massive (over 1000 pages). Some articles were useful, but I wish the professor just had us read the individual articles and not buy this massive thing.

t's a very good book for people who have a misconception on qualitative analysis. It gives a good classification of the different types of qualitative analysis so readers can have a full pictures of what they are all about of their past, present, and future, the merits, deficiencies, and functions of each type of qualitative analysis.
