I still don't know how to rate or review this book, not sure of my feelings by the end (huge cliffhanger). When I read the sample it was like my dream world: human woman abducted by aliens and taken to a huge City-ship inhabited by thousands of alien races, in other words, my perfect science fiction story. The first chapters were engrossing and I was ecstatic...But the more I read, the less enthusiastic I was: there are too long descriptions of unimportant things (instead of describing in more depth the alien races in the City, for example), the heroine becomes suddenly Superwoman because she can achieve anything imaginable (she becomes a healer tech, a pilot, she masters 0 gravity simulations, etc).

Then we have the Protectorit, the male main character, whose face is not revealed to the heroine because in his culture warriors hide their faces from strangers with a veil. Their relationship is rocky at best, and this is supposed to be a romance, but nothing romantic happened, nada de nada, zilch! No romance, no hint of passion...in fact, the heroine started to really annoy me because she, an allegedly intelligent woman, started behaving like an irrational moron, all impulses and no brains. Actually, both MC acted a little bit retarded.

The good in this book: the universe the author creates is wonderful, a multicultural melting pot full of technological advances...so cool! Also there's intrigue, corruption, conspiracies that are slowly developing, but we have to continue the series to know more about that. There are good secondary characters who help the h adapt to this new world, and through them we get to learn the Protocols that rule this civilization.

So, this is not a standalone book, we have to read the rest of the series to learn the rest of the story. I read in another review that there's no romance in the second book, either, and to me that's a key ingredient, like the spice in a recipe.

All in all, this author can write enthralling science fiction IMO, the rest is for you to decide.

Very long book. Could have used better editing to catch error and cut dragging parts. Ends on cliffhanger with very little progress in romantic relationship. Heroine is a bit of a Mary Sue. Next book doesn't seem to conclude things either.

This is one of those stories that are hard to put down. It is well written and organized. Excellent character development.

A really well written book, with some fast pacing and tight story. It's a typical 'humans in alien space' story, but some parts become a little over-wrought. Nevertheless a VERY enjoyable book that I would indeed recommend.

I love, love this series. This book has enthralled me. It is not often that I keep a book out to reread and savor, this book is one of the very few. Keep up the great work K.L. Tharp - I enjoy reading your amazing stories and plan to purchase the third book in the series.

I'd rather read a long story in a series rather than an insta-luv, one-and-done book you can finish in a day. If you like a rich sci fi world with a delicious slow-burn romance, take this one out for a road trip.

I’m guessing the author was trying to make the heroine strong, resilient, stubborn and very smart. She succeeded a little too well. The heroine is so ridiculously talented at everything that I don’t think a human like that has ever existed. Also, the pure ego you have to have to think “I’m in an emergent and dangerous situation in a completely foreign environment to earth, but my solution must be best so I’m going to sneak off, not tell anyone, and do it.” I mean, what?! Seriously?! Not only is that stupid, that means believing that you know better than everyone present, even though it’s literally alien to you.

But, despite a few annoying quirks to the book, I really started to like the story and the characters. There is no romance to this story, though it does have a soul mates kind of feel to it. I think the connection they are both fighting will be explored in the next book.

It was engrossing but long story with well developed world building , original unfortunately to a point. It was more to the sci fi than romance but I liked it ; the originality was killed by the star trek / space opera aspects . I also didn’t liked that the aliens society was very similar to human ones …
It was a little boring, lagged a bit in the middle and it took me a while to get engaged but overall it was ok because towards the end it became more interesting .
The good things : the author has more logical sci-fi explanations than in the old star trek movies and she did some readings re physics and other sciences like medicine ; Also her writing was fine ,there is good story and I really like sci fi old books feeling . So definitely I’ll continue the series…I got intrigued where is going…

This was a great read.

I found this book while looking for romantic Space Opera type books. While the romance is pretty slow burn it is very satisfying. A caveat though, the hero is flawed. His choices aren’t always the best, one particular scene jumps out as a bit of a deal-breaker for me. That said, I enjoyed the beautifully described universe and cast of characters and yes the romance too in spite of said action. I will be going to the sequel! A very good book.

Awesome First Book of a series

I randomly found this book and was glad. I read the whole HUGE book in one day!

I am hoping that things will be better for The MCs and that this will be a long series to come. Love the unique universe and I can't wait to start the next book tomorrow!

Hm. I think I have to read the rest of the series to figure out my true feelings. All in all, I’m glad that I stumbled upon this book. Though I have to say, the constant stubbornness and lack of honesty between the fmc and mmc made me want to hit my head against a wall for goodness sake.

After reading book 1, "The Protectorit" and immediately book 2, "For The Honor Of Black Roses", I feel humbled in trying to express the wonderful experience High Lady Kelly L Tharp gave to me.

I am a 69 year old pedantic, flute playing, robot building, grounded-for-love private pilot and hopeless romantic, that grew up with dreams of going to space.

The skill of the High Lady Tharp, designer of the universe, docent to life, to create, describe, animate, and explain a myriad of individuals and societies is unmatched by any author I have read. I grew up with Robert Heinlein; I have reached the pinnacle of joy, realism, and emotional release with High Lady Tharp.

While attempting to reconnect with my Scotch-Irish heritage long ago, I was wowed by a set of Irish fairy tales, to later learn they were written by an high lady of Ireland. "The Protectorit" and "For The Honor Of Black Roses" brought a welcome warmth of the Irish into my life this week.

High Lady Tharp touched every part of my being with her writing skill. These books tell a beautiful story with mastery of pace, vocabulary, plot, humor, characters, cultures, physics, medicine and love in many flavors.

I've never read a book that brought tears of joy to my eyes so many times, and with such chest grabbing strength. These two books are immense.

p.s. The irony of the misspelling "mediation room" for "meditation room" was intentional?

Amazing science fiction story. Nice spin on abduction and the heroine didn't leave me unfulfilled. Sadly this is part one! On to the sequel; I'm so excited!

I give up at 75%. I was going to stick it out but then I learned that this was part 1 of a multi-book series.

I really like the sci-fi aspect of this book but the romance is soooo slow and the political maneuverings are giving me whiplash. Evidently things don't get more romantic than a few little teases until book 3. I just can't.

Awesome world-building, great characters but needs an direction. It's 3 stories fighting for space in one and it's not always pretty.
