Rate this book
Like a road trip through the British countryside, Beyond Downton Abbey, Volume 2 - A Guide to Great Houses takes readers to visit some of the most impressive manor houses, castles and palaces in Great Britain.

There are plenty of reasons why people are attracted to the stately mansions of Britain: architecture, interior design, art, gardens, romance, culture and history. No matter the motive that brings each visitor to the threshold of a great house -- either in a book or on a tour -- what keeps us coming back are the fascinating stories about the families who lived there.

The immensely popular Downton Abbey television series has inspired millions of viewers with its captivating portrayal of life at a stately British home in the early years of the 20th century. But fictional Downton Abbey is just a tiny part of the story. Beyond Downton Abbey, Volume 2 takes you behind the scenes at more manor houses--equally intriguing, but very real.

Beyond Downton Abbey, Volume 2 is the best kind of show-and-tell guide, combining beautiful photography with helpful information. Whether planning a set-jetting trip to visit the film locations of a favorite costume drama, or you're simply an armchair traveler, you'll appreciate this book's extraordinary stories.

Learn about the origins of King Tut's Curse at Highclere Castle (where Downton Abbey is filmed); discover the link between a tiny gold Roman ring at The Vyne and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings; see how the small town of Bampton magically transforms into Downton Village; take a peek behind the curtain at the holiday home of the Agatha Christie, the Grand Dame of murder mystery; and look in on the opulent Rothschild lifestyle at Waddesdon Manor, which doubled as Haxby Park in Downton Abbey.

More than 20 great houses and gripping stories make Beyond Downton Abbey, Volume 2 a fun and fascinating read. This eBook includes 120 color photographs and links to additional online information.

This is the second volume in the Beyond Downton Abbey series. The first volume features the history and stories of another group of great houses in England and Wales. The first book is available in e-book format as Beyond Downton Abbey, Volume 1 and in paperback as Travels Beyond Downton.

This has more information for each house than Volume 1 had, so I thoroughly enjoyed it and have added many places to my "must see" list. It's time to get to England! (#1 on the list is The Vyne with the Roman ring that inspired Tolkien. How cool is that?)

View the British homes that have been the setting for various dramas and understand British history from a new perspective!

This extremely well written guide to notable British homes shows a glimpse of the people who built and lived in them and the interactions with film in recent years. The authors add just enough of the earlier residents back stories to give a historical context and lend a bit of intrigue. A simply fascinating book!
