One renegade captain threatens disasterHMS Truculent is a nuclear-powered, hunter-killer submarine, and one of the most deadly weapon systems in the world. Phil Hitchens is its distinguished British commander - who has broken away from a NATO exercise and embarked on his own darkly vengeful and deadly mission.Shadowhunter is the codename of the desperate sonar search for HMS Truculent, last seen heading for the Kola Inlet where the cream of Soviet sea power lies unsuspecting at anchor. Shadowhunter is Geoffrey Archer's nail-biting, authentic thriller of undersea battle and international tension - a chillingly credible account of the world brought to the brink of catastrophe.
It didn't flow very nicely; the style of skipping around different people's perspectives slowed it down and didn't really add to the intrigue. I had trouble really rooting for any of the parties.
Wow the attention to detail and 'inside information' about the submarine service and its tactics and problems just added to an already gripping plot. I'd forgotten who the author was for this book but when I reached the end and realised it was Archer, it was clear why he is regarded for his brilliance as a raconteur. Highly recommended as a great read, especially if you like action thriller material.
Amazing detail in his research. I'm ex Air Force and my son is a Submariner. This book made a great read because it is so carefully researched that it is very realistic, even though the plot is astonishing, almost too far-fetched. Geoffrey Archer is capable of creating a story that is on the edge of being credible and making it seem so real that you can't put it down.
Very impressed he did is research by God normally I don't like story's that bounce around but these where very well done short sweet informative to the story. I enjoy Submarine war fiction i and I loved this one I shall read it again before the years out good one

As an ex submariner, I was transported to my days on the old diesel/electrics. Nothing like this story ever happened to me or the crew, however it brought the smells, sounds flooding back.
Geoffrey Archer undertakes meticulous research into the background for his books. The result is that he provides believable scenarios the hold your attention.
I found this book very ordinary for a writer that is so well known and read. Characters, plot, tension very 2 star. I did like the Water and historical part of the book.
Very plausible story set in the late 20th century. Difficult to put down once you have started this spy story mixed with credible submarine operations.
A novel for readers of the Royal Navy Submarine Service.
Archer has an amazing knowledge of retail in every book of his that I have read and this book proves that. A MUST READ for members of the Royal Navy and anyone with an interest in the Navy.
