Another amazing Barbara Cartland novel. Until the half part of the book I wasn't sure about the romance part even tho the description of the Provence region in France was amazing, specially bc I know that area (a great coincidence I was not aware by chosing this book). But then Cartland deliveries her typical sugary romance and that is what I came for.

This was just okay. Very short book, interestingly a lot is spent on the description of the Camargue Region of France which sounds truly beautiful.

The heroine is young and rebellious. She is an heiress and resents her step-father’s attempts to arrange a marriage for her with someone he considers suitable.

The stepfather is kind and generous and he is a French Comte, so naturally wants an aristocratic husband for the heroine as well.

The heroine wants to prove to him that she is capable of choosing her own path in life and more importantly, her own husband. So she runs away, intending to take pictures of the horses and flamingos of the Camargue region. She plans to hold an exhibit of her photographs in Paris.

She succeeds in getting away. As she tries to take photos of her first herd of horses, she almost gets trampled on by the Hero’s horse. He helps her out, and brings her to the Mas (like a farm house) where he has been staying. He tells her he is on vacation.

He takes her around so she can take the photos that she wants. Of course they fall in love. But the Hero is a bit concerned because he does not have the means to marry anyone. He has had a job but recently, his mother has been ill and now all his money has gone to her treatment. So he is not in any position to support a wife.

The heroine kind of mentions that she has some money, but the Hero is adamant, he will never allow his wife to support him! The heroine is very apprehensive that he will not offer to marry her when he finds out she is an heiress, so she makes him promise that he will marry her despite any obstacles. She already foresees objections from her step father.

The Hero of course promises that he loves her and will marry her and that together they will overcome all obstacles. He tells her to go home ahead and that he will follow and present himself properly.

Of course when the heroine goes home and confronts her parents w her determination to marry the Hero, they object since they do suspect he is a fortune hunter.

But soon after the Hero arrives and is announced as Lord Linslade. So alls well ends well in BC land! 😂 I kinda knew it already!

As it turns out, the Hero was not exactly lying. He also just found out (So fortuitously 😳) that his uncle and cousin both just passed away so the title is his now.

Yes…so love Dame Cartland for tying up all loose ends for an always predictable and oh so happy ending. Ahh but then thats why I read her books. 😍❤️❤️

Used to read BC novels for guilty pleasure as a teen, before loving Jane Austen. she made me fall in love with historical romance... funny this is the first I read in 25 years or so and it kind of disappointed me not only as a photographer (the heroine had a portable camera that she hardly knew how to use but thought she could mount an exhibition in Paris) but I expected a more witty protagonist... I guess Elizabeth Bennet has spoiled me LOL

I liked first part of the story more. When heroine storemed into the night in the clear atempt to drawn in the sea I was like WTF? And when hero decided to stay with her after that. And when he magicaly became rich with his uncle and cousin death. Before that it was rather nice, although all the way I was waiting for the news that he was pretending and is rich landlord afterall.

Though following the same general storyline, I found this one very different for Barbara. I liked the setting and I appreciated Barbara’s positive depiction of Romani people (though I think she exoticised them a little bit). Overall I found it to be quite different for her but still quite standard

It was impossible for Valda to do what her stepfather asked.

He was French and the idea of arranged marriage came naturally to him. But she was not and the thought of being wed to a man she did not love--did not even know--repulsed her.

"But Valda," her stepfather cautioned, "you have never chosen a gown without help. Do you really imagine that you are capable of choosing wisely the man to whom you will be married for teh rest of your life?"

Valda would show him just how capable she was. She would run away--with the help of the gypsies camped on her stepfather's estate. She would choose a life on her own--a life of independence, adventure and love.

I do believe I read this once as a young girl. I have wanted to sees a gypsy camp and the wild horses ever since. When I picked it up to read it this time, I was less impressed with how the hero magically has his own money suddenly, rather than needing to swallow his pride and letting the heroine be strong and share her wealth as she saw fit.

The gypsies and horses though? They still stir my inner wanderer!
