FBI Profiler #3

The Next Accident

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, whose first three novels rocketed onto national bestseller lists, is one of today’s hottest suspense stars. Now, in her powerful hardcover debut, she takes us on a desperate manhunt for a sadistic killer who preys upon his victims’ innermost fears — just before he claims their lives.

What do you do when a killer targets the people you love most? How do you protect them when he knows their most secret fears and hidden desires? When he knows just when to strike? And, most of all, when he knows the same about you?

These are the questions that haunt FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy. The official police report concluded that his daughter’s death was an accident. Amanda Quincy was driving drunk when her car careened out of control.

Pierce knew about his daughter’s problem with alcohol. He knew about her loneliness and insecurity. And so, he is certain, did the man who killed her. Quincy is prepared to risk everything to learn the dangerous truth about Amanda’s death — and there’s only one person willing to help.

Rainie Conner knows all too well the dark side of the human heart. An ex-cop haunted by her own violent past, she had once been paired professionally — and personally — with the brilliant, supremely logical FBI profiler.

Quincy had helped Rainie through the harrowing case that shattered her career and left her charged with first-degree murder. Now it’s time for Rainie to return the favor.

But this killer is like none these two hard-boiled pros have ever encountered. This twisted psychopath has an insatiable hunger for revenge ... and for fear. He isn’t satisfied with taking his victims’ lives. He wants to get inside their minds, strip them of every defense, render them powerless to resist.

He’s already killed twice; now he’s taunting Quincy and Rainie by making it no secret who his next victim will Quincy’s only surviving daughter.

The killer’s plan is chilling, brilliant, and unstoppable. The cops won’t help; the FBI can’t be trusted. As the clock ticks down to the final minutes of one unspeakably intimate act of vengeance, the only way Rainie can unmask this faceless killer is to step directly in his murderous path. She will become a murder waiting to happen. She will be ... the next accident.

Sometimes all you really need to know about a book is that the bad guy is great— in the worst ways possible— and the pages practically turn themselves!! I can not wait to read the next one!!

PS- My one complaint— would a self-respecting, classy 48-year-old let herself be called Bethie? I think not.

I am a huge fan of this author's D.D.Warren books but I am finding it a little harder to get along with Quincy and Rainie. To be honest I do not actually like either of them but I will persist with more of the series - maybe they will grow on me!

The Next Accident is a clever and very suspenseful book and I did enjoy a lot of it. Just the two main characters and their unusual romance niggled me. I guess it all ended well and I now need to get into the next book and see where it goes next. It is quite possible I may end up giving it five stars!

Lisa Gardner takes a swing at the “revenge” theme and hits it out of the park!

FBI profiler Pierce Quincy’s daughter was an alcoholic. Two years ago, she left an AA meeting, fell hard off the wagon, and killed herself and a passing pedestrian when she drove her car off the road. At least, that was how the final police report read at the time but Quincy’s investigative instincts were not convinced. To put the matter finally (and objectively) to rest, one way or the other, he asked his friend (and possible lover? … but I digress!), ex-cop and now PI Rainie Conner, to re-open the case. Just as she starts to unearth some details and solid evidence that the death was something other than a simple DUI accident, Quincy’s ex-wife is brutally murdered. It would appear that there is a psychopath on the revenge warpath with Quincy and all of his loved ones on his target list.

Revenge, blood lust, and brutal serial murder are hardly innovative, original ideas for a suspense thriller plot but, omigod, Lisa Gardner has done this one up right, from first page to last. The culprit is brilliant. The character development is completely engaging – Quincy, his ex-wife, his second daughter (currently enrolled in a university psychology program with sights on a career in the FBI following in Dad’s footsteps), Conner, his FBI colleagues – all of them are fleshed out in absolutely convincing fashion and lifted off the page into a stark reality. Dialogue is realistic. The romantic byplay between Conner and Quincy is heartwarming, never salubrious or saccharine, and certainly not intrusive to the main plot-line. The final reveal is a complete and totally shocking surprise!

Just be warned, fellow readers, THE NEXT ACCIDENT should NOT be read out of order. For maximum enjoyment, take the time to build up the back story in the previous two installments in the series, THE PERFECT HUSBAND and THE THIRD VICTIM. And don’t be discouraged, I enjoyed both but THE NEXT ACCIDENT is far and away the best of the three. It’s worth your time.

It’s been a long, long time since I was so totally thrilled by a thriller.

FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy is not convinced that his daughter's death was an accident. Quincy knew his daughter had many problems, but he also knew something didn't seem right about her death. Distraught and determined to find the answers, Quincy seeks the help of ex PI, Rainie Connor. Together they hope to uncover what really happened, but could Quincy and those around him be the next targets?

Another fantastic read by Lisa Gardner. The twist and turns in this book will have you turning the pages quite quickly and will keep you guessing right to the very end. A fast paced read that will keep you up at night as you won't be able to put down. Highly recommended.

The Next Accident by Lisa Gardner
FBI Profiler series #3. Police procedural thriller.
FBI Agent Pierce Quincy is haunted by his daughter’s death from a drunk-driving accident. Pierce has asked private investigator Rainie Connor to look into his daughter’s accident. She finds the responding officer and his analysis of the accident is chilling. Could the accident have been planned and was personally aimed at Pierce? He and Rainie and his surviving daughter go through his cases trying to find any flags. And in the meantime, don’t trust anyone.

Chilling to think someone can systematically pull apart your life because you did your job. Grisly and bloody and way too close for comfort. A thrill ride you won’t soon forget.

WOW that's all I can say about The Next Accident the 3rd in the Quincy/ Rainie series by Lisa Gardner, think I like this series more than her DD Warren series the interaction between Quincy & Rainie is like no other in a series they go together like Lamb & mint sauce, the pacing was excellent not over done & was just so enjoyable I had to put The Killing Hour no 4 on my wish list straight away, if you love Police procedural you will love this series as a lot of my GR friends do too.

Pierce Quincy a supervisory special agent a FBI profiler back in the days when that division was called the investigative supportive unit& he was known as the best of the best. Six years ago after a particularly brutal case he moved to the to the behavioural science where he focused on researching future homicidal practices & teaching classes at Quantico where he met Rainie in her home a year ago , in her home town of Baskerville Oregon where a mass murder had had ravaged her community & grabbed the attention of Quincy.

Quincy had only met her an hour before walking the grim crime scene with her, Quincy had lost his daughter Amanda a month ago in a automobile accident in April she was 23 years old, had a head on into a telephone pole in Virginia causing permanent brain damage her face shattered.

Now Quincy doesn't think it was an accident & asks Rainie who is the top of her field to investigate, Quincy's other daughter Kimberley is grief stricken over her sisters condition she needs time & space to heal on her own. We find out later that Rainie's mother was abusive , the bottle was her best friend had put her fist in Rainies face narrowly missing her head.

The plot really picks up when Quincy's father Abraham who is suffering Alzheimer's is kidnapped Quincy & rainie will search heaven on earth to find him but things take a turn when Quincy is framed for the murder.

5 solid ***** for this terrific series if you have not read this series yet you are missing out on something really special NOTE - This series must be read in order.

The third Quincy & Rainey thriller, The Next Accident by Lisa Gardner picks up where the last one left off. FBI Agent Pierce Quincy’s daughter Mandy is on life support to keep her organs alive until her mother gives permission to “pull the plug.” Mandy drove her car into a pole at 35 MPH while under the influence of alcohol. Her dad does not think it was an accident. Meanwhile, Lorraine Conner has left her post as a cop on the opposite coast and is now trying to make it as a private investigator when Quincy shows up with a case for her. He wants to hire her to find his daughter’s killer.

The plot thickens, as the saying goes. It would not be a story at all if Quincy’s instincts proved false, so this is no spoiler to say that there IS a killer, and he appears to be out to get even with Quincy. Who will be next? Lisa Gardener does a superb job, as usual, ramping up the suspense as victims are surveyed, stalked, primed, and wooed. This UNSUB is a devious individual who seems to have a serious ax to grind. Some of the timeline and actions that take place are rather far-fetched and implausible, but the suspense is wonderful.

The relationship between Quincy and Rainey is like a tentative walk on a frozen pond with each afraid to move too fast or make a misstep. As long as they stick to business, they seem to be on solid footing, but once things approach the personal realm, watch out! When will the ice break? When it does – wowie!

My take on all this? The creativity and tension is great. Believability – nope. Primary characters are people I could root for; the suspects are indeed shady, if perhaps a bit too stereotyped.

Overall, I give it 3.5 stars rounded to 4 because I did really enjoy this book.

I had a hard time rating this story by Lisa Gardner. For the most part I really enjoy her stories. This was still entertaining but not very believable. I do not consider myself an expert on Alcoholics Anonymous or recovery but there were items in this story that just don't ring true. You don't need to attend an AA meeting. A simple internet search or watching the movie "My Name Is Bill W." with James Woods provides some insight into how AA works.

Readers of previous books in the series know that FBI Agent Pierce Quincy's daughter, Mandy, died as the result of an automobile accident and that she was drunk at the time although she had been in recovery for several months. He doesn't believe it was an accident and he asks Rainie to investigate. Rainie is now a private investigator after the events of The Third Victim. This was the story that brought Rainie and Pierce together ... personally and professionally. He was there when Rainie needed him. Now it is up to her to be there for him.

As Rainie investigates it appears that Pierce is targeted by a psychopath who seeks out those closest to Pierce. In the process he makes Pierce a suspect and is undermining his career. Pierce, Rainie and Pierce's surviving daughter Kimberly are in a desperate race that takes them from Quantico, New York, Philadelphia, and Oregon to try and stop this psycho. But they don't even know who they are dealing with. It would appear to be someone from Pierce's past. Someone he helped put in prison? A relative of someone he helped put in prison? Pierce has been an FBI agent for 15 years. There are hundreds of cases. How do you identify one single individual from a 15 year career of dealing with the sickest in society?

This is not a very believable story but it was certainly entertaining. A good yarn and I will be reading the next book in the series ... The Killing Hour.

This is book 3 in the FBI Profiler series and I really enjoy it. FBI profiler Quincy is a compelling character and this book will see him quite tested. His daughter has died and he is not sure that it wasn’t more than the accident it seemed to be. He hires Raine to investigate now that she has her private investigator license. It soon becomes clear that someone is stalking Agent Quincy and has every intention of taking everything from him before finally taking his life. I didn’t love the relationship between the two, but it got better as the book went on. I did like the characters and the story was well written.

When Bethie finally gave permission for life support to be turned off on their daughter Mandy, FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy found himself struggling with grief. Mandy’s accident had been eighteen months before but the hope had always been there; a slender hope but he couldn’t help but feel it. Now there was nothing – Bethie and he had been divorced for eight years and his eldest daughter Kimberly was bitter and angry; she rarely had the inclination to return her father’s calls.

Quincy went to ex-colleague and friend, Rainie Connor for help. She was a PI after losing her position on the police force under terrible circumstances. Quincy helped Rainie through those dark days; she had no intention of turning Quincy down when he said he suspected Mandy’s accident was no such thing. But when their investigation started taking them into places of extreme violence and horror, they realized more lives were at risk – including their own.

This killer was diabolical in his methods, he was clever in a twisted way, and was one step ahead of them always. How could they find him, how could they beat him at his own game? The evil surrounded them – could they fight their way out and win, or would it be too late?

This psychological thriller was brilliant! Lisa Gardner never disappoints and this was no exception! The twists were extreme and the final reveal shocked me, as I had no inkling of the killer’s identity. A great read, one I have no hesitation in recommending highly.

Although I enjoyed reading this, I didn't feel it was believable. A little too far fetched and even at the end, I found the conclusion hard to buy as well.

What. a. ride.

THE NEXT ACCIDENT opens with one of the most chilling chapters I think I've ever read. It definitely set the tone for a methodically twisted mystery rife with paranoia and betrayal and deceit and suspicion.

I never once guessed the puppet master who was pulling all the strings. And what I did guess is too spoilery to even hint at, so I will refrain. I do think that may be why I rated this a four instead of a five. I'm okay being wrong about a a mystery but I kind of felt this was just too.. improbable? Even looking back and how it was set up I still think it was too out of left field. Or maybe that's just me.

But everything else? I loved.

I loved the tense (lack of) relationship between Quincy and Rainie as the story begins, though I was very relieved to see how Rainie ended up after the second book. I loved meeting the rest of Quincy's family and was horrified at the way the killer swept through their lives, how they were slowly broken down and seeing Quincy deteriorate. All the details.. it was something else. Creepy as all get out.

This was an extremely tense murder mystery, probably one of Gardner's strongest. I'm especially loving how each book in this series is vastly different from the last (serial killer husband, school shooting, sociopathic elimination of a man's family) and can't wait to see what's next for this pair.

If I had to pick a favorite of Lisa Gardner's books, this would be my pick. The characters of Pierce Quincy (from "The Perfect Husband" and "The Third Victim") and Ranie Connor (from "The Third Victim") return to solve the death of Quincy's oldest daughter, Amanda. A car accident left her on life support, which his ex-wife has finally agreed to turn off. Quincy has a nagging feeling that Amanda's accident wasn't so accidental... so he hires Ranie to help uncover the truth. In the meantime, we meet Kimberly Quincy, a strong girl in her 20s following in her father's footsteps as she deals with the loss of her sister. There's also Bethie, Quincy's ex-wife, and a host of secondary characters. Identity theft is one of the main plot points as Quincy uncovers that someone is pretending to be him and framing him for the murder as his family becomes the next targets. A pulse-pounding thriller with strong characters... you will stay up all night reading "The Next Accident".

I am not sure how I feel about this book. The graphic violence in it was shocking and depressing and gave the whole story a dark feel, which it never quite overcame. I kept reading because I really wanted to find out what was going on, to solve the mystery. I was disappointed when the villain is finally revealed, because it didn't make sense to me. The bad guy's behaviors were so out of proportion to the offense he felt the main character had perpetrated upon him. It just seemed too implausible.
The mystery kept me reading, but it is not a book I would read again. I don't know if I would read other books by this author or not. She weaves a good tale, but it was too dark and too far out of reality for me.

This book was a somewhat enjoyable read, but the plot was so improbable I felt cheated
out of a good mystery. First of all, I can see someone seeking revenge if the actions of another
person caused them to lose custody of their children, but I don't think it would turn them into a sadistic psychopath. And if he was so bent on revenge why did he sit and cool his heels for over a year and wait for Quincy's daughter to die before he moved on to the next victim? And how did Quincy's other daughter just happen to go to the college where he had been teaching for 10 years and become his protege? And why would an FBI agent want to hire a PI to check out his suspicions? And why would one of his colleagues , who is also an FBI agent, turn into a murderers accomplice just because Quincy had
solved a case that he couldn't and supposedly showed him up? And besides,I'm tired of PIs and detectives who are recovered or recovering alcoholics. Enough already.

Someone you'd least expect is targeting your family members. He's killed three but intent on destroying you and killing more. This is what Pierce Quincy, a top-notch FBI agent, is up against and the thriller is he's being hunted and profiled. The killer is making it appear as if Quincy committed these crimes.

This book was a little slow at the beginning but quickly picked up. This psychopathic horror story would make anyone in these professions hesitant because of the mindset of the people you come into contact with. The story grips you as you read, volleys with your emotions and then you're spent at the end. The plot was well put together. It carried you into not knowing whose who, who to trust, how easy we give out information without realizing our error. I will continue in this series.

This is the third book featuring FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and Rainie Conner, now an ex-cop and recently authorised as a private investigator in her home state of Oregon. After a brief relationship at the end of the previous book, Rainie is disappointed that her email and phone contact with Quincy has become virtually non-existent. So she is totally surprised when Quincy turns up at her home - and wants to hire her as a private investigator. 14 months earlier, his elder daughter was killed in a car accident which occurred when was driving under the influence of alcohol, for which she had been attending AA meetings. Quincy now suspected that her death may not have been an accident and asks Rainie to investigate. As her investigation gets under way, Rainie soon realises that there are certain anomalies regarding the accident and that Quincy may be right in believing that his daughter may have been killed - and that the rest of his family are under threat from a vengeful and accomplished killer...
This was a real rollercoaster of a read with a twisted killer (identity unknown until the end) out for vengeance against Quincy's loved ones and Rainie, Quincy and the police always being at least one step behind. This was frustrating but in a good way and really meant that I just got totally wrapped up in the story. Great story and conclusion and looking forward to reading more by this author - 9/10.

Very good suspense/thriller book. If that's your flavor you will love this one.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I did guess who dun it...and I hate that. I like to be shocked. It is a very dark tale and gruesome in detail, so not for the faint of heart. The killer seemed to go a little overboard for the offense he felt from Quincy. I guess that's what you get with a socio/psychopath. You never know what will set them off and how far they will go.

Good read. Kept me in it until the end!

This is the third book in the fabulous Quincy & Rainie series. Quincy's daughter has died and he asks Rainie to investigate as he suspects foul play.

I love these characters, the fast pace of Gardner's books and the edge of your seat suspense that is her trademark. There were more than a few plot twists in this one that I did not see coming. I also loved getting more insight into the characters and watching the relationship between the 2 main characters further develop. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

There's something about Lisa Gardner's stories that holds my throat in a vise grip and never lets go. I love those books where the villain is revealed only in the climax and here the killer is so twisted in mind and crafty with his mind games that somehow you end up wondering every step in the game.
Brilliantly written!
