An absolutely life-changing parenting book! I picked up this book because I'm at the end of my rope with an incredibly strong-willed, aggressive, "problem"-labeled child, and I hoped it would offer a unique solution for my unique child, but I also worried that it might be fru-fru, hippy-type of parenting advice that sounds nice but doesn't actually work or help anyone. I was not disappointed at all! The gentle parenting strategies are so logical and Christ-like. I feel so much hope that I can correct the mistakes I have been making because I didn't know what else to do. Ultimately, this book changed my behavior, which I believe really will help my son in every way. I HIGHLY recommend this book for any new parent or one struggling with young children.

There is a huge controversy going around among parents and parent educators. How should children be disciplined? Some are firm believers in letting children lead while others follow the old school methods of "sparing the rod, spoiling the child". The author pulls from her personal experience as a mom of six children to write a well written book on her views of parenting. She advocates using a gentle method that involves no spanking, time-outs, or lectures. Practical advice and suggestions are sprinkled throughout her book.

I finished the entire book and am still unsure how to rate it. I completely agreed with quite a few things she talked about. But I also strongly disagreed with a couple of things too. As a mom of only two children, I'm certainly not an expert. And the author does mention getting to know your child, so that you know what works, since each child is different. But some of her methods or ideas just don't follow the parenting philosophy I've adopted as a mom. Her focus on the positive instead of the negative approach is what would sell me on the book. It inspired me to be more positive as a mom and for that reason alone I would probably recommend the book. Just remember that everyone is different and not everything will work with your children or for your family.

I received this book free of charge from Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.

Some helpful ideas for changing your parenting, especially for someone coming out of a context of controlling, anger-driven, or self-centered parenting.

But Christians will note that the Gospel is completely absent in the model presented.

In this book, the ultimate solution to most problems seems to be more connection and empathy, and allowing our children to be their true selves. The concept of parental authority is almost completely erased.

In this book, there's no sin and there's no Jesus, and I'm afraid this places a tremendous burden on ourselves as parents.

Next I want to read "Jesus, the Gentle Parent" by this author -- perhaps this will present a more biblically grounded version of the same material?

Mostly opinion rather than evidence based; nonetheless Knost's persuasive style is from the heart and the book is helpful for all and any parent opposed to authoratibe parenting styles.

Good for all ages

I only wish i would have read this book sooner. Insightful and creative approaches to dealing with conflict. I love how it encourages parents to bring our the individuality of our children instead of demanding confirmation. Well written and a very easy read.

I thought this book was helpful in some ways but also painfully dull. I would have appreciated more illustrations about how to use her skills at different ages. The two big take aways for me were-
1. Your kid is probably/maybe just engaging in age appropriate behavior when they’re driving you bonkers. Taking that into account can be helpful in deciding disciple/correction strategy. Your kid is being a kid, not a “ill behaved” hoodlum.
2. Don’t threaten to take away things to try to get a child to comply but try to connect and solicit cooperation. This is helpful with my toddler but needs some flushing out with my older kids.

I believe wholeheartedly in gentle parenting but this book is utter trash. Instead of providing the science that backs this approach and real-life examples of its use, this book contains lots of hypotheticals and fabricated emotionally manipulative stories to illustrate points with a few of the author's own personal anecdotes sprinkled throughout, and provides few concrete examples. I had hoped this book would provide more of a deep dive but it was repetitive fluff to me. I'm glad this was a short book but the time still would have been better spent reading parenting blogs on gentle parenting

Just what I needed right now: a reminder to get back to parenting the way that I want to parent. For some reason, I have really found myself slipping into punitive parenting. I have felt angry, I have threatened, I have yelled. I don't want to do any of that! This was a good primer. Short and sweet and presented in such a way that it gave me the pep talk I needed. I can do this! For me and for my kids.

a gentle intro to gentle parentin

Another wonderful gentle parenting book. My ideas about parenting completely changed when my darling daughter was born and I was adrift looking for parenting advice that followed my heart. This book showed me the way and I intend to get Knosts other books. If you want to parent in a harmonious way without controlling or manipulating your child but actually parenting and teaching them, read this book.

A must-read for every parent, especially those who are discontent with their current method of parenting. I don't like spanking my child, but I didn't know what to do instead. This book is a great start for those who are lost as to how to parent their children well when they don't know anything different than what they were raised with. I have nearly every chapter bookmarked for reference!
