“Anna likes the flowery shit.”
“Anna?”
He paused for a second, then said, “My sister.”

I am so disappointed, so massively disappointed you cannot even understand. Not only because my ship did not sail at all, but also because this was a fucking filler novel. A companion novel about how Nick gets his own happy ending, because apparently every semi-serious character always needs to have a romantic partner, otherwise their storyline just isn't well-rounded. Fuck that shit. This book felt like a cheap joke, some way to make more money out of this trilogy and I am PISSED.

It did not even have to do with the plot line of the first two books, like, at all. Sure, the villain was still the Branch and all, but it was a whole new story plucked out of thin air. Where did that suddenly come from? There were zero indications for anything pertaining to this new project the Branch was working on in the first two novels, where was the fucking build-up to this? Also, as far as I know, Nick wasn't having flashbacks about some mystery girl in Altered or Erased. The whole fucking plot of this third book came so out of left field with absolutely no warning, I am left gaping.

I thought this would be the grand finale of finally tearing the Branch down once and for all, getting rid of everyone who's left supporting it etc blah blah, but it wasn't even the same freaking cast of characters. Sure, Cas, Sam and Anna, even Trevor, make cameo appearances, especially at the end, but save for a few calls here and there it was only Nick who was familiar and suddenly there's this new girl Elizabeth who even has her own POV chapters and I'm just sitting here like What the hell is going on?

Needless to say, I did not enjoy this. Not one second of it. Most of what is happening is basic 0815 paranormal plot anyways, the setting is boring and stays the same throughout the whole novel, the new characters are uninteresting and flatter than a stick figure with just as much personality as one. Fuck that. Not even the mystery that needs to be solved is very intriguing at that, there is literally nothing that keeps the reader reading on. I was so, so tempted to drop it around 50% because there was nothing fucking going on. It was such a drastic change from the action-packed first two books of the trilogy, it just further drives my point home that this was some sort of trick to milk the cow some more.

You won't believe how freaking angry and frustrated I am. I think I'll just forget this third book existed in the first place and be content to fondly remember the first two. Seriously, a finale as shitty as this one can really stain the whole trilogy and that makes me even madder, because I seriously enjoyed the first two books a lot, and now this makes me want to renounce any attachment I ever had to this series at all and it's ridiculous. Why did Rush have to go and do this?!

PS: How the frickle frackle did Elizabeth never even question the fact that this guy looked like he almost hadn't aged at all?! She was fucking twelve or thirteen when he rescued her looking like he was sixteen and he still looks like a teenager six years later. But no, she doesn't question that at all because she's a fucking idiot. Not only that, Nick remembers her only as a frightened child, so how the fuck is it even possible for him to think about her sexually. That's so creepy what the fuck even.

PPS: Wouldn't surprise me if she's gonna do another book/novella on how Cas finds his own happy ending.

*WARNING* MULTIPLE-GIF RANT BELOW
When I first started reading this and realized that Anna and Nick were NOT going to end up together, I was all like:

Then, as I went on, I noticed something: I actually LIKED Elizabeth. So I let it go and just enjoyed the awesomeness that accompanied being inside Nick's beautiful head. When I finished the book, I was okay for about two seconds before I realized that this was the"last" one!

Not okay! What about Riley?! What about Trev, Cas, and Chloe? Don't they deserve love to?! Besides I want to know more about what happens to Nick and Elizabeth! This is so not fair!

"...Nick sets off alone in search of answers and in search of the girl who haunts his dreams."

So this means there will be a new character whose role is to be Nick's love interest and it's not going to be Anna? :( I don't know, man... Should I still bother picking it up? Having a new character appear to play a lead role at the last book of the trilogy doesn't sound much of a good idea.

------
Gahhh! I hope this alternating POV isn't a sign that Anna will die.

Also, even if the author said there'll be no love triangle, I still have my fingers crossed that Anna will end up with Nick! Man, they have history with each other, and I still can't overlook the fact that Sam dated Dani.

Oh my god, I can't wait!
But oh my god, people. What the hell is this nonsense with Anna and Nick? She's suppose to end up with Sam damn it! It's not that I don't like Nick, it's just that Anna and Sam is perfect for each other. Jennifer, if you let Nick be with Anna, I'm gonna cry! I've never liked triangles, they're so fucking awful. So Jennifer, don't you dare start now.

Please don't make Anna with Nick!! If that happens then I'm gonna kick some butt!

This book! Oh this book! To say I’m a huge cheerleader of the Altered series is basically an understatement. When I first read Altered I was blown away by it and still think it is one of the most underrated books out there. Read it people! Read it! And then I read Erased and I was 100% hooked. There was something special about these boys, Sam, Cas, Trev and Nick, and Anna. I wanted to learn more about all of them. We learned about Sam in Altered and Anna in Erased. But we also got a deeper glimpse at Nick in Erased and I knew I needed to know more. Well more I got. Reborn is Nick’s book and it was fan-freaking-tastic. But it also left me wanting more, more, more.

Reborn focuses on Nick. He has started to remember things from before his memories were altered and they are haunting him. So much so that he drinks to dull the feelings his flashbacks bring on. But no matter how much he drinks he can’t seem to forget a girl that haunts his memories that he may or may not have been sent to kill and that he may or may not have actually followed through on. Making a decision Nick takes off in search of this girl not sure what he will find but needing to know. But with the Branch still out there anything can happen and Nick ends up finding more than he expects.

What I really loved about Reborn was the change of voice. The first two books were from Anna’s point of view which I enjoyed, but I was dying to get into the heads of these boys. Jennifer Rush made a wise move in making it Nick’s head space in Reborn and an even smarter decision in bringing in Elizabeth, a new character, to counter Nick’s gruffness. Don’t get me wrong, I love Nick, he’s my favorite Jennifer Rush boy, but he’s not the happiest of dudes. Having Elizabeth’s voice helped soften him some and brought his back story to life.

Which brings me to the plot. The plot was super compelling. I was hooked almost immediately on the story and the mystery behind it. Both Nick and Elizabeth had fragmented memories of the situation that connected them so the clues they had were limited. But there were some clues that surfaced straight out and subtly that made me wonder how it was all going to play out. I did guess some of the mystery, but there was enough that that didn’t matter to me. It kept me interested and the last 3rd of the book is end of your seat addicting. I just loved it.

Reborn was pretty much everything I had hoped it would be. It was fast paced, entertaining, and everything I expect from Jennifer Rush. I fell in love with Nick even more than I was before and I was invested in his story completely. If I said it once I will say it again, this series is something everyone should need and talk about. It needs buzz and love and I need more books on these boys! Thank you Ms. Rush, thank you.

Reborn starts few months after Erased. It was from Nick and Elizabeth's POV. Finally Nick gets his own POV and I couldn't be happier but that happiness deflated soon after I started reading this.

Nick, Sam, Cas and Anna all start to have flashbacks more often and Nick starts to have flashes of a scared, injured girl whom he doesn't recognize but desperately wants to know whether he injured or worse killed her for The Branch or not. So he gets some information with Anna's help and sets off to find out on his own.

Then there's a girl Elizabeth who was saved by a guy called Gabriel and now lives with her foster mother in the same town Nick visits. They cross paths and turns out that Gabriel is Nick and Nick didn't injure or kill Elizabeth but on the contrary he saved her and got her to ER and Elizabeth is the girl from Nick's flashbacks.

They instantly fall for each other even though we are not sure of Nick's age and Elizabeth is not yet eighteen and she was saved by Nick when she was twelve years old so for them to fall for each other was wrong and creepy honestly. There was an unnecessary love triangle going on between Nick, Elizabeth and Evan which we all knew how it'd turn out to be.

The Branch is still the main enemy in this book but it lacked the thrill, fast pace and action of the previous two books. For the most part nothing happens except that Nick goes to find the girl and he finds the girl then has a run in with Evan where they are both instantly jealous of each other and Nick drinks a lot and Nick is a handsome and a playboy where no one can resist him and all that crap. I mean I love Nick but all this was just not necessary.

We do see Trev and he is trying to make amends with the group and now he is a part of another organization that is against The Branch. Things start to happen in the last 60 pages or so when Sam, Anna and Cas join Nick and they save Elizabeth. Of course, I loved them all together once more but I just didn't get enough of them and I definitely didn't get enough of Cas. I never get enough of Cas.

I really wanted to love this but I found the love connection between Nick and Elizabeth very uncomfortable what with her being only twelve when Nick first saved her. Yes, she's all grown up now but I am sorry I just can't get over that fact. I could see everything from a mile including Chloe and her agenda and Aggie and the therapist. Also, there was no plot and Riley still escapes. Ugh!

Sometimes, my reading preference is highly irregular and mostly, sporadic. A mystery/suspense book like this has to catch me on a good day; a day when I’m in need of something that elevates my heart rate without moving off the couch. This book certainly had its moments. But it wasn’t nearly as suspenseful as the first two books. Regardless, it was still a satisfactory instalment featuring Nick. He was every bit as mysterious and cranky as I remembered him to be: troublemaker, brusque and slightly unhinged.

The Girl in His Past

(Isn’t there always?) She haunts him in his dreams. A girl he was supposed to kill execution-style in the woods but one that he ended up saving. But due to the aftereffects of the experiments done on him by the branch, he wasn’t sure if he did, in fact, save her. Now, he can’t get her out of his mind. But as the story moves along, pieces become clearer. And the town where he ended up holds more secrets of his past life that he was not willing to face. In the grand scheme of things, he might not have a choice anyway.

The Boy in Her Past

There’s a lot of Elizabeth’s past she can’t remember. Most specifically of that time following her abduction. Every night, she dreams of Gabriel. How he saved her; his eyes and his smell. But she’s ready to move on. She’s found a life after a traumatizing event in her life. She’s surrounded by friends, and a new mother figure who treats her as her own. She spends her time making perfume. Smell is how she associates a person or a memory. When Gabriel shows up in her home town, the recognition and connection was instantaneous. They each hold the key to unlocking certain events in their pasts. But what else would they uncover as they try to piece together their broken lives?

Spoilers Ahead

I feel like this book was an extended novella. The major plot didn’t really move other than yet again, they were unable to bring down the Branch. I don’t know how many more books are coming, but if you’re expecting to see the end of Riley, you’ll be sorely disappointed. He is like Jason Vorhees or Mike Myers. You just can’t kill him.

I can’t believe how many fans of this series expected the SS Anna/Nick ship to set sail into the yonder. I mean, really?! Why? I can’t see Anna with anyone else other than Sam. I did want Nick to have his HEA, but really, HEAs are impossible until they get rid of Riley. He deserves his romance, sure. Though Elizabeth, was a bit of a Mary Sue at first, she actually grew on me in the end. I think her quiet disposition matches perfectly well with Nick’s intensity.

We learned a bit more of exactly what kind of experiments they were doing to the kids. Some sort of genetic enhancement program that turns them into the perfect soldiers: fearless, skilled and who are basically super humans. Here, we find out that there are kids who can regenerate cells; they heal fast and are difficult to kill (hence, the title). I think this is the part where it felt like an addendum to the plot in the interest of extending the series. The addition didn’t feel awkward per se, but it does feel like an afterthought considering the arch wasn’t introduced in the first two books.

Three for Three

So far, this series is one of those rare ones that I consistently enjoy. It’s the perfect mix of suspense, romance and action for someone like me who can only stomach a bit of everything in one book. It is unfortunate that this series is not getting much love, but if you’re a fan of stories featuring genetically-altered teens made to be super soldiers, this series is worth a look-see, at least.

I was so worried that Erased was the final book. It was so short!!! There was no cliff hanger!
I am so happy to hear that there's a 3rd book because I need more Sam, Nick, Cas and Anna in my life. They're like some of the best characters ever.

Update: Jan 25, 2015: I read the book.

Reborn is the finale to the Altered Saga, with the exception of an upcoming e-novella. Instead of Anna’s perspective, we get Nick’s and a girl named Elizabeth. It’s definitely different and unexpected. The previous book Erased ended in a way that made me wonder if it was the final book, but maybe it’s because Anna’s story is complete. The author decided it was time to give another character a chance in the spotlight. Nick is very broody and had a rough life. His memories from his life before the Branch are returning. He’s also remembered something horrible he may have done: holding a young girl at gunpoint.

Nick goes to the small town of Trademarr, Illinois (not a real town, I looked it up.) to find this girl and make she’s alive. When they come face to face, Elizabeth sees that Nick looks pretty much the same as he did six years ago. Nick had actually saved her those years ago. As they get to know each other, Nick finds out that there was a lab near this town and wonders what the Branch may have done to Elizabeth back then. What’s the truth?

With mystery and shock factor, Reborn is an awesome finale. There’s action and romance. There’s some cool science fiction elements. There are characters from the previous book as well as new ones. I enjoyed everything once I got into it. I just missed Anna and Sam, but I really liked Nick even when he acted a bit mean. The romance between him and Elizabeth was more gentle. Nick also went to the bar a lot in the book, but he’s over 21, so it’s okay. This is not a book for younger teens. The book is more New-Adultish, minus the sex.

Also, I liked the setting, which is Illinois, where I live. Not Michigan like the previous books. I love Michigan, though. Trademarr sounds like is has to be in Chicagoland, but they mention it being by a lake, but not Lake Michigan. Maybe McHenry or Lake county or even Kankakee. Not many cliffs in Illinois except by the Mississippi or Illinois rivers. Lot of corn fields here though. The author has that right at least.

I recommend this series to fans of: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, Maximum Ride by James Patterson, False Memory by Dan Krokos, Unremembered by Jessica Brody, Revived by Cat Patrick. Pretty much, if you love books with genetically altered/engineered characters that are on the run from secret government organizations, then you should definitely read this. It’s still refreshingly unique.

Cover Art Review: Similar to previous cover. Maybe the blue is for Nick’s icy blue eyes.

Personally, I'm rooting for Nick, but I feel that despite the connection and feelings Anna and Nick shared in the past, so far, we've only ever seen Anna love Sam. Not once has she expressed any romantic feelings for Nick in the present day. I agree, she does love him, but I feel now it's more familial love than anything else. If they do end up together, it would feel forced and contrived, unless something BIG happens.
However, based on the synopsis for Nick's POV, it seems that he might fall for someone else and Anna may end up with Sam after all. That is, if this synopsis is the official one.

Okay - in general I'm a really nice reader.
If I didn't enjoy a book I usually don't feel the need to share my opinion with everyone ...
I rate the book and move on, starting the next book. I don't like to ramble about how much I hated some of the characters, the storyline or the writing style. It's just not what I do.

Today's the day everything changes 'cause this book was so terrifically bad, that I want to say a few things.
Also: please excuse my language but this just makes me super angry.

So let's start off with the question I asked myself the whole time, I read this:
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WENT WRONG? IS THIS SOME SORT OF JOKE???

Normally it's a good thing when people say they didn't expect any of what was happening in the third book of a trilogy - this time it really isn't. Where did this crappy plot suddenly come from? And who the hell was this weird Elizabeth chick? Did I somehow miss her in the first two books?

Do you know this feeling, when you watch one of these horrible book-to-movie adaptations and you find yourself asking "Have I somehow read the wrong book? What is happening?" - that's exactly what you feel like, reading Reborn. There was almost no connection to the first two installments of the series.

I'm just so fucking disappointed. I really loved Altered and Erased and I've been dying to read the last book for over a year. This book wasn't supposed to ruin the whole series for me.

ALSO: I'm either a complete idiot for getting the totally wrong vibe about Anna and Nick in Erased, OR Mrs. Rush just somehow forgot that they were supposed to get some sort of action. Something needed to happen. Anything.
But all they did was freaking talking on the phone. This just wasn't what I had in mind AT ALL. I feel so stupid about this.

God - I practically forced some of my friends to read these books. Now they'll hate me for making them suffer through this sorry excuse for a conclusion to a supposedly 'brilliant' trilogy - cause that's what I told them the Altered Trilogy would be. This'll be more than just embarrissing.

By the way - I really loved Nick in the first two books. He's the typical YA cliché of a troubled guy, drinking to much, having trust issues, being a bit violent but deep down he's super emotional and bla bla - You get what I mean?
BUT WHY THE HELL, did he have to be drunk, drinking, thinking about being drunk, wishing he was drunk, figuring out if he was already drunk enough ... for the first few chapters of this book? This was just ridiculous. I get it: he's trying to drown his pain and self pity and whatever he feels for Anna with alcohol, BUT THIS WAS JUST TOO MUCH! There's a really fine line between 'Aww, the poor guy' and 'Get your shit together, idiot' and it has been crossed. Definitely.

So if any of you enjoyed this: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I understand that people will have completely different opinions about this but ... no.

It's safe to say that the best thing about this book -for me at least- has been the shirtless dude on the cover.

Reborn will probably be one of the year's biggest disappointments for me. Not only have I enjoyed the first two books in the series, about genetically altered teenage boys, but knowing this focused on one character in particular made my expectations skyrocket. Nick - quiet, brooding, lethal Nick - has always stood out to me; there was just something about him that made me want to know more. Most of his past had yet to be explored, and I desperately wanted to know why he was so angry, what made him tick, and who would be there to heal him. We get that resolution in Reborn, but I can't say that I'm satisfied with the path it took to get there.

What I liked:
*Being in Nick's head, finally. Getting the answers. Seeing him overcome his anger and aggression and finding peace. Though I was frustrated with his character for a lot of the book, I still cared about him.
*Dual point-of-view, which I'm almost always a fan of. The voices of Nick and Elizabeth are distinct, though I preferred Nick's chapters.
*It's a quick read. Just like the first two books, Reborn is fast-paced and well-plotted, especially in the second half. We learn new history about the Branch, as well as its current goals now that it's been for the most part dismantled. There were a couple of twists I didn't see coming.
*Seeing the gang together is a highlight, especially now that Trev is back in the picture. They have great banter and their bond runs deep.
*The ending definitely leaves room for more, and even though I'm disappointed in this one, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the next. I think Trev and Cas deserve their own books!

What I didn't like:
*Okay, I really, really, really disliked the first half. I did not sign up to see Nick suck face with every girl he meets. >.< For being such a quick book, I can't believe how much time is spent in the first half with the main characters kissing other people.
*The character development was shallow; it seemed like more telling and less showing. Which, this being Nick's book, really sucks. Plus it was difficult to understand what it was about Elizabeth that made Nick want saving. She's such a one-dimensional character and didn't seem to have any personality.
*The romance has an intriguing set up, but unfortunately the shared memory between Nick and Elizabeth it relies so heavily on is one that I didn't find all that compelling. If only it had been more about the pull between the two of them and had less time devoted to random make out sessions with other characters. Maybe then I would have actually felt the supposed connection between them. This series has never been about the romance as much as the action, yet I can't help but wish Nick and Elizabeth's had been stronger. It is, after all, the main source of his growth. Normally I'm a sucker for a girl-saves-boy story line, but this one lacked heart.

Writing this review, three stars is starting to feel generous. The first half is such a waste of pages, and though the ending is enjoyable with a sprinkle of swoons, it couldn't make up for what was already missing. I was expecting much more out of Nick's book, so this is a major bummer.

I honestly don't know what to say. I've been looking for an action/thriller series for a while now and this is it. This is the series. I still have to read the novellas (Betrayed, Forged and Played, I believe) but... wow. That was one hell of a ride.

This book was about Nick. As much as I want a whole frigging 300 book series on Cas (he's so cute, isn't he? 8'D), I do have to admit that this book was so freaking amazing with his point of view. It was amazingly structured and I loved the relationship between Nick and Lissy.

The plot was, as always, action-packed and rimming to the top with mystery until BOOM answers and BOOM plot twists. Amazing series, amazing writing; can't wait for Jennifer Rush's new fantasy series!

Yay a tiny synopsis!!! And it's in two point I've views!! I hope the Nick is the other one. I really like Sam with Anna but Nick and Anna have liked each other since they were young and I just really love Nick!!!! I hope Anna ends up with Nick! Can't wait for this book!

2.5/5.

I love this book and I love Jennifer Rush! This one is told in two POV's: Nick and Elizabeth. Nick goes searching for this girl who he keeps having flashbacks about and there ends up being so much action toward the end of the book in particular. I didn't know who to trust, who was good and who was bad. I doubted Chloe, Sarah, Trev, and others. I won't tell you why or what the end result was.

We learn a lot about Nick and Elizabeth's childhood. Neither had a good childhood. From Nick's father beating him from a young age to Elizabeth being tossed from foster home to foster home.

Recommendation: I loved it and I hope (and believe) if you read it you'll like it, too. If you liked books 1 and 2, this one is almost guaranteed to capture your interest.

So...to be honest, this book wasn't bad, but I was so completely and totally disappointed I don't even know what to say. I am trying to be fair in my rating, the author has every right to write the story she wants, but...it wasn't the story I wanted. At all. And Nick...I had moments of true disgust. Not that he had to be perfect, hell I think that's why I liked him the moment I met him, he was rude and surly and suspicious, totally my kind of guy. I was not happy with the direction this story took. Again, not awful or anything, but...disappointing.
There were some bright spots for me but overall, I was just not pleased.
I don't know...

O kadar gereksiz bir kitaptı ki... Üç puanı sırf serinin hatırına veriyorum.
