Brothers & Lovers

Rate this book
The story starts in the Apartheid torn country of South Africa in the 1950's. The ill fated love affair, that crosses white sectarian lines, involves Crystal an Afrikaans girl and Raymond, a young Jewish boy. The blossoming relationship is violently opposed too by the bullying father of Crystal, and the orthodox Jewish parents of Raymond.

The story moves from the racism of South Africa and to the swinging and more tolerant and liberal 1960's London. Bitter fraternal strife follows the ill fated love affair of Raymond, in the form of his brother, Larry, and his wife. The two men are torn apart by their differences.

The love between Crystal and Raymond continues to resurface, and it interrupts the marriage of Raymond, and many years later the brothers are faced with reconciliation or continuing hatred, even to the grave, in a searing and unpredictable climax upon the ski slopes of Europe.

One of the best books I have read in a very long time. I could relate to the story and also loved the familiarity having visited Cape Town myself. Wonderful bittersweet story. Feel a bit empty now it's finished

Disappointed with the ending. Did the writer run out of ideas?
