Nearly six years into the war, Mrs. Eleanor Wood, the widowed mistress of Greystone Manor, anxiously awaits the return of her son William from a Japanese POW camp. A recent letter from him to his steadfast fiancée has given rise to new hope that he has indeed survived the war. As the conflict in the Pacific draws to its frighful close, Eleanor finds that instead of the quiet reprieve she was anticipating, her home is needed more than ever to alleviate the widespread housing shortage. Concerned by the difficulties still facing the war-torn people of her country, she observes those around her bravely embracing the future, and wishes she was young enough to pursue the desires of her own heart. Drawing strength from her family, and most especially from Gilda Gardner, her young protégé, Eleanor watches, wishes, and waits.
I was sorry to finish this third book of the series I had become very involved with the characters and their daily lives, I felt I was part of the book. I hope the author adds more books to this series.A must read.
I have read many books about England during and post WW2 but none with the feeling of actually knowing the people like this trilogy did. The feelings of the descriptions of the landscapes, of London after the bombings, the different people loss then found. You owe it to yourself to read them. But have some time because you are going to go from one to another until you finish.
Wonderful continued story line and characters! Developed beautifully and flawless. Wonderful writer! This is book 3 in a series of 4. I'm quite sure I will start over again after I read book four! Miss Kennon is a very talented writer. I hope to find more of her work. Also, as usual, very clean writing!! Impressive!! Yay!!😄
