4 stars. overall I liked this but the first half felt a bit slow and so I put it away for a long time before coming back to it. the second half flew by (after he proposed a MOC) and was enjoyable.
Charity (23) is a plain Jane English nurse who moved to work in an Amsterdam hospital because she believed herself in love with a young Dutch doctor, Cor, not realising the guy was a malicious playboy who was leading her on for his own amusement. now she is stuck in Holland and the hospital grapevine (even the senior docs) all know and feel sorry for her.
tbh this setup put me off quite a lot as I found it excruciating for the poor girl to be humiliated this way, and it also made her seem very silly and stupid because this topic was introduced by a senior Consultant telling surgeon and professor Tyco (40), the H, about the situation, and from that perspective it makes her look like a stupid silly pathetic plain girl. ouch. if it had been told from her POV it would have seemed entirely understandable. so anyway, it put me off for a bit and this backstory slowed down the tale and made me stop reading for a bit.
Charity has been in Holland 2 months and Cor has only bothered to take her out 3 times and she longs for him. then he stands her up on a date and never turns up. when she confronts him, he laughs it off and scornfully says that she is a fool who probably expected him to marry to marry her. this is true. she musters up her pride and tells him to get lost, but she is bewildered and heartbroken.
Tyco sees that she looks upset and takes her out to eat and offers a brotherly ear, saying he has a young sister in Scotland and he would hate for his sis to be alone abroad with no-one to confide in. Charity ends up telling him about Cor. he comforts her gently.
but Charity now finds work unbearable because she realises everyone knows what happened, and Cor also makes sure to rub it in every time he sees her in the hospital by making a show of malicious flirtation with her. this gets worse when she is transfered to work in the same ward as Cor. Realising this, Tyco gets her transfered to the burns unit instead, his own department, so that Cor can't torment her at work. Charity doesn't see much of Tyco there as their schedules are different, but she is happier.
then one day she is out on a walk and notices a house fire and rushes in to rescue some children and is a bit burned herself. tyco takes care of her. he also invites her to tea at his house and she meets his 2 young daughter and they all get along. she ends up confiding in him that she doesn't really have family, just a stepmother and a gorgeous model stepsister who rarely bother to stay in touch. he is kind and friendly day with her and she has a wonderful time.
a bit later tyco invites her for a day out and in evening she ends up having dinner with him and his daughters, another wonderful day. as she is leaving, tyco is taking to the girls governess who has to leave to nurse her old mom, and tyco tells the governess that he is planning to marry soon. hearing this, Charity feels a bit sad and doesn't know why.
SPOILERS AHEAD
the governess then invites Charity to tea and they chat. the governess then suggests to the prof that the girls like Charity and she might help soften the blow after the governess leaves them. he agrees and says she is welcome to invite charity to see the girls at any time.
meanwhile, Cor is peeved because charity was seen at lunch with the prof and he cruelly taunts her about being a sly female out to catch the prof. the prof overhears this and makes Cor apologise to charity and with cold quiet rage he warns Cor off, threatening him should he target her again. oh wow. direct for a betty hero, and especially for the seemingly placid prof. yay for still waters...! Cor scarpers. Prof invites Charity to go over to see his girls and she agrees.
the day she goes, happily playing with the delighted girls into the evening, he comes home briefly but is going to dinner and dancing with a widow that night. but he drives charity home first and he can tell she is thinking about his date and tells her not to overthink things or she will make a mountain out of a molehill.
despite this, the two of them find themselves thinking of each other more and more.
tis now the Xmas season. things are better. Cor leaves her alone at work, turning tale and running when he sees her. most satisfying. and she continues to spend time with the prof and his girls, including Xmas shopping. at the end of of one these days, he kisses her cheek, taking her by surprise. the next day, at work, he calls her onto the office and says he's been thinking of taking a wife. someone who his girls like, and someone who understands how important his work is to him. he asks her to marry him. she is utterly shocked. this is a at 46%.
he gives her time to think about it, never broaching the topic at work, inviting her to visit his girls as normal, before he finally asks her again in his home and gently talks her into it, telling her he thinks they could be happy together and that he would never be fickle like Cor. she agrees on the basis that he understands that's she isn't in love with him. at this point the story gets faster paced and more enjoyable for me.
they have a quiet wedding. she settles into married life and she enjoys being with the girls and all the shopping and meeting his family etc. he is quite busy with work, but is friendly, but she sometimes wonders about if he loved another woman or if he still sees the widow he had dated, but tells herself it is not her business.
he is always considerate of her and reassures her that if she ever gets worried or falls for someone else, she must tell him and he will understand because he is so much older than her.
at 70% her model stepsister Eunace comes to Amsterdam for a modelling job and Tyco encourages charity to invite her to stay. Eunace takes one look at the handsome Tyco and the gorgeous big house and is instantly envious. she keeps snarking at Charity for being sly and saying she can't imagine how charity caught tyco. she makes tyco drive her back to her hotel. the next day tyco comments to Charity about how pretty and lively Eunace is.
Eunace continues to visit and conspires and cajoles to try to get tyco to take her out. she blatantly tells Charity that she plans to steal Tyco away and that tyco must have married charity to mother his kids because he cant really like her. she comes to stay at their house and dresses skimpily and throws herself at Tyco. charity takes it all like a doormat, pretending not to care, because she has suddenly realised she has fallen in live with tyco and she must never let him guess.
Eunace makes it clear she plans to stay for a long time. charity can't bear it. she lies and says that she can only stay the agreed 2 days because tycos family is coming to stay. she is mortified when tyco learns of the lie, but he backs her up and so do the staff and the kids, which is so sweet. tyco avoids all of eunace's designs on him. but then, on her last day, when they are due to go dinner and dancing with Eunace, charity decides to stay home because one of the girls is sick and has begged her to stay. she makes out like she is okay with tyco taking eunace out. she watches anxiously as those two dress up and leave the house together.
she can't sleep. it's 1am when they finally come home. she overhears Eunace saying to tyco what a fab night they had and such fun and saying let me say goodnight to you "properly". seething, charity closes her bedroom door. she doesn't know eunace knew she was listening and played it up.
the next morning eunaces spite reaches an all time high. she tells charity that tyco has planned to visit London to see her, that she plans to seduce him, that he will stay with eunace because she knows how to keep a man happy and that Charity can stay in Holland and look after the kids. furious, charity throws her out. eunace spitefully says she expects tyco will beat the airport to see her off with roses.
when tyco comes home, a furious charity yells at him and accuses him of being attracted to Eunace. she won't listen when he tries to explain. he gets angry that she doesn't trust him when he had finally hoped... he cuts himself off. they are icy with each other for a while after that. and eunace phones to pour more spite into a charity's ears and charity feels even worse. she amd tyco sre not on talking terms. she feels insecure. she thinks he regrets the marriage. she wonders if she should leave him but what about the girls?
then one day, she is visiting the directrice at the hospital and Cor waylaid her to say snide things about her marriage to the prof. she ignores him and walks off. but the prof saw them together and is furious and confronts her. she rages at him that she would never agree to meet cor. and rages at him about Eunace again. Tyco laughs at himself, suddenly relieved. he takes her home and tells her he darn well loves her and has done from the start. that he only used the widow and Eunace as opportunities to make her jel and notice him as a man. she confesses her love too. kisses. hea. There were actually clear signs from the start that Tyco had been liking Chatity from the start too so it was all believable.
CONCLUSION
Overall it was a story with lots going in and enough depth by the end to feel emotionally satisfying. I think I would enjoy a reread now I know how it will play out. I think you have to be patient with this one and trust it will pan out satisfactorily. it's a bit slow but we get all the cozy nice family times, we get to see the nasty OM get his dues, we get some nasty jealous stepsister wannabe-OW drama but have the satisfaction of seeing the H put her in her place and stick up for the h for the most part. we get a small dose of angst towards the end. we get a sweet hea with the lovely family all coming together and deservedly so. we get the sense that this h and H have been lonely for a long time and they really do fit together and complete each others happiness. slow to start but eventually satisfying. so it deserves 4 stars.
