A disappointing collection. This megapack has four novels, twenty-five short stories, and a poem. London's Sea Wolf is a classic, but why include it in a megapack that was designed to bring to light lesser known works? And why choose three novels by Norman Duncan. Duncan's work all takes place on the coast of Labrador. The first novel is all about people trapped on ice floes, icebergs, ice fields, and ice pans. The second is about hunting seals--on ice of course. The third one barely leaves the coastal village until the end. Their drama is bad, the atmosphere monotonous, and the characters shallow and uninteresting. The three of them each aims to be a sort of Canadian bildungsroman. But here's the thing: in a megapack about sea stories, I expect the Spanish Main, the South Seas, the Caribbean, the South China Sea--the tropics, exotic places, different peoples and civilizations. Not a bunch of impoverished Canadians living on the ice.

A few of the short stories have merit, but the balance of them are also disappointing. Perhaps the two Arthur Conan Doyle stories towards the end stand out. The semi-science fiction and fantasy pieces are juvenile. And again why include The Rime of the Ancient Mariner? It's a classic. I probably have it in four or five books already. Why not use its space for something unexplored and unappreciated. Just not something else by Norman Duncan.

A good mix of sea stories. Some of them are authentic gems
