In this entry, Tenchi and company are pursuing whomever stole the sacred trees from Jurai. There's yet another princess, a monk, and various machinations.

Entertaining, but I wish I read the whole thing in order.

And with volume 4, we're back to long story arcs! I'll always be happy for the stories where we see more of Minagi, and this is definitely one of my favorite arcs from this first half of the Okuda manga. The gang encounters a friend/cousin of Ayeka's and Sasami's, Asahi, and embark on a quest to help her save her father (albeit, they've been watching videos of an old samurai drama series and make half-hearted attempts throughout the volume to re-enact aspects of the drama series.)

A few of my favorite things happen in this volume, such as

Additionally, this particular story arc has some more serious and intense themes, but those are just build-up here to the next volume. Regardless, I had a lot of fun revisiting this one and I'm still going strong revisiting Tenchi.

WARNING! A POTENTIAL SPOILER APPROACHES!

After a few single-issue stories from the end of Volume Three, It's great to see a new multi-chapter starting. It is a very good idea that you read the first three volumes of No Need for Tenchi to understand the background, mainly as to who Minagi is and why she is a clone of Ryoko, of the story. However, other than that, you don't really need heavy knowledge of the Tenchi Multiverse to understand this story.

Basically, the story starts off with a character who is Manga-Exclusive, Asahi Takebe, running away from the planet of Ryuten, where the Jurai Empire gets its best wood-carvers to make its warships, to crash-land on Earth following an amusing encounter with Minagi. She reveals that her father was made the Master Woodcarver of Ryuten, but his jealous rival took control and falsified information that her father is a traitor. The rival has enlisted the help of three mysterious cyber-ninjas to track down Asahi and capture her to use as leverage against her father, who is in possession of a 'sacred technique'. Naturally, Tenchi and Company decide to selflessly help her and craziness and hilarious martial arts adventures ensue in outer space. The story is not resolved by the end of the book, and if I'm correct, it takes two more volumes to resolve fully, so get ready for a long read with this storyline with lots of comedy and semi-quasi-seriousness.

I found the story pretty easy to follow, as usual. Okuda knows how to steadily reveal information while holding back information, keeping you on your toes, yet at the same time, he satisfies you with fun comedic adventures. It's quite a fun read, though the sequence with the perverted Lord Ohsa was more than a little weird and twisted. I mean, seriously, who engages in BDSM fun when there is a technically-eight-year-old child present?!

In space a girl thinks her ship is under attack by Ryoko but it's Minagi. On Earth, the group is watching a TV show. Ryo-oh-ki gets upset about something and goes outside. More ships crashing. Near Jurai, there's someone evil plotting against someone.

The girl is Asahi and she's the target of the evil guy. She's also the one who mistook Minagi for Ryoko. She explains how her father was imprisoned (it has to do with trees becoming spaceships.) The group decides to help her out. They are also assigning people roles from their favorite television show.

One of the evil assistants lands at the shrine. He starts fighting Yosho. The guy loses and then leaves.

Mihoshi causes another disaster and most of the group has to change spaceships. They are captured by an evil ruler who is tied to the evil guy from earlier and some of them are put to work in a mine. The women other than Ryoko are put to work, sort of, as slaves to the evil ruler but they are way smarter than he is.

There's a battle scene later and the evil guy loses. One of the evil assistants attacks Tenchi and the others after they are back on board their ship, but the monk that joined them from the mine defeats the guy.

Well damn....

I have the first four volumes of this series and thought the library had the rest so I was going to finally read it all... then I found out the library doesn't have any of these books. So I figured it'd be okay because usually the chapters are random stories, but of course this volume ended with the storyline continuing in the next volume... of course... so now I have to decide if I want to try to slowly buy the rest of the books or just come back to read the whole series later in the future.

I liked this volume because it had one storyline from the start of the volume to the end. It was a fun storyline too, and I'm looking forward to finding out how this story is going to end.

It's cute, and I like the overall arc - especially the ways in which it uses the larger universe. But it's kind of slow, and dwells on the cliches.
