Stuff I Read – Cat Paradise Vol 4
Well kudos for this series for looking like it might be done in something like five or six volumes. For most manga series that is amazingly short, especially series that are centered around combat. And this volume opens right into the fray, with the fallout from last volume getting a small amount of time, and we see the main characters have some nice moments in the early pages of the volume. It is especially interesting when their back story is fully resolved, as we find out that it was the main character that basically caused the accident that led the cat to wanting to protect her. It is a very interesting twist and not really one that I saw coming, though I might just be easy to fool. But it is nice and grounds the series a bit before getting back into the large battles. It also keeps the humor alive, which is nice as some fighting manga and anime have the tendency to take themselves a bit too seriously. So it is fun to see this series do something a little new in a genre where that rarely happens.
Of course, as the action picks back up we see the series settle back into the same troupes and clichés. The leader of the group ends up staying behind to allow the other characters a chance to stop the big bad guys. The humans of the area are put in danger, and it is a little nice to see the scale amped up so quickly. This doesn’t seem like a manga where each battle is going to introduce new powers, so we already have some all out fighting, which is nice. And the battles in this volume are the most impressive to date, with some interesting uses of powers and good use of the spirit beasts and such. It is definitely reaching the endgame, and as it is shaping up it will be the president of the student council against the fox spirit beast while the rest of the pairs take on the cat, dragon, and…I’m not sure who the last one is. I guess that will be a mystery for the next volume.
We also get filled in on exactly what happened during the ancient war between the spirit beasts and the humans. It makes for an interesting story, as we see that it is the humans that initiate the betrayal that leads to the spirit beasts being locked away and all this happening. And so the spirit beasts in that sense are victims. We are also shown that the cat spirit beast basically planned for that betrayal in order to take out the humans, and only didn’t succeed because of a magic dagger. We get to see some of the magic princess that created this situation, and stole some of the cat spirit beast’s power. So really there are no innocent sides, and the only people really looking to make peace during the original conflict were the princess and the dog/wolf spirit beast. That is the other main battle of the book, that of the group against the dog spirit beast that has taken possession of one of the members of their group.
A rather weak but inevitable love/childhood friend thing is developed here, which is par for the course for manga and fighting manga in particular. It is not horribly done, but it doesn’t feel all that necessary and coming in new in the fourth volume when the series seems already to be headed toward a conclusion, I didn’t feel that it was all that well done. I mean, I am thankful that it’s not going to be drawn out over fifty volumes or something like that, but I would have preferred perhaps if it hadn’t been included at all. But the fight between the group and the dog spirit beast is nice, if brief. And it fleshes out that character more, which was necessary as he was rather lacking a personality. We really have only left to learn about the girl with the black cat now, and I figure next volume will probably deal more with her and the president, as this one dealt more with the vice president and the athletic guy. But we will see, I guess. All in all it was another good volume, and I continue to really enjoy the series as a whole, especially seeing as how it might end relatively soon. So I look forward to the next volume, and give this one a 7.75/10.
