Jennie Lucas had a tragic beginning for any would-be writer: a very happy childhood. Her parents owned a bookstore, and she grew up surrounded by books, dreaming about faraway lands. Her mother read aloud to her in French when she was little; when she was ten, her father secretly paid her a dollar for every classic novel (Jane Eyre, War and Peace) that she read. As a chubby teenager, Jennie covered her bedroom with travel posters and always had her nose in a book.
At fifteen, she went to a Connecticut boarding school on scholarship. She took her first solo trip to Europe at sixteen, then put off college and traveled around the U.S., supporting herself with jobs as diverse as gas station cashier and newspaper advertising assistant.
At 22, she met the man who would be her husband. For the first time in her life, she wanted to stay in one place, as long as she could be with him. After their marriage, she graduated from Kent State University with a degree in English, and started writing books a year later.
Jennie was a finalist in the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart contest in 2003 and won the award in 2005. A fellow 2003 finalist, Australian author Trish Morey, read Jennie’s writing and told her that she should write for Harlequin Presents. It seemed like too big a dream, but Jennie took a deep breath and went for it. A year later, after seven years of writing and eight finished manuscripts, Jennie got the magical call from London that turned her into a published author.
Since then, life has been hectic, juggling a writing career, a sexy husband and two young children, but Jennie loves her crazy, chaotic life. Who needs a clean house? Every day, Jennie gets swept into drama, glamour and passion. Now if she can only figure out how to pack up her family and live in all the places she’s writing about!
So if you found out your brother who is the legal guardian of your younger sister had stolen her inheritance and left her home alone and hungry do you:
A. Contact the authorities and turn his ass in for theft and child abuse.
B. Agree to some hairbrained scheme to marry some old rich Sheikh who may have killed his ex-wife with the promise that afterwards he would allow the sister to live with her.
In non-bizzaro world, hopefully the answer is A. But in crazy Harlequin Presents Romanclandia, we go with option B of course.
So to add to the WTFery, the heroine is kidnapped by our revenge-driven Spanish hero who is going to use her to get revenge against her brother. He takes her to his home in Madrid where he is overcome with the lust for her sexy bod but he knows she is a slut because he saw her pictured in the tabloids with men (we all know how reliable tabloids are - they were even her reasoning for why the courts wouldn't give her custody since I am sure judges read Star magazine a lot).
So the first night she is at his house, she is desperate to escape to "save" her sister. Somehow she and the hero get down to some sexing. He finds out she is a VIRGIN so OMG she is like totally innocent of everything! Because having a hymen keeps you from ever lying, stealing or doing wrong. Oh Dios Mio does he feel bad (the Dios Mio is added for your pleasure since I had to read it multiple times).
Then she tries to escape to meet her abusive nasty Sheiky prospective husband but the hero catches her and she goes back to his hacienda. The next day she starts to worry about the most important thing in this situation - she might fall in love! I know if I had been kidnapped after almost being forced to marry some nasty old dude and my sister was god-knows-where I would totally be worried about falling in love with the sexy ass Spanish guy I gave my treasured V-card to the day we met when he kidnapped me. Totally makes sense here in bizzaro world.
Then next we have the hero propose a good ol' HP standby - a marriage of convenience. They will act in love, the paparazzi will take pictures then they will marry and get custody of the young sister! Because again - the courts really read the gossip rags so they will know the couple is in love.
The story merrily chugs along toward the marriage of convenience but comes to an abrupt halt when the heroine dared to say the big bad "I love you" the three most important words in HP Romancelandia. Then the hero pushes her away for her own good of course because he is not a good person.
Then we get to another hilarious part when we finally learn what the revenge was about - her brother stole something from his father years ago. No not money or a wife or something - the formula for an anti aging creme!!! Seriously?
Of course there is the requisite happy ending where the hero learns the error of his revenge-seeking ways and goes to the heroine. I was bothered with the fact her brother got away with stealing the young sister's money and child neglect, almost forcing the heroine to marry someone, slapping the heroine and stealing the formula - then the heroine says she forgives him so it's okay since he won't head the company anymore. No, the guy should have been in jail. Also the young sister is merely a plot device since we never even meet her.
Sooo, as you can tell this book did not work for me. The writing was stilted, it's full of short sentences that come off as amateur writing. The plot is full of WTFery which I can handle in a good HP but this one was not written well enough for me to buy into the craziness.
This story was just . . . too complicated and silly. I sketched out the main plot lines, but even writing them down, I can’t make sense of these motivations.
The first deal: Heroine’s sister is being neglected. Evil sister-in-law and brother will let the heroine have custody if she marries wife-beating Arab In turn, wife-beating Arab will sell them oil for their cosmetics company.
Enter hero who wants revenge against heroine’s family and wife-beating Arab. Both of them stole a formula his father invented when he was 12. Hero was angry at the time and was going to get vengeance on the wife-beating Arab, but his entire family died in a car accident while out looking for him.
The revenge: Hero has almost bankrupted the heroine’s family’s cosmetic business. Hero will humiliate wife-beating Arab by kidnapping his new bride
The second deal: After sex and the knowing the heroine is no longer a virgin, hero agrees to marry her so she can have custody of her sister. His revenge against her brother and the wife-beating Arab will continue. Heroine can’t marry a man who is still consumed with revenge
The third deal:
Notice how there is hardly any mention of romance? That’s because there is very little romance. The H/h fall into bed. Have a week of pretending to be engaged and then they break up. They mostly talk about revenge or escape or past history.
Classic HQ Presents: an outrageous title, a hero bent on seeking revenge, a virgin heroine, and a predictable plot. Just give your brain some rest, relax and have fun. :)
Here's my favorite passage:
"I admire strong legs on a man. Big hands. Big feet." She gave them a conspicuous glance. "So good for heavy lifting."
"I don’t just have strength, but stamina," he observed, looking at her over his glass with an amused expression. "I can lift anything you want. All night."
Oh, my God.
Oh yeah, you can say that again. Oh, my God! LOL, how could I have not enjoyed this read?
Tamsin is a 23 yr old gorgeous martyr virgin who is willing to sacrifice her all-that-and-a-bag-of-chips self to an eeeevil Moroccan rich dude to Save the Children, y'all. Or one child, at least (her sister, Nicole). Unfortunately, some stranger named Marcos kidnaps Tamsin on the day of her wedding to get revenge on both her family AND her fiancee. When Tamsin gifts Marcos with her hymen for One Night of Lurve, he is all apologetic and remorseful because, of course in Romance-speak, Virginity = All Things Innocent and True in this world.
So, we have Captor/Captive. We have Revenge by using the innocent female as collatoral damage. We have the Glorification of Virginity. And this was just in the first 100 pages.
If you love these old creaky classic tropes, this one is for you!
In this book, Marcos is out to destroy the people he feels are responsible for his family's death. Kidnapping Tasmin Winter is the beginning of his plan. Tamsin is marrying a sheikh in order to protect her baby sister.
Yes, Marcos did take her virginity and then realized that he was wrong about her, which is common in HP's, but I liked the way the rest of the story went after that scene.
Tamsin does try to escape after their night together but is caught again by Marcos. Of course, right at that time her sheikh fiancee comes to get her (after she called him from a stolen cell phone) with guards and guns. Marcos realizes they can't get out and he wants her to run and save herself. I thought that was sweet. They of course are rescued and the rest of the book continues with Marcos and Tamsin having a whirlwind love affair (still all about the revenge on the sheikh) that will lead to marriage so they can get custody of her younger sister.
The time Marcos and Tamsin spend together is sweet and one scene is pretty hot. I liked that Tamsin fell in love with Marcos and kept pushing him to give up his revenge, that she loved him and just wanted to be with him.
We all know it is a happily ever after so he does give up his revenge. One big complain is that there is no epilogue. I would've liked to see Tamsin reunite with her little sister.
Hmm...I don't really know what to say about this book. It was full of typical HP melodrama. Don't look at motivations too closely or you'll see right through them. There was kidnapping, and virginity and bad reputations built on tabloid rumors, poorly conceived revenge, medieval escape tunnels etc. The basic ingredients. Put in a bowl stir with a spoon. Nothing outstanding here. But comfort food of a sort. The type of thing that you can read in front of the TV and not miss much of the show or the book.
Two things bothered me enough to mention though. One, there is a scene where she is trying on her wedding dress and he comes in and sees her. She tries to get out of sight because of the whole bad luck thing and he chases her down because she is just so sexy and beautiful. Okay that was pretty hot. Then he tears her dress down the front! Because he just can't wait for her hotness long enough to find the zipper! But she's okay with it even though she's spent all afternoon picking it out and it is the dress of every childhood fantasy. WTF? Why do these women never get mad at guys ripping up their clothes? I'm not thinking sexy, I'm thinking about hitting him over the head with the closest lamp.
Second, at the end Marcos comes to Tamsin two days after he gives up his revenge etc. The guy he was after, who had just stolen her brother's wife, got exiled anyway even though Marcos gave up his revenge to be with Tamsin. It's been TWO DAYS and the author has the hero tell the heroine that "the last he'd heard, Aziz was working at a petrol station and Camilla was a dog washer in Cairo." That's just ridiculous. First of all that sentence made it sound like it had been months since this all happened. Second no fancy schmancy sheikh type person would get a job that quickly. "What I'm exiled? No more riches and harems and power for me? No prob, I'll just get a menial job. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner."
There's no way a woman as money hungry as Camilla would have stayed in Cairo to wash dogs. She'd have conned some old geezer out of a plane ticket back to London and then schemed up something to land her a sugar daddy of some sort. People like her don't work unless it's on their backs.
Marcos Ramirez is truly a “dark angel”! This Spanish alpha is to die for, he’s angry, he’s seeking revenge and yet he has a protective and extremely sexy side, he’ll melt your heart.
Tasmin is misunderstood by the press and all of London. She’s been deemed a wild heiress, a flirt and a spoiled beauty and actually she’s none of these…..she’s got a secret and she’ll do anything that has to be done to protect a family member. When Tasmin is kidnapped by the “dark angel” she realizes she is indeed in trouble because if she doesn’t follow her step brother’s instructions to marry the nephew of the sheikh to save the family business, she’ll not only be on the receiving end of his wrath she’ll not be able to protect her ten year old sister from her families abuse.
Marcos is seeking revenge, revenge for the loss of his family due to the Winters family greed and that of Aziz the nephew of the sheikh. He kidnaps Tasmin and is seeking revenge and plans to ruin Aziz and Tasmin’s brother’s business. What neither of them counts on is their strong attraction for each other and in the end they act upon it and can’t seem to stay away from each other.
When the time comes to set the revenge plan in motion, everything is turned upside down. You will be holding your breath during the last few chapters, trying to figure out the outcome. Trust me, it’s thrilling, full of suspense and passion, pleasure and you’ll be shedding some tears as well. It’s a lesson for all to learn……leave the past behind and look towards the future and thanks to Jennie Lucas and The Spaniard’s Defiant Virgin one will see how Marcos gives up revenge for love. A quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”

This was another book that I did enjoy for some of the same reasons in my previous review. of Lynn Raye Harris. There was just no connection there for me and I didn't believe that the main characters for falling in love or were in love by the book end. Then there was no buildup that I need to see in order for me to root for the couple. They just came together way too quickly I fail and no anticipation building it up so that I can enjoy when they finally did get together and become intimate. Instead they just rushed into it and and rushed into intimacy I thought and it just felt unrealistic and really contrived.
Again the concept was interesting with the kidnap and all but that was it then it just felt like a whole rushing towards the end kind of thing. I didn't feel the emotional intensity of the peace and just felt kind of flat for me. I need the rawness and I didn't get that here and I needed it to support the couple. My heart just didn't break while I was reading the story and I need a little heartbreak when reading a romance.
Also I felt there was a lot of repeating in here with the whole him wanting revenge on the guy she was supposed to marry which is why he kidnapped her in the first place to get revenge on him for by taking his intended bride. Was said over and over again I kind a got sick of it and just was over it by halfway through the book. I had enough of that theme in the story and I just needed to be done with. I got that was the obstacle or the conflict for them but I was over it needed something new and interesting so I wasn't bored by it.
There was nothing special about this book when you need me route for the love story that occurred because it just fell flat. I think the repeating didn't help and I felt their first time seeing happened with quickly and just didn't make sense and so many that it was the turn off. For a majority of it I skim through it because I was so bored by then just felt like I read this over and over again. I wasn't overly invested in the stories were the characters which is not a good sign when reading a book and I kind of just slogged through. I didn't see two characters falling in love and that's what a romance should be. It was just way too fast the new development that made me believe that they were in love or they were heading in that direction.
Also I would have liked to have seen a little bit more passion because I didn't feel it. Yes they be love but it was it hot or sexy it was just bland and quit. Too quick for me and I just needed those intense emotions combined with the chemistry and the catthis a more worthwhile love story that I would have liked better. Just was a hot story nor wasn't emotional story at least for my part.
Now usually I like Jenny Lucas books because she knows how to pack an emotional punch as well as passion and deep angst that breaks one heart and also where I feel for the characters, but this one just did not do it for me. And this was one of her earlier books so maybe she just improved on her technique as she went on and learn that the more emotional intensity, passion, and angst which adds to the story and the root able. The characters she has created and her other books have resonated more than Tamsin and Marcos had. Yes it was missing something. I just needed my heart ripped out and I just wanted to be more invested than I was. I just need to feel more and needed it to be a little bit more intense. Now will I still be Jenny Lucas's books of course I will because she's had more hits than misses in my eyes so I won't give up on her as an author. I just needed more from this book that I got. So I look forward to reading Jenny's next book and hopefully it'll be better than this one.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun, emotional read. Marcos kidnaps Tasmin to get back at her family for destroying his own family. He has been planning revenge for 20 years. Tasmin thinks of Marcos as a dark angel. He is the most handsome man she has ever seen, yet he kidnapped her? It does not take too long for Marcos to realize what he thought of Tasmin was wrong. The two are fun together, and the chemistry is red hot!
This so dreadful that I skim read it after the first 2 chapters. Utterly implausible plot lines, unattractive, boring characters. Sorry, barely 2 stars.
I'm sorry, I liked this. It's an early JL so the story has too many wannabe thriller elements. Rather than reporting child abuse and fraud to the police, the characters take us on a whirlwind tour of kidnapping, arranged marriage, conspiracy and theft of intellectual property. And yet, and yet, I really enjoyed it. The H Maxino d'Aquila and h Lucia Ferrazzi were actually pretty close in age and there was a joie de vivre when they were together in later scenes that you don't often get. They went to nightclubs and danced and made love and there were moments that were very sweet and sexy. If you're in the right mood, it's the perfect escape.
Tamsin sebenarnya ogah menikah dgn Azis, demi bisnis keluarga. Tidak dinyana, Tamsin diculik oleh Marcos, yg memiliki misi dendam terhadap keluarganya dan Azis.
Tadinya Tamsin berusaha memperdaya Marcos, termasuk menyerahkan keperawanannya. Siapa nyana akhirnya tumbuh cinta diantara mereka.
Kekurangannya, justru setelah 50% alurnya mulai membosankan. Karakter H/H nya menurut saya kurang berkembang dan terlalu berkutat pada masalah dendam keluarga. Secara keseluruhan masih o.k. utk ukuran sebuah buku Harlequin.

LOLOL. In my defense, I was sick and didn't feel up to any sort of mentally taxing literature. Also, after looking at the rack in the library, I had started to wonder if the titles were slected by some sort of random generator. Apparently the plots are.
I LOVED IT good read wasn't expecting it to be good because i hadn't read this author's work before. *SPOILER* i don't think he ask her to marry him not sure, BUT who cares its still a good book i think personally
o god! i would give it 4stars, but their conversation in his office, when he tells her how his family died and her moral lecture...god it's so boring and dramatic, melodramatic. i'm so disappointed with last pages of the book.
