Nightwing’s worst nightmare is to wake up one day realizing he murdered someone he loves and doesn’t even remember how or why he did it…and that’s exactly the Knightmareverse in which Insomnia has placed him while memories of who Nightwing killed and how he did it start flashing back vividly in his head. To make matters worse, he’ll have to work with his cellmates, Two-Face and Scarecrow, to get out of this one alive…
Becky Cloonan is an American comic book creator, known for work published by Tokyopop and Vertigo. In 2012 she became the first female artist to draw the main Batman title for DC Comics.
Nightwing gets some help from his friends. And when your friends are all Batgirls, that's no small thing.
My biggest complaint with this is the art style. And I'm not saying it's badly drawn or anything, it's that I don't like that thing where the mouths look over-animated. It's the main reason I don't lean toward manga. That big yelling mouth thing, the big eyes crying weird tears, the exaggerated features on the face to show emotion, etc. This wasn't exactly like that, but it was close. At least with Nightwing's character.
Other than that, the story was ok. I enjoyed seeing all the Batgirls show up and kick ass. Dick facing down the man who had his parents killed was...alright. I expected it, so it wasn't particularly exciting, but it also wasn't badly done.
Nightwing is in Arkham for supposedly killing Batman, with Crane as his oddball cellmate. They bond and try to find their way out. Or at least, Nightwing wants out. What Crane wants is anyone's guess.
I thought the ending was sufficiently creepy. Getting close to finishing all of these single issues and looking forward to seeing what happens at the end of Knight Terrors.
wait. does crane have a lil crush on nightwing? (understandable) cuz it seems like it. also. why they kinda yknow...cute together?? am i about to ship... surely not.
I think I'll have to keep an eye out for Cloonan's work in future, because I really enjoyed her work on WW and now this Nightwing story has been one of my faves of the KT run.
There's a lot of depth to his story, and I enjoyed the layers. There's also just some great fun scenes and the characters really shine through.
Artwork was excellent and imaginative, and worked well with the story.
A great addition to the KT story and I'm extra thankful for the solid 'The End!'
This was my favourite entry to the series by far. So much happened in just a few pages, and I loved every minute of it. I so badly wish this was more than a 2 parter though, this might be one of my favourite Nightwing stories yet.
Part 2 of 2 (as mentioned, this is a tie-in to a larger story with the new villain Insomnia)
Nightwing and Crane try to save Oracle and escape, only to find themselves in the backrooms. Dick, with the help of the other Batgirls, must fight and face his fears.
I found this to be more humorous than scary. The strange dream-like quality of how the rogues appear in the cafeteria made me giggle. My top 3: -Killer Croc has a purse for a head -Penguin is an actual penguin -Killer Moth is distracted by the lights
To be honest, this doesn't really seem like Dick's nightmare. What is his greatest fear(s)? I don't think I really understand the ending. If there isn't a showdown between Insomnia and Scarecrow in the main story, I'll be sad.
The descriptions really don't match what's happening in the comic overall.
Unless Two Face is in there and I missed it, as a character with dialogue who shows up in more than maybe a background panel.
It wasn't really just Nightwing, either, it's the batgirls, but it was a good wrap. Dick facing his fears kind of a thing and learning how get through it. I felt like the cover was a lot more dramatic and grotesque than the comic. Which was good.
But I don't really see how this was a worst fear for him, he didn't really seem all that upset or phased. Not like in the Robin one, where it actually seemed to be causing problems.
It's just interesting food for thought kinda things to me.
Rounding up. The blurb doesn't really match the story. The hype and covers were better than what we got. Even in his nightmare, Dick is true to himself. The "I got you" panels just melted my heart. This doesn't seem like a nightmare for Dick. He's steady throughout and that's why the last thing he says makes little sense to me. He handled his nightmare better than Batman handled his, but maybe because Dick is so down to Earth and empathetic, it was harder for Insomnia to really go at him? IDK. This one missed the mark for me, but was still fairly enjoyable as a one off.
I liked these! Nightmares proper and dream logic are really rich tools for storytelling, and they're just kind of exciting as a possibility space. I think these two books did a nice job of doing some imaginative, unrestrained storytelling with our friend Dick.
Because of how suddenly it starts and how self-contained it feels, I think it can only achieve so much, but it's all pretty good!
I'm not going to prioritize it too anxiously, but I really am interested to see other characters' nightmares through this event.
I LOVE THE ART STYLE SO MUCH. that being said.. what exactly his greatest fear is confuses me. is it killing batman? or just someone he loves/cares about? or was it the circus where his parents died? like I'm slightly confused where that came from.
loved the dynamic between scarecrow and Nightwing, they r so silly
in my humblest opinion the night wing KT volumes were the absolute best of the whole event. Well written with amazing artists for both issues and had all of my fave characters! a 5/5 on both issues for me!
This one was a tiny bit better. The banter between Dick and Scarecrow was able to carry the issue along fine enough, and they do seem to hint at something between them in the future, but I couldn’t really give a shit aside from that.
I liked it. I enjoyed the buddy duo of Jonathan Crane and Dick Grayson lmao. Some of the art was so disturbing like the body but it was good! The story itself was pretty alright. I liked that Dick ended up facing Zucco. Solid stuff.

I had like the first Knight Terrors Nightwing, but that second one let me down. Just didn't like it at all! Overall, even if I will finish the main arc, that KT series wasn't a great success for me!
I quite liked this one. Damien still takes the Robin MVP, but this comic was fun. Was interesting seeing Nightwing and Scarecrow being pally. I also enjoyed how this 2 parter completely wrapped up.
