The exciting sequel to THE DREAM KEEPER by Award-winning author, Mikey Brooks.
When Parker’s mom is dreamnapped by the wicked Mab, it is up to him and Kaelyn to save her. When they return to Dreams, they discover Mab isn’t their only problem. Gladamyr has lost his powers and the only way to get them back is to become what he fears the most — a nightmare.
Mikey Brooks is a small child masquerading as adult. On occasion you’ll find him dancing the funky chicken, singing like a banshee, and pretending to have never grown up. He is the author/illustrator of several books including BEAN’S DRAGONS, the ABC ADVENTURES series, and author of the middle-grade fantasy-adventure novel, THE DREAM KEEPER. He spends most of his time playing with his daughters and working as a freelance illustrator. Mikey has a BS degree in Creative Writing from Utah State University. He is also one of the hosts of the Authors’ Think Tank Podcast.
Aside from writing and illustrating, Mikey also love to read middle-grade and young adult fiction, narrate picture books, sing, and even sew. That’s right he also sews! He’s made practically everything from, Elizabethan costumes for the Utah Shakespearean Festival, to modern style wedding dresses. Mikey’s greatest love is his family. He gets more than inspiration from them; he gets support, courage, and most of all happiness.
What a ride have I had with The Dreamstone by Mikey Brooks. Mikey relates a fast paced fantasy story full of many characters to please the hardest kids out there. With pirates, fairies, dream keepers, dragons, zombies, worms Centaurs, ogre and more, they will keep you reading to the last page. I believe everyone will find something in every turn of the pages. It has battles with the most interesting enemies you can imagine and many turns and twists. In book two of the Dream Keeper Chronicles, Parker and Kaelyn’s new adventure is to face Mab who has dreamnapped Parker’s mom. Now he needs to rescue her and go home so things can get back to normal. The problem is that everything in dreamland is broken, burned or not working. The inhabitants have too much to do and there is not half as many people as they need to get everything in top shape. Even Gladamyr has lost his powers and you know what that means…The worst is that no one knows where Mab is as she changes her residence often. How can you find someone that moves all the time? This is far out good and entertaining. It will become a pre-teen to young adult and the young of heart’s favorite. The tale is clean, wholesome and riveting. It is must have in every home and school library.
The Dreamstone: Tell me it isn't true dragons aren't evil or are they? After what I thought was the thrill ride of a story The Dream Keeper was I realized that The Dreamstone was an even bigger wild ride that I had not been prepared for. To find one of my nost favorite magical characterdragons could be evil and just plain nasty I began to worry if Parker and Kaelyn would make it out of the dream realm alive. As the enter to save Parker's mom from the evil Queen Mab things begin to fall apart and nothing is what it seems. Glaamyr's abilities to shift are fading and time is of the essence. The dream realm becomes what they feared most a nightmare. Trying to save Parker's mom just became a maze of magic wonders that will leave the reader on the edge of their seat begging for answers they will only find as they read further in if they aren't afraid of what may be lurking in the shadows. All I will say is that I truly hope there is more to this series as I am enamored with it and what to no more about Parker and his adventures!
I enjoyed the first book in this series well enough, but the follow-up fails to offer much more. The world of Dreaming was quite well established in the first volume, and in the second it is under threat - from a plague of dragons. Not only that, but Mab has kidnapped Parker's mother and Gladamyr has lost his shifting powers. It is time for Parker and Kaelyn to return and save the realm of Dreams.
Overall, the plot moves at a good pace, with plenty of action and excitement. It is different, and exciting, with a good blend of characters - both young and old, male and female. Parker's mother is particularly awesome. There are some nifty twists that, although not entirely unexpected, were quite satisfying.
I did find that the repeated accusation of "Loser" was getting rather tiresome, making me feel this is a story that would resonate better with the audience it is intended for (the ten plus crowd) rather than me, an adult reading a children's book.
Ebook provided via NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Thanks!
At the begging of my two children (ages 5 and 8), I read this book to them immediately after reading them Dream Keeper. This series is a new favorite in our family. My kids love it, as do I. Mikey's imagination is so vivid and fresh. My kids were hooked from the start. I loved the fact that I didn't have to fight them about going to bed. All I had to say was I'm going to their room to read Dream Stone and they'd come running! My eight-year-old especially loves these books. If you ask him who is favorite author is, he'll answer with no hesitation. It's Mikey Brooks!!! :-) Thank you Mikey, for another winning book!!
I loved the first two books in this series. They're fun, fast-paced, and take you into the world of dreams. I love the uniqueness of the dream world. While the Mares are something I could do without, I would love to have the power to dream anything I wanted. The second book is intense from start to finish as Parker must fight to save his mom. He has great friends to help him out. I would recommend this to any middle-grade child but I think anyone would enjoy it, regardless of age. I can't wait for book three!!

** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK, BY THE AUTHOR, IN RETURN FOR AN HONEST REVIEW **
This book was action-packed! From start to finish, there was always something going on, keeping me from putting it down.
There's not a lot I can say about this book without giving away spoilers of books 1, or this one, so I'm going to keep it simple and to the point. I LOVED IT! It was so full of adventure, excitement and the characters, though we knew them already, were just as exciting to read as in book 1, when we didn't know them. I did a lot of fist pumping and 'YES!!' when a character I loved from book 1 had a less uncertain future ;) To find out what that means, you'll have to read the series.
What I really loved, was that each of the characters kept growing and expanding, even after everything they'd gone through in book 1. They still have struggles and arguments in this book, which helps them get closer to each other and their group of friends. I will say that I suspected Jason's part in it all, though I did hope that he'd been mean to Parker in hopes of goading him into confessing about Dreams, so that they could talk about it and share it. I also hoped he'd called Parker to let him know what had happened to his mom, but I wasn't all that surprised that I was wrong.
I'm really interested to see how this story develops into the next book. There's a lot of sacrifice and nail biting moments in this book that had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I was really happy to find out more about Liz and see that she was finally understanding that she hadn't always been there for Parker when he needed her. I loved his reunion with his dad and was pleased that things were finally starting to come together for him.
I absolutely loved the Driag scene. It was so touching and gut-wrenching. The whole thing was one of my favourite moments of the book, of which there were many. The way the characters connect with each other and learn about themselves is very unique and sort of magical in this series.
I'm really intrigued by Cato and what his part in book 3 will be. His connection with Kaelyn offers a lot of potential for his future.
My favourite quote would have to be this one: ““OMG!” Parker hooted. “You're amazing!” “Shut up and think for me,” she snapped. “I'm getting all these images of Lara Croft from you – I need ice!” Parker literally shook the thoughts out of his head and began to think of the icebergs in the arctic. He would ask Kaelyn later how she had known about the superhot character from this favourite video game.” It's so typically Parker and say a lot for the future of their relationship, as they move forward into book 3. I can't wait to see how these 14-year -old kids manage to save Dreams and learn who they really are.
One more think – OH. MY. GOD! The end…Allyon…the librarian…Mab… I can't say anything about any of it, until you've read the book, but believe me it's SHOCKING!
I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook version of this novel. My daughter is an auditory learner, and she prefers audio books to the printed variety. For kids like her (who may struggle with reading the traditional way), this series is an excellent choice for hooking them on books! It has action, magic, strong characters, and life lessons all rolled into a neat little package that is sure to please any middle grader. Beyond that, the audiobook is a quality piece of work. The narrator was expressive and highly skilled. He gave a distinct voice to each of the characters that fit them perfectly. It was a pleasure to listen to!
The Dreamstone picks up right where The Dreamkeeper left off. Parker and his friend Kaelyn must go back to the world of dreams to rescue Parker’s mother, who has been kidnapped by the wicked Queen Mab. They find the dream world in disarray, with dragons attacking willy nilly. Their friend Gladamyr loses his power to shift, and they have no idea where Mab’s wandering realm is located. It seems the only way to unravel all their problems is to visit the Crystal Table once again, but what price will the table exact this time?
With each book the author releases, his writing quality gets better and better! I've read all of his middle grade books, and I thought Mikey Brooks really hit his stride with this one! All the characters are solid, with real problems they’re struggling to overcome, like Parker’s anger at his estranged dad. Through the course of events, he learns how to begin the forgiveness process. I love it when a character grows and becomes a better person by the end of a book, and I found myself cheering for Parker and Kaelyn as they made the difficult choice to stand up for what’s right, pitting themselves against the more popular crowd at school. Moreover, their friendship continued to grow and develop in this novel, and I can’t wait to see where they’ll go from here.
The plot was well-paced and flowed naturally from one hurdle to the next. The only problem I have with this series is that the author likes to end on cliff-hangers, leaving us poor readers begging for the next installment! (Do I hear an evil laugh?)
Kids aren’t the only ones who will gobble up this series faster than a plateful of pastries. In my mind, it’s right up there with Fablehaven, Far World, and the host of other National bestsellers that have graced the middle grade shelves in recent years. You won't be disappointed by The Dreamstone!
Frankly, this book is amazing. How on earth does anyone have an imagination that can conjure up this kind of story, with its complex characters and relationships? Not me. Never. But, wow, how captivating and compelling. I got a lot of great background messages from this script. In some ways those messages reminded me of “Star Wars.” They teach without preaching. They “show” with the action of words.
I listened to it on Audible. I’m a visual person, though, so I think I would enjoy the printed book even more. But don’t misunderstand me. The narration was done extremely well.
In Dreams there is a nice place where good Dreams happen and a bad place called Nightmares where bad dreams are born.
There is a gateway in Dreams where there is Keys. Each person has a Key when the gateway is taken over. All the Keys go back to their Hooks except for Parker and Kaelyn.
My favorite part in the book was when Parker and Kaelyn thought they were smart and athought of a "Dreamcatcher".
I'd recommend this book for its imagination and adventures.
This was a great 2nd book in the The Dream Keeper Chronicles. The Dreamstone had even more adventure and suspense than the first book. The bond between Parker and Kaelyn intensified and they were able to meet some fantastical problems as well as real-life problems head on. My family, ages 4 to 30-something, read this together and we all gave it 2-thumbs up.
