Penguin Books deserve all credit for bringing these titles within reach of the reader for there are 600 or 700 titles covering literature, drama, philosophy, history, ancient religions and more. And they cover a wide range of years from the writings of early days to modern writings and include works by authors from many different countries.
It is good to be reminded of long forgotten authors such as the poets Arthur Hugh Clough and John Clare and to see how the selection process works for different authors. One surprise to me is that while 'The Three Musketeers' is included in Alexandre Dumas' works, 'The Count of Monte Cristo' is not and the latter is equally as good as the former, if not a tad better!
Robert Louis Stevenson was represented by only 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' but then an addendum in this edition adds 'Weir of Hermiston', perhaps an unusual choice.
A good book to browse and be reminded of works by authors that one does not normally study.
