Determined to avoid this fate, Lavina threw herself on the mercy of the Marquis of Elswick, a disagreeable man who had turned his back on the world following betrayal by the woman he had loved. Surprisingly, he agreed to help by pretending to be engaged to Lavina, and, with her father, they left to visit her relatives in Scotland.
In the highlands Lavina began to find herself attracted to the Marquis. Beneath his harsh manners he had a heart - a heart that perhaps she could win.
But nearby was the Queen's country home, Balmoral, and when Her Majesty arrived with Prince Stanislaus, they knew that there was still a battle to be fought.
Now Lavina learned the shattering secret that was the real reason the Marquis had agreed to help her. And that secret was to threaten to take from her the man she loved.
How she discovered the truth in a way that nearly cost him his life, is told in this romantic novel .

Barbara Cartland introduced me to the Historical Romance genre when I was a young adult.

The locations, the characters, the romance fed my youthful fantasies. These are the first Cartland books I've read in almost 50 years. I was curious how they held up to the current crop of historical romance novelists. They have lost none of the charm that first captured my imagination. I think I'm going to start over and read them ALL again.

I absolutely adore Barbara Cartland novels. I used to pick up 3 of her books in the library at the weekend and read them on the train on the way to work during the week. I discovered a love for her historical romances, especially as good triumphs over evil every time.
Her novels impart snippets of information about the places and historical periods in which they are set, which adds to my enjoyment. Each is a delight to read, if a little formula.
I downloaded this one to see if the stories could still hold my attention - I read 'Love in the Highlands' in the early '80s - and I can confirm that they are still as captivating as they were in my youth.
