As the Beta of the Spruce Hollow pack, Roan Sabre's a dominant and self assured Were. Life's pretty good for him. He's got a hot, beautiful girlfriend and his job as pack enforcer has earned him the respect of his pack members, time and time again.

But when the Fates deliver Roan's blood born mate into his arms much too early, he scrambles to build a life around the young, curly haired Aspen Greystone without taking her as his own.

Everything in Roan's carefully constructed universe is about to fall apart when the force of nature that is his young mate finally begins to recognise the deep connection that exists between them for what it really is.

Will Roan's loyalty ultimately lie with his girlfriend, the Were pack or with his beautiful young mate, who is quickly becoming the woman who will set his blood on fire?

I am a Paranormal Romance author and blogger. My debut novel, Temptation(Journal of the Wolves of Spruce Hollow) Book 1 is now available on Amazon.com. I am constantly fascinated by the dichotomy of "Good" and "Evil" that lurks within the human psyche. I am philosophical, quirky and sometimes sarcastic and funny. Someone once called me a "tart", but I can only assume that's because I'm sweet and delicious :D

2.5 “no Jacob” Stars
Remember how Jacob imprinted on baby Renesmee, and it wasn't creepy at all?? All he wanted was to keep her safe, and be her loyal protector until she grew up, and would love him back. Well that's pretty much the scenario we have here, except Roan is no Jacob... like at all. The blurb on this intrigued me, meeting your blood mate while dating someone else ... awkward!! But it sure didn't go the way I thought it would, and the LOL thing is…that this is on several True mate and Fated mate book lists. I’m going to spoiler tag the rest in case someone wants to go in completely blind… which is what I did… and wish I wouldn’t have. 😊

Well that was ... unexpected.

Honestly, when I first read the blurb I thought the book sounded creepy. Which peaked my interest. I know, there's something wrong with me. So I came to Goodreads and found from the reviews that the end was totally worth it.

So I figure I'll give it a shot.

Honest to God, I almost DNF'd this book.

Let me explain, while I make this the most bass ackwards review possible.

What I didn't love:

For starters, Roan. I thought he was a slimy douchebag, and had he been my mate I would've castrated him. IF HE WAS LUCKY.

Structurally there was also a lot of info dumps and some weird circular bits and I felt like things were repeated.

Like I said, I almost DNF'd.

But I carried on because of the supposed cliffhanger.

Guys, the cliffhanger is not why you should read this book.

What I loved:

Aspen finds out something not so nice about her beloved Roan, and in response she finally acts the way I've always wanted at least one heroine in a romance book to act.

She flips shit.

Then there's the cliffhanger that leaves you going "Really Roan? Bro, I know we've had our differences, and I sort of want to sand your nards then sprinkle them with Frank's Red Hot ... but does this seem like a good idea to you? Aspen is going to mutilate you ..."

Who I'd recommend this book to:

Anyone who can see past the tricky bits at the beginning to the truly epic moments of female vengeance towards the end.

It was a struggle to keep reading. The male lead is a controlling jerk who cannot make up his mind, and we get to read his internal back and forth in every, single chapter. We also get to be reminded in every, single chapter, that he is the beta, that Aspen is his mate, and that she is too young.

Had a lot of potential but.....

One of the main things I like about shifter books, apart from the fact that the males are always tall, muscular and hot of course is the fated mates part. I love the fact that there's one true mate out there, in some books they spend their entire life searching, in this case it's difficult because Roan Sabre meets his mate when he's sixteen and she's only six years old.
As soon as I started reading I was hooked and loving it but unfortunately it didn't stay that way because while I loved the idea behind it, the book itself didn't really work for me, there was a lot of repetition, it seemed overlong and at times probably due to the repetition. At times I just wanted to get Roan and Aspen and bang their heads together. I know Roan is in an untenable position but seriously grow a pair and step up, pushing Aspen away all the time isn't going to work and don't get me started on Aspen, I know she's an emotional teenager I've had three of them myself but if I had to read another 'I love you' 'I hate you' I was going to go nuts.
On finishing this book my overwhelming feeling was one of disappointment, it could have been so good but I didn't like the way it was handled and as for how it ended....the next book 'Seduction' is out and on KU but the way I feel at the moment I can't see me continuing on.

That blurb was super misleading! The story was more like Roan found Aspen when she was 6, she was adopted into the pack and Roan was always with her as a quasi friend/mentor/father figure. Now Aspen is 16 and a horny teenager but Roan at age 26 (rightly!) thinks she's still to young to mate. But of course because of plot, he never actually explains any of this to Aspen. Roan has had girlfriends to ease his lust but his current girlfriend barely makes an appearance and doesn't even have a single line of dialogue. Honestly, this whole book really did read like a journal with most of the story and background being told in info dumps throughout. There's dual POVs and Aspen really did have the voice of an immature, horny teenager which wasn't particularly entertaining to read. Even though Roan is trying to make the right decisions, the age gap is still uncomfortable especially since he's also kind of her guardian and was with her the entire time she was growing up. Also there's various sprinklings of misogyny throughout what with Aspen having whore makeup, etc. Definitely will not be reading the next book.

Oh no no no, I demand the next book IMMEDIATELY. I haven't read a book with a cliffhanger in so long that I almost forgot what one was....Alllllmost.

Now I get this?!

*hysterical sobbing forever* I loved both the lead characters but holy hell was that wolf man stupid. I kept screaming at the screen "Tell the truth! Just fucking tell her the truth! Leave Andie and tell her the fucking truth!" and at no point in this book was my anger satisfied. I wanted to punch him. Literally punch him... In the face.

Please PLEASE publish the next book soon, even if the editing is absolute shit, I won't complain as long as I get to see the ending ASAP.

Need. The. Next. Book. NOW! I can't believe it ended like that and Roan is so stupid, obviously Jude is going to come along for her now. He is a total moron, he's going to lose her completely.

There was a lot of descriptive writing in this book. I understand that we needed to understand the were culture so we could have a better idea of the relationship of our two MC. However, I would’ve enjoyed more conversation between them. As for the H, he totally never explained his actions to the h and I got frustrated with that. But I loved the mate storyline, and overall it was a good read. Just wish there wasn’t a continuation into another book.

Nope... I tried. They don't speak to each other much. It is all internal dialogue and flashbacks to past conversations. Hero calls her "little girl" about every 5 seconds in his head and out loud to remind him that she is only 16. I need something to make this book not feel like a total creeper situation. After looking at other reviews to see we don't even get an ending to this story; nope I can't read another book like this one. Pass.

This would have been a much better book if the author didn’t repeat herself so much. We only need to read about the role of a Beta and a Pack Enforcer the once and not the 3-4 times that she explained it. The same can be said about how serious the issue of ‘mates’ are to Weres and that finding your true mate isn’t a joking matter. The book tells their stories from their own POV and it allows us to understand what they are truly thinking and feeling. That POV also includes the wolf element of Roan’s Were personality which is a separate and distinct entity. It’s a symbiotic relationship in which Roan’s wolf is especially argumentative when it comes to their mate.

Roan is a Were who has dreamt about his mate since he was a teenager and always knew he would find her one day. He just didn’t expect to find her at the local swimming pool when he was 16 and she was 6! Aspen was on an outing with the other children from her foster home when she met him at the pool. Being a typical friendly 6 year old human, she told him all about herself….. enough that his Alpha was able to locate her in the care system and arrange for her to be adopted by one of the pack members. Right from the start, it is made clear that Aspen was far too young to be changed and that she needs the time and space to grow up and become the adult she is meant to be. And that is the way their relationship started, with Roan acting as her big brother. But the relationship changed so much over the years that Valerie, Aspen’s adoptive mother, left much of the child rearing to Roan, to the extent that he actually moved in with them to keep a closer eye on Aspen. He also paid ‘maintenance’ to Valerie. This meant that Roan became a big brother/father figure/friend who kept Aspen on a short leash and therein lays the problem for me.

For her part, Aspen doesn’t know that she is Roan’s Mate although she is obviously fully aware that Weres exist. She has always trusted Roan and knows that she can rely on him to be there no matter what, which is especially important considering her less than ideal childhood. She has never questioned the role he has played in her life but at 16 and left alone for a weekend, she decides to rebel and go to a party that she knows Roan and her mother would never allow her to go to. But she does so with the knowledge that as they’re away, they will never find out! Unfortunately for her, Roan has come home unexpectedly and is furious when he discovers that not only is she drunk, but that she has been making out with a boy that she likes from school. This rebelliousness is not a side to Aspen that Roan has had experience of or likes, but he still decides to keep their relationship as Mates secret, which backfires spectacularly!! The main problem for Roan is that he has kept such a close eye on Aspen as she has grown up that he hasn’t noticed how much she has matured and developed as he still sees her as his ‘little girl’.

His reluctance to tell her that they are true Mates is because if he changes her at 16, the longevity of a Were’s life means it will take her even longer to mature so he has one life with Aspen and another ‘secret’ life away from her. A secret life that includes a girlfriend….. Aspen’s reaction to the discovery that Roan has a girlfriend is cataclysmic and she has a total emotional meltdown. She attends the New Years’ Eve party at Sorcha’s farm and plans to leave town early the next day and never come back. Unfortunately for her, Roan takes over again and her plan to flee doesn’t go according to plan!

I liked this story but there was one particular issue that left me feeling uncomfortable more or less from the beginning…. Namely the issue of child grooming. Yes the relationship between Roan and Aspen has always been platonic, but I can’t quite get away from the thought that he has somehow ‘moulded’ her into what he wants her to be, especially as she is his Mate, his lifelong partner. Perhaps if she had been adopted into the pack and Roan watched out for her from afar until she was of a suitable age, it might have been more palatable to me rather than him spending a part of each and every day with her, dictating to her what she could and couldn’t do and micromanaging every part of her life.

What an introduction to a new Pack! You find out in the book that usually a mate will only show her/himself when the time is right. So when Roan finds his mate at 16, you might think that that's young. But when you find out that his mate is 10 years younger then it puts a whole new slant on it. Tarrah Betts has done a wonderful job of using a new storyline and dealing with it in a superb manner. In no way is this 'icky' or 'wrong'. Roan becomes Aspen's big brother equivalent. When everyone else in her short life has let her down, he is her go-to man. If she needs him, he is there. AND IT IS PURELY PLATONIC!!! Just repeating that part again as one of the reviews I've read doesn't appear to have picked up on that.

Of course, Roan is older than her and a Were so he knows that she is his mate and he loves and wants her but he is waiting to let her mature. Aspen is a human and doesn't know that she is Roan's mate but she knows what she feels for him. Of course, at 16 she feels that she is ready for anything when the world is really still there for her to explore. Of course, there is a lot of time put into how gorgeous, ripped, muscular etc the Weres are, which was okay but really, for me, it's almost a given that most Paranormals are gorgeous. I don't think I've read one yet with a less than stunning male or female!

This book really dragged me in to the story. I thought it was all very well thought out and the plot timing was brilliant. To give different perspectives as a 26 year old Were and a 16 year old Human and make them fit and make sense must be hard to do but it makes for easy reading. I loved how the wolf was almost a separate entity from Roan but still a symbiotic relationship.

The ending is perfect for the book but leaves you teetering on a cliffhanger and also with a book hangover! I was up most of the night trying to figure out which way the story will go. If you like Paranormal Romance then definitely try this one.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I more than liked it!!
***Received from StoryCartel for an honest review

The cover is beautiful and totally the reason I was drawn to this book.

This book is a nice start to a series. It definitely draws you into Aspen and Roan’s lives and issues. This is the first book by Tarrah.

It did take me a while to get used to Tarrah’s writing style, but I can’t put my finger on what it is that caused it. I definitely wish that there was more action rather than teen angst because I wanted an action packed read. This book is all about the drama of having a mate who is too young to claim who gets into lots of teen trouble. This almost seems like a YA book with the teen drama, but I know it is much too mature. This is not the typical shifter romance because Aspen is still just sixteen.

Tarrah is really good at showing you how Aspen feels especially the second half of the book which is what won me over from just liking this book. The one thing that killed me is where she left off because you have no idea what is going to happen, and I can’t see read what happens next because it isn’t out yet. I am definitely going to read book 2 when it comes out.

I loved this book. I loved the chemistry between Roan and Aspen. They have this love/hate relationship. This book made me laugh, made me angry, and made me smile.

Roan Sabre is a Were and Beta of Spruce Hollow pack. He finds his mate at the wrong time and has to adjust his life around Aspen Greystone. He was a teen that was going through transition and she was a cute 6 year old in foster care. The pack brings Aspen to Spruce Hollow and places her in the care of Valerie a female Were who recently lost her mate. 10 years later and Roan is struggling between taking Aspen as his mate or letting her be a normal teenager until she grows up. She makes in laugh and drives him up a wall. The more Aspen tries to get close to Roan the more He pulls away.

Unfortunately for Roan, Aspen finds out the secret. She flips out like any normal girl would do. He chooses to step back and let her grow up without him. The cliffhanger in this book kills me I wanted to find out what happened. This book was so good I could not put it down I had to finish the book and now I'm going insane trying to figure out what happened to Aspen and Roan.

By that I mean I felt so bad for Aspen at times I wanted to slap some sense into Roan. On the other hand he was right she needed to mature. There were times I wanted her to be with someone else just to get even. After all he was allowed to have girlfriends why shouldn't she have boyfriends? I hated that it ended the way it did. I wanted to know now that things would work out. I am looking forward to reading book 2.

cliffhanger!!!

As I read the final sentence, I seriously contemplated throwing my danged kindle. I rarely read a book with out scanning reviews but stupidly I did so and am now paying the price for it. The book is a bit too repetitive and overall the story fell flat for me though it had a lot of potential. So not what I had thought it would be when I picked it up. Not a horrible book but I don't think I'll read the second. I get enough bs out of reality. I'd like a little happiness in my books but there just was no give here. Roan just keeps pissing me off. Aspen is annoying as all get out. And honestly. While I want to know how it ends I've read the blurb and reviews for the next in series and pretty much know I won't like the continuance of the story. Not a bad writer but not for me.

The end

*SPOILER ALERT*

This was an interesting story although I find that sometimes the main characters were annoying. The major issue that I found with the book is that although it had a good numbers of pages it was of a complete story. I felt a little cheated that after I read the book and got caught up in the story it didn't ha e a real ending. I thought that it was going to be a series about the other people that was introduced in the story but since this didn't have a ending I guess the next book will be the ending. Although I want to know what happens I'm not sure if I will get book two. I have to sleep on it.

First off, I hate the ending! Cliffhangers suck. Having said that, I loved this book. The story line was quite good. Roan is such a jerk throughout. The way his character is written, it's a wonder Aspen didn't kill him off. I had a love/hate feeling towards him while the story progressed. Aspen is such a great lead. She is quite feisty and outspoken. Great combo for such an important role. The dynamics between Roan and Aspen are undeniably leading to a romance, sure to shift the planets alignment. The characters are all great. I loved the banter between the Were men. I now have to read the next book in this series. This is a great add to your tbr list.

You mean to tell that I forced myself to slog through what, in reality, SHOULD have been at most, a 10 page prologue only to find out that there's no ending!?!?! I don't give a rat's behind what happens to any of these people! If I could I would give negative stars. Bad enough that the story could have easily been edited down to basically nothing but to insult the readers that actually managed to get through it with no real ending. Horrible!

This was so good! I was a little wary of the age difference between Roan and Aspen but the author handled this theme very well. There is not much action in this story though instead it lays out the foundation for how these characters interact, their motivations and feelings. I wish it hadn't ended in a cliffhanger, so frustrating! I hope the sequel gets released soon....

Absolutely loved this book, as it's quite unlike any Shifter romance I've read; it was a little confusing at first seeing events from the different points of view, but it worked so well. I was hooked and fortunate enough to have read this the day before Seduction was released as I was hanging from the proverbial cliff by my fingernails to find out what happened next...

I am fascinated by the story and want to read more to find out what happens. I am just unsure about the long winded explanations. Maybe I am just used to fast paced books but in the end I thought this was definitely slow. I am disliking Roan and his double standards. This whole thing is quite complicated.

I loved this book! Give me stories about werewolves and possessive, desperate love and I'm there! I can't wait for the next one. I hope the author starts it when Aspen has had some time to grow up. Then bring back Roan so he can rock her world ;)
Waiting for the next one!

This was a great beginning to a story. I immediately got sucked into the world of Aspen and Roan and didn't want the story to end.
Roan was the type of male character that I like in paranormal romance. Hard, unyielding, bossy and desperately in love. Looking forward to the next one.

The reading was different. I don't usually read books that are told from the character's point of view. It was a bit drawn out and slow. Only reason I am reading the second book is because I would like to see what becomes of Aspen and Roan.
