MY THOUGHTS:
Though Marcus Warner will surely contribute much more to the world's library throughout the course of his lifetime, this book, "Breakthrough," could still be considered a magnum opus of sorts. It shows both individuals in need of healing and those helping others how to address all relevant factors to overcome the issues hindering them from thriving emotionally and personally.
Sharing this book with anyone you know who works in addiction recovery or in ministering to or serving the deeply traumatized would be absolutely invaluable.
I very much appreciate how this book takes an honest look and makes a thorough assessment of how we can fall short when we focus only on one modality of healing rather than taking a comprehensive approach that addresses all factors.
Whether you are a pastor, therapist, addiction recovery director, or simply an individual who wants to help yourself or those around you find healing and wholeness, overcome addiction, trauma, and reach maturity, I believe you cannot go wrong with putting this book front and center on your shelf as a reference for both where to start and why, as well as how to proceed.
OVERVIEW OF BOOK:
In "Breakthrough," Marcus Warner presents a comprehensive approach to emotional healing and spiritual development, emphasizing the necessity of addressing issues holistically. The BUILD model represents the key factors of our Body, Beliefs, Bonds, the Holy Spirit, and Demonic influences, underscoring the interconnectedness of our physical state, beliefs, relationships, God’s presence with us, and spiritual warfare in our emotional and spiritual health.
Warner advocates for a maturity model rooted in developing a strong identity in Christ and emotional regulation skills, pointing out that deficiencies in attachment and identity formation from a young age can significantly affect our maturity and contribute to ongoing struggles such as those struggling with addiction may experience. He highlights the critical role of joyful attachments in overcoming substance abuse and improving mental health, and how our attachment style influences even our relationship with God.
The book emphasizes the importance of the effect our physical bodies, our beliefs, and our bonds with God and others have on our emotional well-being, and highlights listening prayer as a tool for inviting the Holy Spirit into the healing process, enabling individuals to overcome lies with truth and foster a deeper, joy-filled relationship with God. It also addresses the reality of demonic influences, asserting that Christians should take a balanced and biblical approach to this area and recognize that day have authority over these influences but must discern and address permissions that allow demons to affect them.
Warner calls on churches to develop comprehensive ministries that address the physical, emotional, spiritual, and relational dimensions of individuals' lives, stressing the importance of individualized care that accounts for emotional maturity and capacity. Through the BUILD model, Warner provides a practical guide for spiritual growth that recognizes healing journeys often unfold in seasons, with different focuses at different times, ultimately leading to dynamic change when supported by an integrative approach.
