This classic work by Edward McKendree Bounds has been, for the most part, out of print for years, but is now available to you in a digital format. This text holds true to the original, and is a great book concerning the work of our adversary, the devil, to oppose and hinder those who would seek to honor God.

Edward McKendree Bounds was a Methodist minister, revivalist, author and lawyer.
Unsuccessful in the California gold rush of 1849, E.M. Bounds returned home to Missouri and became the state’s youngest practicing attorney at age 19. In his early twenties he was deeply impacted by the Third Great Awakening, and at age 24 he was ordained for ministry. During his lifetime he pastored churches, traveled as an evangelist, served as a Civil War chaplain, edited a Christian periodical and was a devoted husband and father. But E.M. Bounds is best known for prayer. His daily habit was to spend the time between 4 am and 7 am praying. His writings on prayer are widely acclaimed to be among the finest of any author before or since.
E.M. Bounds has certainly written an extensive, if not exhaustive, account of Satan as he is described in the Bible. Though Jesus is central to the Bible, E.M. Bounds makes a compelling case for acknowledging and fighting Satan and his craft. Satan is a contrast, a great enemy of Christ; he lies, deceives, and manipulates for the purpose of opposing God and destroying man, for keeping the lost from finding Christ and keeping the disciples of Christ from maturity. And these ploys are often covert - unseen.
This book's diction is a bit hard to follow, but the basic message is pretty easy to get; it is a must read for really anybody wanting to investigate who Satan is and how he works in the world, especially Christians with little knowledge of him.
This book was solid and powerful. It is so easy to forget in this day and age that we have a very powerful enemy who is seeking to destroy us. Speak of a real devil today and people think you are nuts, but what else can explain the Hitlers, Stalins, Pol Pots, Idi Amins, and all the long history of unspeakable cruelty that is at the heart of so many powerful despots. Think of the deranged serial killers who have no actual pathology that a clinic can test for. Think of the many places where people could choose good and they choose evil. It is very much with us in the form of a mind, an entity who functions with an intelligence and ruthlessness far beyond our own.
I once heard someone say that if the Devil didn't exist, then someone was taking great pains to do his work. It seems that we have tried to rid ourselves of the devil by denying that almost nothing is a sin. This is a very basic book that paints a very realistic picture. The great lay theologian, C. S. Lewis created a master devil called Screwtape who wrote letters of instruction to his novice tempter, Wormwood. E. M. Bounds gives us the Biblical passages that were fleshed out in The Screwtape Letters.
This is not a book you can read quickly and there are passages that you wish there weren't so much evidence for as you would rather convince yourself more easily that they didn't mean what you know they mean.
Lesser known book by E.M. Bounds. Bounds effectively brings the lens of scripture over the subject of satan. Well written, orderly laid thoughts that increased my alertness in considering the nature of the influences surrounding us on a daily basis. Definitely worth the read.
Our society does not take Satan seriously. There are so many cartoons that downplay his great power and influence. He is seen as something funny, almost harmless, and that is completely inaccurate, as every true Christian knows. So it was nice to pick up a book where Satan is shown for what he is: the one who defies God and plots to destroy mankind.
The author takes Satan seriously, and he does his best to convey the true nature of this terrible being. With his usual powerful language and biblical references, Bounds explores the enemy of our souls and sheds much needed light on the focused, untiring, industrious nature of this fallen angel. Take his warnings seriously, because Satan is a terrible enemy, and most Christians are unaware of how fierce he is, and they don’t know how to fight this cunning foe.
If you are a Christian, you will benefit from learning about our enemy. I suggest this book to any and every Christian so that you learn about Satan and his tactics to derail and destroy you. Bounds explains things well and I would encourage looking into the Spirit world, where our true battles lie.
