Claire Lyons is the new girl at Octavian Country Day School, an exclusive private school in Westchester County, New York. But Claire is totally unprepared for the social (and fashion) demands of her new classmates. To make matters worse, Claire's family is living in the guesthouse of one Massie Block, the queen supreme of her new school! And Massie couldn't be less thrilled with the new squatter on her family's estate. Does Claire have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with the "it" girl in her school?

Okay, so I understand why my 7th grade girls love this- it has mean girls, a normal girl seeking revenge, boys, shopping, annoying brothers, and embarrassing parents, but oh my goodness I am glad that I didn't read the entire novel and went for the graphic novel. I probably would have loved it when I was in middle school too, but now it is just... not.
I AM very happy that I read the graphic novel, though, because it will give me enough info to connect with these girls and discuss the characters and such.
Also, I was wondering if anyone noticed how old they looked? More like 17 than 12...
I thought it was just so cool how it played wiht your emotions. Like first I was like, Oh! that freeloading girl, Claire, but then I was like, Man, Massie is being so mean and uptight. And soon I wasn't sure who's side I'm on, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to side with Claire. I just thought it was so cool and creative it was to play with yourr emotions like that. And that's why I give this book five stars!
So I can't really rate this book through my usual breakdown, since this is basically the same novel as The Clique, and it is in fact a manga/graphic novel.
Let's just start by saying that I HATE manga. Graphic novels are NOT my thing under any means. I honestly would say that I feel that graphic novels are a waste of book space at the library (seriously, I'm not trying to be a bitch here). I just really don't like them, although I can somewhat understand why others do. Sorry, but that's just my opinion.
Although, I really wanted to give this one a shot, since it was based off of The Clique. It did not dissappoint. This was actually a good read. I loved the illustrations, and I thought that this book was a cute, light, and definitely fun read. I enjoyed it despite the fact that I don't like graphic whatsoever. This one definitely opened my eyes to it a bit, and I may even be willing to try another graphic novel after this (The Gossip Girl one maybe?).
The book pretty much highlights the main events of the original, keeping it pretty simple. Minimal dialogue, straight to the point.
The illustrations, like I said, were cute and fun. I loved how Bean was illustrated (I thought that was hilarious) as well as the horses, and animals in general.
The characters were kept to their original appearences, and I loved how it all played out.
I would definitely reccommend this book. It may be manga, but if you have enjoyed The Clique, you most likely will enjoy this. If not, I wouldn't say that I would reccommend this. It was a nice, light read, and a good start into the world of manga, although, I'm still not a huge fan. Anywho, worth it!
These girls are extremely spoiled(except Claire). What 13 year olds have prada, Chanel, and Gucci stuff? No 13 year old unless they have been saving for years. Trust me I know I'm in my early teen years and the closest I'm getting to prada now is Aeropostale. Which is fine by me. This book was just all about spoiled little Massie and her spoiler selfish friends too. I just don't get how shallow a person can be.
It’s like the Mean Girls movie except it takes place in middle school instead of high school. It still expresses the cruel reality of cliques though. I still don’t quite understand the psychology of why it’s so easy to betray people for a something “better”. The cycle of human nature is the same but I think we see it differently in adults. I don’t know… I feel like there is more to the story to understand that I still don’t know.
Parts of the transitions in the book wasn’t quite clear but I got the full picture I think. I mean that’s why I took off the .5 stars…
A book filled with rivals, action, and romance." The Clique" is a book about four best friends that are very popular in school the main character had a visitor coming to her house and staying there. She didn't like her to visit because she wasn't popular so she wanted to " ruin " her. Until she met this guy at school... As an example of " ruining " her reputation in school she told her friends about her, and to make her feel miserable. For example during art class she was painting and one of her rivals was painting next to her. She had red paint and poured it all over her backside, the worst part was that she had white pants on and a short t-shirt,which made it look like she...yeah, anyway, everybody in her class was looking at her and were shocked. She didn't know what was going on , she was confused. The teacher (thank god it was a girl) insisted her to go to the nurses office. She didn't know why but she went anyway. While walking through the hallways, everybody were gasping with their mouths wide open. She was little embarrassed even though she didn't know what was going on. When she went to the clinic she finally realized what happened and was so embarrassed and mad... That was my favorite scene in the book because it was funny and weird at the same time. Other than that scene there are way more scenes that were really interesting like how she met that guy... im not going to spoil it so you should read it. I recommend " The Clique: The Manga " By Lisi Harrison. When you read that book you will enjoy its juicy details near the middle to end because that's where all the action takes place.
I couldn't sleep last night and saw this on KU—thought it would be fun to re-visit a childhood favorite.
3.5/5 stars
The illustrations are beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing one of my favorite books of my Jr. High years unfold on the page. The issue was, as many other readers have pointed out, that divorcing this story from Harrison's satirical voice and from the mean girls' insecurities highlighted in the book makes this feel like a cruel story inappropriate for Middle Grade readers.
I came across this one while browsing through Yen Press's collection on Comics Plus and was curious. I read the books (or well a couple) years ago. And boy, I had not forgotten that both Massie and Claire were bitches, just like most of the characters in the book, haha. Yes, I would also say Claire is a bitch, because the things she does are just as bad as Massie's things. But I did like other elements in the book, like the girls making their own company (but they should have checked for that), the fashion, the squeeing over guys, the party, the school looked so cool, and I liked the art.
I read this at the insistance of my daughter and because she said it was a stand-alone book. All I can say is that it was very cliche. Nothing new to the old problem of New Girl in Town vs. Mean, Rich, Popular Girls. The only reason I gave this two stars was because it was fun to read in manga-style. It reminded me of the comic strips I used to read as a child.
Pretty much exactly what happened in the first book. But i absolutely loved the illustrations. They were drawn I'm a Japanese anime way, so they make some funny faces.. I particularly like the way Bean the dog is drawn, he has the same facial expressions as the people do and it's funny.
A simple, quick read. I liked how the story had a lot of twists and turns when it came to who was nice and who was not. The other books should also be published in this style, it was visually pleasing and gave me a good idea of the story.
Why did it change from color to black and white after like 4 pages ?? I want to read this way less now Massie and Dylan ? I think? Look the same in black and white at least so far these are 7th graders these kids are 12 middle schoolers *shakes head* they don’t know how small and stupid they really are their school is called ocd? LOL CLAIRE! DON’T STOOP TO HER LEVEL! i forgot how this book goes (i read the actual book like a year ago? two? idek bro i don’t have it marked as read on goodreads so either i missed it when i was putting books in or i read it before the second half of 2019 anyway) this is painful they’re all so terrible i picked up like half of the series at Salvation Army am i actually going to read them will i really put myself through this it’s not funny it’s just MEAN ahahahahs anyone else read a series forget how it goes cuz it’s been so long read what you already read in graphic novel form and then continue the series in actual books because if i do continue with this series i’ll have at least 2 nickels
I haven't gotten to the original novel version yet, but I happened to give this a spin first. In the same vein as Gossip Girl, this is the fictionalized world of the elite wealthy mean girls. I'm always surprised that I like these stories as much as I do, but I'm a sucker for relatively light-hearted stories involving friendship, toxic or otherwise, with little to no romance.
It's a fish out of water story where we find our "normal" protagonist Claire thrust into the middle of a pack of wealthy mean girls in the world of the elite. It's a fun enough read, though it feels like characters change their behavior too quickly without much reason given to the reader and I would have liked it if Claire had taken the high road more.
My 7th grade nostalgia is screaming right now. I absolutely devoured “The Clique” series in middle school and this manga definitely delivered. Not only did it keep the same elements from the original novel, but the artwork was well done & dialogue was funny. I was able to finish this book extremely fast and wish they made more mangas on this series.
This manga definitely makes you feel all sorts of emotions and it really brought me back to when I was reading the original novel in 7th grade.
5/5, highly recommend & one of my favorite mangas for sure!
Feels weird to rate a manga book (I usually never do lol)
I found this and wanted to reread it for fun 👜
When I found this years ago I was so excited; one of my favorite series as a manga? Ah-mazing!
Many are saying it doesn't get into depth like the book does (I noticed that too) plus the characters look more like they're 17 instead of 12/13 years old.
I still enjoyed it and wish there were more to the manga series!
The Clique is one of the many tween/YA-oriented book series to get a graphic novel adaptation, presumably because of how successful it was for Maximum Ride. Except unlike Maximum Ride as a whole, this is actually really good (I grew up with both, I'm allowed to say it). This and the movie are both great adaptations of what would become the beginning of Lisi Harrison's most iconic book series, and I definitely recommend it if you're looking to fill that niche of 2000s nostalgia.
I had no idea they had a graphic novel version of The Clique omg the way my younger self would have absolutely DEVOURED this entire series in manga form (and still would, let's be real)
It's so similar to the book/movie, this was so nostalgic for me!! I wish the whole series had a manga version LOL
What a throwback! I remember wanting to watch the movie years ago. This was entertaining in that way we love to watch rich people live their lives but there was a toxic aspect shown where peer pressure causes people to be really mean to each other.
Had naur idea they made a graphic novel and sadly found out not a single library in Colorado carries it. A crime. This was almost as enjoyable as the original novel but some of the adaptation felt clunky in transitions and characters
Finished in one day. Basically just a graphic novel adaptation of "The Clique" bt Lisi Harrison. Overall, it was just popular girls being mean and unpopular girl getting revenge. But then she was kind of friends with the mean girls in the end? Would not read again or read the non graphic novel version
if i read this a few years ago i would've loved it. But now, all I can think of is the scrambling plot and the unlikeable, absolutely fake and mean characters. The art was nice, and it was a fun read, but I wouldn't recommend it because of how it tries to romanticize being mean and toxic.
Wasn't half bad. I really liked the art style of this book. I felt like the story lacked a plot but other than that it's a pretty standard mean girl clique story.
this was a favourite movie of mine as a child (and lowkey kinda fun now) when i found out there was a manga it looked cute! just wish the color continued instead of turning black and white.
