Those words set the stage for the entry of Robin Marlette and his team of ex-cops into the world of covert operations and counter-terrorism. After two years of intense training by the best special ops teams in the US military, the CIA and international terror plots propel the team into dangerous and complex missions that threaten the world’s balance of power and tests the team to the ragged edge of their abilities.
Author Mike McNeff continues the saga of the Guardians, first introduced in his novel GOTU and takes the reader on another non-stop thrill ride. You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat as Robin leads his men while they capture international criminals, rescue hostages and fight terrorists all over the globe…with the help of unlikely partners. Mike’s research into the historical background is evident and adds frightening realism to the plot.
If you like to be swept away with tense and exciting action, then buckle up — Necessary Retribution is for you.
With a writing style reminiscent of Tom Clancy, author Mike McNeff creates a story that intrigues and a group of characters the reader can care about.
First, let me say that this is the second in a series. Aside from some references by Robin "Rob" Marlette to "the attack" (which upon some research I discovered apparently happened in the first book when his daughter was kidnapped) I never felt in the least bit lost. This book very ably stands alone.
It's complex and full of details. This is both good and bad... it makes it difficult to get into at the beginning (which also made me think of Clancy ... I have the same problem with his books) because so much information is being presented and we haven't gotten to know the characters enough to care about what happens. I recommend you stick with it, though, because once you do get to know the group of characters involved in The Guardians, you won't want to stop.
I admit, too, that I hadn't realized when I chose to read this book that it's set in the recent past. When the discussion of Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait came up, it had me scratching my head. My husband fought in Desert Storm, so this event is something I'm familiar with. But once I got past that, it was full steam ahead.
I love the group dynamic between the members of this group Robin has organized, as well as the interactions with his family. And, though the action was exciting and interesting, it's this dynamic that kept me reading.
All-in-all, Necessary Retribution was a good book. Despite the difficulty I had engaging with the story at the beginning, I'm glad I read it. It's full of action, great characters and good, complex writing. If you like books by Tom Clancy, this might be a good fit for you.
What can I say? My goodness... I just finished reading this book and I'm sad that I don't get to continue experiencing these character's lives! I love them! I want them to continue growing and doing... Even with the violence of the missions, this is a beautiful family story. Very well balanced action and personal interactions!
"Necessary Retribution" is a completely entertaining spy-mission story from start to finish!!! You want action? - Robin Marlette and his team don't let you down!!! You will want to read "GOTU" before "Necessary Retribution", but you don't have to, to fully enjoy this novel. This story is fully engaging and is a complete story, but I am SOOOOOOOO hoping there is a next book, up, real soon!!!
Politically intriguing, militarily exciting and a family oriented story. The story has ended for me, but the thrill in my mind will always continue!!! This is a wonderful book! I'd recommend it to anyone who wants an adventurous-thrill-ride, while enjoying a fantastic story!!! I wanna know what they do to the boat. I bet it's going to be GREAT!!! :-D The author is quite gifted with ideas of how to do a person in. I find that scary and yet kinda neat! I'm gonna change my dream character to Robin Marlette! He is sexier than Sean Connery!
Necessary Retribution is a book about a series of covert, seal-like missions/rescues. Each is a little more dangerous then the last and which seems to lead to another. Robin who heads this group pulling together mostly ex-cops, men and women, who have the skills and attitude and willing to do the training needed to make them the best elite group out there. The rescues/missions go from working against the enemy to working with the enemy to hunt the man responsible for stealing and selling some.... You have to read it to find out.
I liked how this book started - there was danger and intrigue with action-packed adventures soon to follow. I thought the beginning was really well done, it captured my attention immediately and pulled me in. The missions and rescues are tense, action-packed. Robin is one of the really good guys trying to make everything right for everyone. Unfortunately not all things are within his control. This story is a good read.
I didn't read the first book in this series but had no problems following the story. I was given a copy for an honest review. 3.5/5
McNeff takes "covert operations" to a new level with action real enough to make you the reader want to Google the events to insure you're reading fiction and not fact. Can't wait to see what is going to be next for Robin and the team. Great reading and writing skills.
Liked it. Liked it a lot. Already knew the characters and Mike kept them alive with new adventures and friends for life. Still needs a good proofreader, but all else met all my expectations. Fun read.
