In the depths of a collapsing mine shaft, David Mackenzie lost everything. Even his sight. Determined not to rely on anyone else to get along, David wraps himself tightly in folds of bitterness as dark as his new world.

I absolutely loved this book! David and Karen are engaged to be married but then there is a mining accident, a cave in, and David goes permanently blind. He no longer wants to marry Karen but Karen is determined, along with his family, to still have the marriage take place. David reluctantly agrees in order to not be sued for breach of promise. Karen tries to help him best she can. David is fearful that she will end up leaving him so he keeps her at arms length. But when danger comes they learn to rely on each other and God to get them through. This was just a wonderful story! I loved Karen’s determination to still be so loving and helpful towards her husband. I felt bad for how she was treated at times. But I felt bad for David too, he was so worried she would leave and didn’t want his heart broken. I liked how he finally got help and got back to himself. And of course that they patched things up. The Christian content is very strong in this story! Overall, just a great story and I definitely recommend!

I enjoyed this book so much! Before the Dawn by Erica Vetsch feels so much like Adam and Mary in LHOTP but reversed- he’s blind and breaks off their engagement, similar to how Mary felt after she went blind. I love their story in LHOTP spit was so fun to see a loose sort of base on it here, intentionally or not. The Mackenzie family characters are so amazing! I moved right on to read book two, Light to My Path, with David’s brother and Eldora. I think I loved their story second book even more. Vetsch is certainly one of my favorite authors! Her plots are extremely well written, characters are dynamic, a romance is super sweet and focuses on the friendship rather than kissing all the time LOL. My favorite kind of romance. I also love their story strong faith threads and realistic spiritual battles the characters go through. There’s always something there that is a great reminder or lesson learned! I can’t wait to read Phineas’s story at some point when it releases!
I received e-arc copies of both books from Celebratelit to read a review. All opinions are honest and my own.

Two kinds of darkness shape this story. One is physical; rock and ruin sealing off the light. The other follows David home and settles into his thoughts; guilt tightening its grip, shame pressing inward, pride resisting mercy, and the suspicion that blindness has stripped him of usefulness.

A man who once led crews underground now measures each step across his own living room. A man who once protected others carries the weight of believing he failed them. Blindness confronts what he believes about God, about suffering, about whether purpose remains when strength is gone.

Karen stands steady in that shadow, clear-eyed and resolute. Her lawsuit unsettles people, yet it rises from conviction. She contends for restoration and fights for the man grief has tried to bury.

Faith here carries consequence. These characters pray because they know God reigns and hears. Confession follows because pride fractured what repentance must mend, and kneeling becomes necessary once self-reliance proves hollow.

When Karen prays, “How can a marriage based upon a scheming plot ever be happy? … I am broken, Lord,” she brings her shattered heart before God as it is.

When David pleads, “I need Your forgiveness, and I need Your strength …” that prayer reveals reliance born of surrender. Pride erodes while humility takes root, and dependence upon his Savior deepens.

The darkness underground mirrors what unfolds within them: two people learning to move without sight, trusting the Lord as certainty recedes. Spiritual vision forms as pride loosens and obedience takes shape.

The restoration does not come easily, and that makes it meaningful.

Faith is priceless. Repentance restores. Prayer aligns. A husband and wife bow before the Lord together and guard the covenant He sealed.

If you treasure stories where a husband and wife humble themselves before the Lord and fight for their covenant, you’ll enjoy this.

Before the Dawn by Erica Vetsch is a Christian Historical Romance.

What happens when the person you love is convinced they’re no longer worth loving? This emotionally charged romance dives straight into that question, delivering a story packed with heartbreak, resilience, and a love powerful enough to fight through the deepest darkness.

David Mackenzie once had everything—a respected career as a mining engineer, a promising future, and the woman he loved. But after a tragic cave-in leaves him blind and burdened by guilt over lives lost, he retreats behind walls of shame and fear. Determined to protect Karen from what he believes will be a life of hardship, David tries to end their engagement before she can tie herself to a “broken” man.

Karen refuses to accept that love gives up so easily. Fiercely loyal and wonderfully determined, she takes an unconventional legal route to secure their marriage, setting the stage for a relationship filled with tension, tenderness, and emotional sparks. Her battle isn’t just for David’s heart—it’s for his hope. Watching her challenge his bitterness while still honoring his pain makes for a deeply satisfying emotional journey.

The story truly shines in how it blends intimate romance with gripping suspense. Just when emotions are running highest, a dangerous secret tied to the mine resurfaces, forcing David and Karen underground and into a fight for survival. In the suffocating darkness, their fears come to the surface—and so does the kind of trust that can either rebuild a marriage or shatter it forever.

What makes this novel especially compelling is its rich exploration of identity, pride, and healing. The author doesn’t shy away from hard emotions but handles them with compassion and depth, showing how love isn’t about fixing someone—it’s about standing beside them while they learn to rebuild themselves.

By the final pages, this story delivers both emotional payoff and genuine hope. It’s tender, suspenseful, and deeply moving, reminding readers that sometimes the greatest courage is letting someone love you when you feel least deserving.

⭐ Final Verdict: A heartfelt, page-turning romance full of emotional depth, high stakes, and a love story that proves light can still be found—even in the darkest places

So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out Before the Dawn by Erica Vetsch.

Before the Dawn is a fun historical fiction novel that you’re going to love being along on the journey into the mines. I’m not a fan of the dark. In fact, I have trouble seeing when it’s dark out. I also have trouble seeing without my glasses on for full disclosure. That feeling when you’re not seeing at your best is always a bit of fear mingled with uncertainty isn’t it?

Can you imagine being able to see and then in one accident being thrust into blindness? That’s the story of our books hero David. The shaft of the mine he was in collapsed and from that incident he suffers blindness. He’s determined not to make others suffer and so he breaks off his relationship with his fiance.

But Karen is not going to let him go that easily! She’s ready to fight for their love! I love her determination and resilience. She and their family convince him to go through with the marriage. But he keeps himself distant because he’s protecting himself from what he feels is eventually going to happen, when she leaves him.

But when danger strikes again what will they do? This was a fun historical fiction novel. I loved the characters. It read quickly and I stayed engaged throughout. It’s definitely one I would share with my older teenage daughters.

I’ve loved this Brides of the West series! Each book is a sweet Western romance with a touch of mystery & faith. Before the Dawn kept me up way too late! Erica Vetsch delivers a beautiful second-chance romance with a wounded hero & the compassionate bride who refuses to give up on him.

After a mining accident leaves David Mackenzie blind & burdened with guilt, he tries to call off his wedding—but the telegram is never sent. Karen arrives ready to begin their life together & instead finds an angry, broken man determined to push her away. When he refuses to marry her, she boldly forces his hand—and follows him to the Rocky Mountains to start a marriage neither of them expected.

Karen still loves David, but loving him through bitterness, pride, & pain isn’t easy. As he struggles to regain independence & uncover the truth behind the accident, tragedy threatens to pull them even farther apart.

This story brought back childhood memories of the tv show Little House on the Prairie & Mary losing her sight—the fear, the questions, the ache of it all. Vetsch beautifully captures the emotional & faith struggles of sudden blindness. I so admired Karen’s steadfast love—and her growing strength as she learns not to lose herself in caring for & loving David. The conclusion had me on the edge of my seat as tables are turned & the mystery is unraveled.

Highly recommend this one & the entire series. I received an advanced copy from the publisher but also purchased in Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.

Before the Dawn by Erica Vetsch was a surprisingly endearing story that evoked a range of emotions. The tragic opening pages grip with fierce intensity, the words practically leaping off the page and hooking interest before the opening chapter concludes. The forced marriage trope takes an unexpected turn, exploring its impact on one’s faith. A small mystery, which resolves at the end, is tucked behind the overarching romance and adds intrigue to the story.

My heart ached for Karen while I felt a sense of exasperated compassion towards David. Navigating the jagged pieces of life’s tragic turns, a heartbreaking experience when dreams are shattered, is the very foundation of this romance, filled with subtle layers of spiritually. Plenty of spiritual nudges had me pondering all the things I take for granted in life. Erica Vetsch does a superb job immersing her readers in a foreign world as her characters’ emotional vulnerabilities play out so vividly on the page.

The story was a gem, as I savored the historical context and the spiritual takeaways. The narrative encompassed both the physical trials of disability and the inner battles of overcoming spiritual infirmities. Out of all the great quotes, the one that truly hit home was: “We never realize what we have until it is gone.” This sweet, quick read will surely delight historical romance lovers.

This was a beautiful story that showed what true love between a couple looks like. Especially when the wife is and actually acts like a helpmate to her husband. David and Karen have had a rough go at it. I admired Karen's tenacity to stand up to David and his pity party over his blindness and what she saw as his selfishness. I don't understand when people think they are protecting others like David who wanted to release Karen from their engagement. Why not let the other shine in the role now placed before them.

Karen was tough and learning to be tougher with David, especially threatening to sue her if he wouldn't honor their engagement. I did feel bad for David. As humans when we are hurt, we tend to lash out at those who love us most and want to hide and lick our wounds so to speak. However, like Karen and David's family realize, it really is a form of pride and selfishness. We need one another and Karen proved her worth to David.

There is a bit of mystery, especially revolving around the mine accident. There is also a family history of trauma that showed the other side of not helping one another. All in all, this was a deeply moving and emotional romantic drama of learning to live with what life has thrown at you.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

Karen Worth was to marry David Mackenzie and wondered why he didn’t meet her train in Martin City, Colorado when she arrived to prepare for their wedding. It wasn’t long until she faced the challenge of her life as she discovered her husband-to-be had been in a mining accident and suffered devastating injuries. Karen did not let David's difficulties come between them but David did. Karen adds pressure and David gives up and marries Karen, though he is angry about it and everything else.
The author reveals the struggles each faces in responding to the obstacles which hinder a fulfilling marriage.
David faces self-guilt as he believes he is responsible for a faulty design of the collapsed mine which caused the injuries (including his) and deaths of several men.
With continuous issues at Mackenzie’s mine, his family begins to wonder if something sinister is going on.
David fought a battle with pride believing Karen would not stay with a damaged man. The issue of his pride seemed belabored in the story and then he made a quick change of heart.
David’s character seemed to be overly stubborn in not recognizing Karen’s love was pure and her faithfulness true.
I enjoyed the scene of Karen and David in the mine. This is the talk the two should have had before they married.
I received this book for my honest review.

I read them backwards - 'Light to my Path' first, and then went looking for the book before it, so I could read David's story (which precedes Sam's story). I wish the books had numbers or even a hint that there was more than one in the front... *sigh!*

But this was JUST as good as the second book. And now that I know there's a third...!? Oh, I am SO going to Zeeland to get it, soon!

In this book, David is blinded in a mining cave-in. He feels responsible, as he was doing the engineering and design for the dig, and feels he must have miscalculated. But now that he's sightless, how can he figure out where he went wrong? More, how could he possibly ask his fiancée to live her life out with someone who needs as much help as he does, anymore? He's self-hating on so many levels - over the mine, over his condition, over misperceived loss of his woman... he forgets God is orchestrating everything.

It's a book about patience. Understanding. Forgiveness. Perseverance. Dependence on God. Surrendering pride, and embracing love. It's. Just. AMAZING. And SOOOOO well written. I can't say enough good things about these books!

Before the Dawn is the seventh book in the Brides of the West series by Erica Vetsch. This is a well written story that is easy to read and filled with inspiration. Karen has returned from caring for her aunt to find David, her fiancee has been injured in a mine cave-in and has broken off their engagement. With his mother's help, Karen convinces him to marry her right away. They travel to another home of the families and Karen enrolls him in private training from a school for the blind.

This story is so good. It shows the strength and determination Karen has to shoe her love to David. The story shows the struggle he goes through learning to cope with his blindness as well as the struggle she goes through to continue loving him. The story is so inspirational in that her faith and love are strong enough to get them through this. While he fights the lessons, he does gain knowledge and confidence from them. This helps him when a co-worker comes to him with concerns of the cave-in. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the mine as well.

A beautiful story that illustrates pride, forgiveness and trusting God. The book centers around David and Karen. You can feel the excitement in Karen as she eagerly awaits reuniting with her fiancé. She has no idea that her entire life is about to change. I like how the author gives Karen decisions that could cause heartache. Will she be able to convince David to marry her?

David has been through a tragic accident that has caused him to be blind. He sits in his room feeling sorry for himself and allowing anger to settle in his heart. I can’t imagine what it would be like to suddenly lose your vision. His world is turned upside down and decides that he needs to let Karen go. I did chuckle at how naive he was. Does he have any idea how much Karen loves him? She will not give up so easily.

I had no idea that secrets, deceit and danger were about to enter Karen & David’s lives. The story delivers an adventure with unexpected challenges and faith that deepens when the couple turn to God for direction.

Right from the very first chapter of Before the Dawn I was immersed in the story and wanted the best for Karen and David. The beginning is intense, and what happens next made me want to keep reading. I really felt for Karen after David’s mining accident and how it changed him and could understand both of their views.

Overcoming both physical and spiritual scars, it seems like they won’t end up happy, but the thread of faith and spirit of hope kept me hopeful for an inspirational and satisfying conclusion…and I wasn’t disappointed.

This book is a short and easy read. The characters are interesting, and the late 1800s western setting makes it enjoyable and thoughtful. I liked the focus on faith, trust, and love.

First Line: Karen Worth’s mild impatience gave way to moderate annoyance and finally to outright anxiety as she paced the depot.

This is a reprint of a Heartsong presents novel from 2011 by the same name. Now the book is part of Wild Heart Books’ series Brides of the West as book 7.

It is the first of a series of 4 book set mostly in Colorado starting in 1883, featuring members of the same family. I really liked this book, which features a brilliant mining engineer who loses his sight in a mine cave in, and his fiancee who refuses to accept the fact that he wants to break their engagement. All the emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of a man accepting his blindness are dealt with very sympathetically and realistically.

The only complaint I have about Vetsch’s books is that they end way too abruptly. The main story issues barely get resolved, and that’s it! No epilogue! Thankfully there’s more books in which the characters make brief appearances, but I sure would enjoy some epilogues!

Karen Worth and David Mackenzie are planning on marrying soon, but when Karen returns after an out of town trip, she discovers that there has been a terrible mining accident that leaves David blind. What follows is a difficult time for the couple as they navigate miscommunications and David’s feelings of failure. I admired Karen that she did everything she could to help David adjust to his new normal and never gave up. There is a mystery that involves the mining accident that keeps you wanting to find out what really happened. The faith of Karen and David was evident and I appreciated seeing them lean on God when things got difficult.

“David, blind or not, is what I want, and I’m willing to fight for him. I’m willing to do whatever I can to assure him of my love.”

This is part of the Brides of the West series, which are novellas. I have enjoyed reading these clean romances and can recommend them to readers of all ages.

I was really sucked in to this story of David and Karen. Vetsch does a great job of making you feel things in this story- the good and the bad! I felt so bad for David at the beginning, but at the same time he made me so furious. My disappointment and anger with him didn’t go away either until he lets the Lord change his heart. I was totally team Karen until later in the story when SHE made me mad! All these tumultuous feelings really drove my reading and I kept going late into the night to finish. By the time the action starts late in the story, I was really rooting for them and I just loved how they were able to finally share past hurts and have the conversations they needed to have and to overcome so much together- leaning on each other’s strengths. The mystery was interesting (I love a little suspense in my historical romances!) though I did suspect the culprit early on. Looking forward to Sam’s story in the next book.

This was a story of many emotions ranging from heartbreaking to hopeful, despair to determination and eventually, devotion. When David Mackenzie became blind after a mining accident, he not only lost his sight but his hope for the future and his sense of purpose, pushing everyone away including his fiancée Karen. After his family arranged a way for the two to marry, I felt like I had a front row seat into their emotionally heart wrenching relationship with David pushing Karen away and she determined to prove she still loves him. Add to this marital drama a mystery surrounding happenings at the mine and I found it so hard to put this book down. Rest assured, the couple gets their happily-ever-after but what a path they travel to get there! Beautiful story of forgiveness, hope and starting over.

Before the Dawn is the Brides of the West Book 7 by Erica Vetsch. It begins with the return of Karen from visiting her aunt to news of the family silver mine cave-in blinding her fiancé making this a story that catches and held my attention. David Mackenzie has emotional struggles that he must work through as well as the health changes that he has endured. Of the two characters, for most of the story it is Karen that stays strong in her faith and her actions. I admired her throughout the book. The supporting characters, especially the family, were developed so that their emotions, hopes and concerns were clearly expressed that then led to actions to help.
.
The mystery of the cave-in gave suspense in the story. While I had my suspicions of the guilty party there were still some dangerous twists. A wonderful, sweet ending to this Mackenzie brother’s story. I look forward to the next story in the series.

A beautiful story of coming to terms with life altering events and learning to trust God to lead and yourself to move on instead of wallowing in self pity and expecting the worst. Karen is a strong woman who steps ahead of God and learns that sometimes God says wait. This is a short read but contains so much insight into the characters and deals so well with what repercussions a family faces after an accident. David learns how to face life with courage and faith. A story of faith, family, perseverance, with some suspense thrown in for good measure. I didn’t want it to end as I was very invested in this story. This is book seven in the Brides of the West series and can be read as a stand-alone but why would you want to miss out on all these enjoyable reads.

I always enjoy reading author Erica Vetsch’s books, and I think this is now my favorite of the many books I’ve read from her.

This book has a unique storyline for a Christian historical fiction novel. When David Mackenzie was blinded in a mining accident, he almost immediately broke his engagement to Karen Worth, but Karen was determined that she would convince David that they still had a future together. The author did an excellent job of showing the emotions and struggles they each had as they faced their situation.

Throughout the storyline, there’s a theme of completely trusting God through difficult circumstances. I especially loved the use of Psalm 139 as a source of inspiration for David. There’s some suspense towards the end of the book that lead to a beautiful ending of the story. I’m hoping that we might see these characters in another book in this “Brides of the West” series.

I have enjoyed the first six books from the Brides of the West by Erica Vetsch and was looking forward to reading the seventh installment, Before the Dawn. I was honored to have the opportunity to read it. I adored diving into the story between Karen and David. I thought the two had great chemistry and easy to keep turning the pages. It was a tale that was sweet, delightful, adventurous, and lovable.

I am going to give Before the Dawn five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical romance. I hope to read the eighth installment from the Brides of the West series, Light to my Path, to see what adventure Erica Vetsch has in store for me.

This was a touching story of how David learns to live his life in darkness. The accident that took his sight changed his life completely. Through his trials and hardships he learns to let go of pride, let others help him, and to trust God with the unknown.

Karen has loved David and his blindness doesn’t change that in any way, if only she could get him to realize that. She must learn patience and her steadfast love breaks through his walls. Together they move from darkness to light for the future God has for them.

I looked forward to reading this novel and it didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed it very much. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

Karen travels to meet her future husband, David, a mining engineer. A mine cave in killed eight miners and blinded David. He refuses to marry Karen and isolates himself so he can feel sorry for himself. His family and Karen gets tough and makes him do for himself. David is still pondering what caused the accident and keeps blaming himself. What will happen to their relationship and how will David pull out of his self isolation? What secrets will unfold as they dig deeper into the cave in and the reasons for it? This book pulled out several emotions from me as I continued to read. Sadness, anger, self introspection and admiration. An interesting and quick read.

Exquisitely beautiful and tense. The depth of compassion you feel for Karen and David is deep. I really resonated with Karen when David rejected her after a mine accident blinded him. Quite a journey for the two of them, and the struggles, both mental and physical, keep you riveted till the too short end.

I enjoyed this story. I liked how Karen loved David even when he was being difficult. I liked how she challenged him to not let his blindness define him. I liked how even when things were hard they still loved each other and eventually were able to find a way to be happy together. I also liked how in on of David and Karen’s scariest moments trapped in the mine, David finally turned to the Lord and relied on his strength. I liked how the trials they went through made their relationship stronger.

I enjoyed this story which shows how when something happens that changes your entire future and must have faith and trust in God. David’s life is forever changed and his fears are keeping him from letting Karen in. Karen loves David and is doing her best to help him. Their patience is stretched thin but their love will survive.

The story is interesting and has a mystery to solve. We watch Karen suffer from many things and we see David finally step up and be the man he needs to be.

I recommend this book.

"Before the Dawn" by Erica Vetsch is a romance that isn't always a happy tale. David wants to break off his engagement to Karen because an accident in the mine has left him blind. David's family refuses to let him. I loved the secondary characters as well as Karen and David. This book has many quotes that a reader could apply to their own lives as well if they wanted to apply them. This is a story that clearly shows what love can overcome.

“You are so swamped with fear, you aren’t just blind. You’re emotionally paralyzed.”- Rex

I love Christian fiction marriage of convenience stories. Before the Dawn is an older story of Erica Vetsch’s, set in Colorado in the 1880s. Karen Worth, the young, beautiful fiancée of David MacKenzie returns to her fiancé’s home to an unpleasant surprise. David, a mine engineer, is caught in a deadly explosion. It robs him of his sight and also of his life’s purpose and faith. When his personality and treatment of his family and Karen become unbearable, they take matters into their own hands.

I am proud of the MacKenzie family for their refusal to allow David to sulk his days away in self-pity and hatred. Many measures they put into place are very helpful, if hard for David. But, the final solution may be the death of David and Karen’s forced relationship!

I could easily relate to either main character, David, or Karen. David, with his frustrations, feels like life has stopped and left him at the station. Karen now has full responsibility for David’s care and emotional well-being. I am amazed at Karen’s resourcefulness in her husband’s behalf. I love that she employs Rex to teach her husband. I wanted to thrash David more than once for being such a heel and refusing to try to relearn how to live.

With a few prominent, ringing Scriptures that David and Karen hear at a school presentation, Truth nuggets begin to work their way into the couple’s life- slowly. Of course, there is a great twist just when things begin to improve in the marriage.

My fave secondary character is a tie between two different men. The first is Rex, who is a teacher at the school for the blind in town. He is an amazingly patient, understanding, and yet prodding teacher. The other is Buckley, the family butler. He never seems to pity David, but somehow is a very supportive friend.

I loved the mystery and action that are a part of this marriage of convenience story. I look forward to reading the next book.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own ecopy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“Prayer was the only thing that kept despair at bay.”

“He wanted to pray, to ask for guidance, but he was afraid. Afraid God wouldn’t hear him. Even more afraid the answer would be no.”

“We never realize what we have until it is gone.” - David

“As for losing my independence, isn’t that what God wants most for us as His children? God doesn’t want us to be independent. He wants us to be totally dependent on Him. Without Him, even men with perfect vision are blind.” - Rex

“Then he opened his eyes. Dreams and sight vanished, swallowed by perpetual dark. Reality sat on his chest like a grinning stone gargoyle.”

This is the 7th in the Brides of the West series, but so far it seems to be several smaller series grouped together as one series, so this is the first book set in this location, so it doesn't matter if you've read the previous 6 books. I found the book well written and easy to read. I felt like David's reactions were realistic. I kept wanting to read to see what was going to happen. There was a nice biblical faith thread. I look forward to reading more books by Erica Vetsch.
