Growingold With BC: A Celebration Of Johnny Hart

Rate this book
One of the most beloved comic strips of all time is comprehensively collected here for the first time. Personally hand picked strips from the master himself, Johnny Hart, prior to his death in April 2007. This edition celebrates the prehistoric hilarity which was BC. Each chapter lovingly captures the best strips from each decade of the comic strip from the 1950’s through the 2000’s . This volume features detailed descriptions of the real people Johnny patterned each individual character in the strip after and discussion by Johnny Hart of the strip with foreword by Bobby Hart. Also included are rare never before published concept art drawn by Johnny Hart just prior to the launch of the strip and also a newly drawn cover done by Mr. Hart shortly prior to his death.

John Lewis Hart, also known as Johnny Hart, was an American cartoonist noted as the creator of the comic strip B.C. and co-creator (with Brant Parker) of the strip The Wizard of Id. Hart was recognized with several awards, including five from the National Cartoonists Society, and the Swedish Adamson Award. In his later years, he sparked controversy by incorporating overtly Christian themes and messages into the strips.

A sample of 50 years of "B.C." with comic strips selected from each decade of publication. The book includes a look at the people from Johnny Hart's life who influenced characters in the strip.

It will remind you that while "B.C." wasn't exactly a ground-breaking strip, it still had its moments when it was funny.

I had a ton of the B.C. paperbacks when I was a kid...and I remember some of the strips. There's some quite clever word play here, but not a ton, and it's sort of, um, interesting to see Hart's devolution into different ways of easily/cheaply setting up bad punchlines of old jokes.

And, um, realizing that the women characters had the names "Fat Broad" and "Cute Chick."
