Audie Pippin is a 24-year-old veterinary technician at the animal shelter in Sumter, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. Her carefree life includes friends, marijuana, margaritas, and casual sex--until all of it is jeopardized by her grandmother's failing health.
Beth Hester is a 33-year-old nurse at the long-term care facility where Audie's grandmother is admitted after a serious stroke. She's down to earth and mature, her career and financial investments meticulously planned. Compared to Audie, Beth doesn't know the meaning of fun.

Through Audie's daily visits, they forge a friendship that draws Beth into a celebration of the fun side of life while opening her eyes to innocent, unselfish love.

As Audie surrenders her heart to Beth, she begins to distance herself from the reckless habits of her youth. Just as they're ready to meet in the middle, their future is thrown into doubt by a duty Beth can't ignore. It all comes to a head on the river at Sumter Point.

Sumter point is traditional romance at its best with the nice dose of human kindness and compassion that tends to be missing in many. Sweet romance, great characters (Grammaw is truly memorable) and very satisfying ending.

This is my first read of KG MacGregor and I'd be happy to read more.

"Sumter Point" grew on me the further I read. The first half of the book I found to be blah or rather uneventful. Not a lot happens. However, we do get well introduced to the all of the characters which gives us a payoff later.

I'll admit, despite the slow beginning, I did find myself thinking about the characters when I put the book down for awhile and I enjoyed the second half of the book much more when the leads, Beth and Audie, are able to express their feelings towards each other.

The book gets extra points for having believable drama and a fresh storyline that we don't see too often. Also, neither of the leads are rich or perfect and are really relatable. The romance is slow burn and the couple does communicate. This is an age gap romance (24 vs 32ish, I think) and a party girl vs homebody, opposites attract story.

The vibe of the read is a sweet romance that ends on a feel good note but there's a somber cloud over it due to the illness of the grandmother.

It also takes place in Tennessee which I liked.

I did have a few minor issues with the read...

Namely, what does Beth look like? Her description is "pretty" but is she short, tall, average, blonde, brunette, something else? What color eyes does she have? Is her hair long or short? There was more description when it came to Audie but I have *no* idea what Beth looks like.

Another thing I noted, and this is completely down to personal preference, was that there's a decent amount of dialogue that has no descriptions of physical action, reactions, tone, or feelings and this is something I missed. For example, there might be a long exchange between Beth and Audie that's just straight up dialogue tags but I don't know for certain how either feels, if they've made a face, spoken in a different tone, where they are in the room, that kind of thing. I had to fill in the blanks. This is okay but I think I feel closer to a story when I get the more subtle details.

Also, in case this is a pro or a con, there's a large amount of marijuana smoking in this story. It gets pulled into Audie's character arc.

And finally, the actual formatting of the story was jarring. I think that may have more to do with Scribd's e-reader app but transitions were butted up against each other so I'd be reading about Audie and suddenly realize I was now reading about Beth and vice-versa with no distinction that there's a change in scene.

However, whatever minor gripes, I really fell for the characters and appreciated the unfolding of all of the relationships. I liked the book and would recommend to romance fans.

I rate this in the high 3 stars.

This is the story of Audie, ~24/26, and Beth, 32, who meet through Audie’s grandmother. Beth, you see, is a nurse who works in a nursing home and Audie’s grandmother has recently suffered a stroke bad enough to require a stay in a nursing home. There’s a slight chance the grandmother could get better, but that’s more wishful thinking than anything else.

The two women know of each other before this meeting, but in the normal course of events, neither would likely have run into the other. It’s true that both are lesbians and both live in a small town, but Beth’s the home-body type, the kind who prefers quieter things, while Audie’s the kind who seems to spend every night, not really but close, in night clubs taking drugs, drinking to excess and going home with whichever willing woman catches her eye that night.

I could probably do a better job pinpointing Audie age but it’s something ‘nearish’ what I’ve put down. In addition to any issue that might come up based on the differences in ages, and there are stuff (mainly Beth’s several time comment about being maybe ‘too old’), is the part wherein Audie’s the same age as Beth’s sister – the same sister Beth raised. And when you get into a kind of mother/daughter type situation with someone, and someone else is in the same class/age as that ‘daughter’ . . . well, that complicates things further.

There’s something about Audie’s character I wish to comment on, but I can’t think how to do so. Something about how parts of her character I’ve encountered before, but not all together in one person. A wild party-animal who also has responsibilities that she takes on and fulfills and . . . stuff.

Bah, this, I can tell, is going to be two reviews in a row wherein I’ve very much said nothing and written uninteresting stuff.

Right, forgetaboutit.

I liked Audie and Beth’s intermingling. The slow build up to friendship that morphs into something more. I especially like Beth’s new cat, Black Demon. And that’s all. I should probably cut everything else and just have this one paragraph be the review.

For my Fallback Friday read I chose K.G. MacGregor’s Sumter Point, published 14 years ago.

An opposites attract romance with characters that grow on you after a somewhat slow start. Grandma is certainly memorable. Audie has a lot of maturing to do and I really didn’t see what she and Beth could connect over other than sex, but she gets there in the end. Not the most exciting book, but still a pleasant read.

f/f explicit

Themes: there is a lot of pot smoking in this book (Audie), player, nursing home, failing health, animal shelter, nurse in training

4.4 stars. I enjoyed this one quite a lot. Age gap is one of my favorite topics and it's done well in this case. Chemistry is definitely there between the mains and secondary characters are well developed. The plot is also quite original in the way how characters met and how they kept up contact between them despite their differences. I don't recall reading something similar so bonus points for that. No major complaints really, it's simply a good book.

Wonderful story and well written. Well, if it’s coming from KG MacGregor, I can rest assured that at the minimum, it will be an ok read for me. She is one of those authors that I know I can rely on 🙂

An angst-free read with a really sweet romance between the ever carefree Audie and homebody Beth, who between the 2 of them has close to 10 years age-gap. Great character development in Audie where you get to read her character evolved from being a carefree-don’t-give-a-damn to being a responsible adult and you get to see/read Beth letting her hair down...

A classic love story. Realistic characters and storyline, sweet and slow build love, as it should. A no nonsense book, plain and simple, but romance of high quality. A must for the romantics among us.

My first experience with K.G. MacGregor and certainly not the last. On the basis of this book, I'd like to delve into more of her work.

It began as a sweet and lighthearted romance but somewhere in the middle lost the flow. It could have been better than this with little more smart choices but nonetheless it was a good read but wouldn't revisit again.

I teetered on a 3 or a 4, but the ending shot this to a 4. Some books you pick up and it’s like you were meant to read it. The journey that Audie embarked on to become a better person for the woman she loved is highly relatable when you meet the one. I did feel a bit of a drag through the dialogue and the true climax isn’t until the very end of the novel. Be prepared to be patient. Plus, a nursing home is definitely not a sexy backdrop for a romance novel. In the end, without the weight of Audie’s grief and Beth bringing stability to her life - this book would have been too hollow. Which makes me think that was the point, because why make the story a flirty read when our main protagonist is trying to be anything but surface level.

Audie was a lovable though misguided character - her antics with the group of friends she had was fun. Beth the serious one, with her issues of not being fun enough was nice to see how they both gelled. the one thing i did not like was that with each issue that the individual had they dealt with it by them selves not as a couple. but even that was lovable.
the whole blow up as there much be was also real - i can see that being said with beth and audie. with beth and her bestie - the jealousy is real and KG Macgregor is a wonderful story teller.

Another fabulous book by KG. She has such a talent for character development, and Sumter Point is no exception. Every character is well framed and real…an integral element to shaping the journey they all make. Beth and Audie are both brave and confident in moving forward, and the love and tenderness Audie has for her grandmother is heart filling.
A definite add to my favorites.
