And the plot thickens. At least now I have a better understanding of Murphy & even Jack Seth. I can even understand why they have made some of the decisions they have made & what has shaped them into the men they have become. It makes me sad.

While this installment in the Kiera Hudson series didn't pack quite as much action as I'm used to, though there was still some there along with the blood-gore-suspense & surprises I've become accustomed to. But more than that, this one dug into the emotional side of our favorite crew & it packed quite a punch. It actually kinda hurt.

**Dead Seth Spoilers**
at the end of Dead Seth, we found out that Jack Seth is Kiera's brother & instead of being a Vampyrus/Human half-breed she is actually a Vampyrus/Lycanthrope half-breed. Sargent Jim Murphy (who incidently is her Uncle) knew this the entire time & kept it from her. On top of all that, she feels betrayed by Potters actions & unsure of Jacks revelations. Our poor girl Kiera just cannot catch a break. In this book we get to hear Murphys side of the story & it will break your heart. I have a whole new understanding of the Sarge now, but I'm not entirely sure where we go from here. I'm also more than a little concerned about Kiera & Potter's relationship. Will she listen to him & give him a chance to explain, can she forgive him, but maybe most importantly will his feelings for her change now that he knows what she is?? We all know how he feels about the wolves......

Only time will tell as I anxiously await the final installments of the second Kiera Hudson Series -'Dead Water' due out in early 2013 & than 'Dead End'. I'll be the first to admit I'm suffering many different emotions about it. Excitement, nervousness, fear, sadness & even a little bit of nausea if I'm being honest.

Okay, I'm off to watch The Wizard of OZ now. For some reason 'if I only had a brain' is stuck in my head on a loop. I just keep singing it over & over & over........ ;) xx

I finished this book a few days ago, but it has taken me this time to get over it. I've gone back to many passages to make sure I had understood the whole thing correctly. As usual, Tim O'Rourke has written a great book, full of surprises, unexpected twists and turns and characters who go from one side to the other in the readers' minds. In my case, I fell out of love and back in love with Murphy several times during this book. Potter was a very side character here and I almost missed his presence, but he would probably have been a nuisance. Kiera was completely inspiring, strong and willful as ever. I still can't get over what a wonderful twist this has been. I am desperate for the next book but I know I'll go back to DEAD WOLF and DEAD SETH many times in the meantime. I must say, thank you Tim for providing such an amazing read.

MICHELLE'S REVIEW 15TH DECEMBER 2012:

RATING: 5 MURPHY & POTTER ABS FESTIVAL STARS!!

Murphy is off to a potty mouthed, ten pin bowling start in his very own book.

I looked away, and using the Skin-walker’s head like a cannon ball, I shot it through the air at one of the Skin-walkers who was still attacking Potter. The decapitated head smacked into the face of the unsuspecting Skin-walker and I heard a sickening thud. He fell backwards onto his arse.

Stiiiiiirrriiikkkee!!!

Kayla, bless her, she has this blood thirsty vengeance hiding inside her that peeks out every now and then. Sam is still bobbling about. I keep waiting for Tim to prove Potter right or wrong.

I absolutely LOVE Murphy and Potter. They have this chemistry like no other characters I have come across. I could listen to them going off at each other all day. I have a grin plastered on my face when these two are communicating the only way they know how, with potty mouthed enthusiasm.

“You’d better open your eyes, or I’m going to rip you a new arsehole myself,” I roared down at him.

“I didn’t know you felt like that for me,” Potter suddenly croaked just above a whisper, his eyes closed.

To hear him speak, however juvenile his remark was, made me just want to grip him tight in my arms. Then, looking down at him, I dropped him back into the snow and barked, “Quit laying around in the snow and act your age.”

Potter groaned in pain as he hit the ground. “You took your fucking time.”

“In the future, will you do us all a big favour?”

“What’s that,” Potter winced, still holding his sides.

“If one of these wolves ever tries to sell you a talking parrot, check to see that there isn’t a tape recorder stuffed up its freaking arse!”

Heheheheeeeee...

Jack and Kiera. I can’t help thinking Jack makes a good argument. Before I had even read Murphy’s back story within this story, I could see how Jack needed his only family member to understand him, even if it meant trapping her to tell his story. I know he has done wrong. I get that. But I also see the little boy who didn’t have a chance.

His path was set.

He had been let down too many times.

Tim has a way of playing with my mind with Jack. I just want to erase his past and rewrite it for him. To give the little boy, who cared, a chance.

Potter, you do get yourself into trouble with the female sex. I did feel sorry for you. I’m sticking up for you, but you don’t make it easy.

“Couldn’t you feel her hairy tongue? After all, she had it shoved far enough down the back of your throat.”

Murphy has a closet of skeletons that are rattling about. His back story just had me crushing on him more.

I LOVED soooo much how Tim incorporated the classic, Wizard of Oz into his story line. It was done beautifully. It was one of my favourite scenes in this book, watching the teenage version of Murphy, James, being young and innocent, and also a little dangerous for the friend who meant so much to him.

These two made you forget the danger and distrust that normally exists between Lycanthrope and Vampyrus, the evil that is associated with Lycanthrope. We instead see a beautiful girl and a young boy showing us a possibility. We want it to work out. But will it?

“Sometimes, Potter, you can’t always help who you fall in love with.”

Such innocence.

I really like Pen. We see Jack and how his life was destroyed. His innocence crushed. We watch Murphy tell us about the love that could not be with a twist that is very sad that snuck up on me.

Then we come to those ‘slippers’.

Sentimental, Murphy? Much.

I loved getting a bit of a full circle in this book. Ragged Cove is where we met the Sarge and we see Murphy in Police mode again in Dead Wolf. Memories of Vampire Shift came back to me, where it all started, where I met the pipe smoking, slipper wearing Sergeant Murphy.

Boy, has there been some house cleaning since then. Who knew?

I have another fave scene in this book. It is the polar opposite to singing along to the Wizard of Oz and drinking Inferno Berry juice and sweet innocence. I think anybody who has read this book will not be able to forget the totally brilliant scene that played visually all through our heads. We were singing/rapping the words and we all shot off to youtube and brought up ‘Jump Around’. This was a scene that just worked so well.

Like, wicked!

When I call characters or scenes 3D, this was one of those. I even reread the scene with the music pumping through it.

It just worked. The words were threatening and intense. It would look crazy good on the big screen.

Oh, and those statues...........*face plant*

Tim has us in our comfy reading place for most of this book watching Murphy's back story play out, this is another one of his more emotional reads, rather than action packed. The bastard trio flipped my bitch switch, and the mystery of Kayla and Sam is planted. Will Potter be right? I love the seeds that got spread about in this book. Me thinks we are all rather intrigued to find how they grow.

*Thoughts*

I've now read each and every book in the Kiera Hudson series (both incarnations) and look forward to when Tim wraps up his series in the months ahead. The second installment has been, mostly, an enlightened journey into discovery about each of the secondary characters like Potter, Isidor, and now Murphy.

This is a strange world the characters now live in. It's been pushed so that Lycanthropes are in an uneasy alliance with humans which now, thanks to Kiera and group, has been broken. Yet, we also find out that there may or may not be several different time lines and layers to the world which leaves questions whether or not anyone can truly die for good. We also know that Kiera has some sort of destiny that is still waiting to be played out.

Ever since Kiera and gang were brought back to life, they've been on the run, attacked by the Lycans including Jack Seth, and learned valuable lessons about each of the characters backgrounds. For Kiera, the last year has been a painful one in that she’s been imprisoned, beaten, attacked, hooked on blood, murdered and told she had to choose between races and now she’s paying the price for not making that choice. She’s also learned that she’s not what she thought she was, and now has to determine where that leaves her in the general scheme of things.

Dead Wolf is a surprising addition to this series. It flip flops between Kiera and Murphy, with readers learning pretty much everything there is to know about Sergeant James Murphy, including where he got his comfy slippers from and the fact that he in love with someone that was supposed to be forbidden by the Elders. We also, if we are to believe Jack Seth, get the identity of the mysterious photographer who seems to appear out of nowhere at the most opportune times. It seems only fair that we have a Murphy installment after reading about Jack Seth's story in Dead Seth.

Once again, we get to witness the banter between Potter and Murphy thanks to Kayla, Sam and Murphy’s timely rescue of Potter from the Lycans.

“In the future, will you do us all a big favour?”

“What’s that,” Potter winced, still holding his sides.

“If one of these wolves ever tries to sell you a talking parrot, check to see that there isn’t a tape recorder stuffed up its freaking arse!”

Dead Wolf will make readers understand why Murphy is so protective of Kiera and why his actions, while wrong on so many levels, were the only ones that made any sense. We also get a nice scene in which Vampyre Burton shows Murphy and his love the movie Wizard of Oz. I’m still waiting to see why there are so many CREEPY STATUES following Kiera and gang around and what happened to Kayla and Sam!

This is all about Murphy and we get a little insight into why he's like he is today. I just love the banter between Murphy and Potter it's hilarious and the usual shockers that we have come to expect in Tim's books. We see a different side to Murphy, pre slippers days and we meet Pen, love her she's such a great character. Then not to forget Seth who's always there twisting things up as usual and I just loved The Wizard of Oz theme.

I keep waiting for Mr O'Rourke to disappoint me and write a mediocre book... happily, I'm still waiting! More deep dark secrets, more twist and more action. What's not to like?!

'Dead Wolf (Keira Hudson Series Two, Book 5)' draws the reader in from the very beginning, especially for those of you who have followed this series, as it picks up from where we left off in 'Dead Seth (Keira Hudson Series Two, Book 4)'. However, for those readers that are not familiar with the Keira Hudson series yet, the beginning of this novel is well-explained, easy to follow and provides the background knowledge that is needed to follow the story.

As a fan of the series, I would urge those readers that haven't already done so, to read the entire Keira Hudson series for the stories of each of the characters. This is because they all have their own story to tell in-between the main focus of their adventure and these stories are written from each characters point of view. It is amazing how Tim O'Rourke places himself in the mindset of each of his characters and describes every emotion that they are feeling intensely.

So, 'Dead Wolf' is told mostly from Murphy's point of view. However, it does begin from Keira's, after she has found out a great deal about Jack Seth's history and about herself. Keira is still at a crossroads when it comes to choices and the information she has learned will not make her choice any easier to make, if she makes one at all.

Keira and her friends are in a world that has been 'pushed' from the one that they knew before, there are statues that appear to be sending them signs and, without making a decision, it is highly possible that Keira herself will turn to stone. The only lead they seem to have at the moment between the world they knew and this new 'pushed' version is that of a mystery photographer who has managed somehow to go from one world to the other, leaving photographs for some of them to find.

Meanwhile, Murphy, Kayla and Sam have an ordeal of their own in Chapter 2. This chapter really excited me due to its intensity, passion, action, violence and gore. There are moments where I found myself cringing, but loving every word. I truly feel alive as I visualise every movement as if I am there when reading this series, and this scene was no exception. My heart is racing as I am hoping for a positive outcome. I worry for the characters and long to be of assistance. The reader is completely gripped as the story then moves on.

Shortly after, 'Dead Wolf' becomes Murphy's story, as he narrates his history of family, friends, relationships and his career. Murphy's story throughout is full of emotion. The reader finds out how Murphy became a police officer, how he feels about the Vampyrus and Lycanthrope, who has touched his heart and, on a lighter note, why he wears his beloved slippers! Although Murphy's story is emotionally intense as it is full of sorrow, lies, deceipt, betrayal there are also some lighter moments and I found myself laugh out loud on a few occasions.

The emotional rollercoaster that Murphy has been on does not seem that different in one way than that of Jack Seth's. They have both seen their fair share of deceipt and lies and they have both lost people that are dear to them. They are two sides of the same coin in one way: they have both been through great ordeals, they both care about family, they have both been deceived. However, one is Vampyrus and the other Lycanthrope. They are possible enemies under most circumstances.

Tim O'Rourke always brings something new and fresh to each instalment of the series. 'Dead Wolf' introduces the reader to different characters that have played parts in Murphy's life, such as his mother, Pen, Chloe, Marc, Steve and Annie. We are also made aware of how much Rom, a character from earlier in the series, has supported Murphy and helped him with his career and his ordeal.

It was lovely to read this book as it was snowing out of my window, as was the setting for some scenes in 'Dead Wolf'. This assisted me even moreso (not that it needed to whatsoever) to relate to the scenery in the story. We are taken on a scenic journey as well as an emotional adventure in regard to the scenery, as always with this series, as we go deep in the caves at The Hollows to the forest and the lake.

The end of this novel is written from Keira's point of view, which I feel wraps it up really nicely and brings us back to the here and now with Keira and her friends. The reader has travelled a long journey with Murphy, but then returned to the present situation that the characters are in. Will they find the photographer? Will Keira turn to stone? How are Potter and Keira going to be with each other? Will they all return to the world they once knew as their reality/home?

The next instalment is 'Dead Water (Keira Hudson Series Two, Book 6) which should be out soon! I really cannot wait to see where the characters will go from here, on their next adventure, to try and get their lives back on track.

O’Rourke’s latest Kiera Hudson novel hits the ground running, picking up exactly where book four, Dead Seth, left readers with its unbearable cliffhanger. Once again, we are absorbed into the world of vampyrus and lycanthropes, but this time we follow Murphy’s story as we continue putting together the pieces of O’Rourke’s vast, and amazing, puzzle. Murphy’s story, like all those that came before (Potter’s, Isidor’s, Jacks, Kayla’s, and Kiera’s), is extremely engaging, and I was enamored from the very beginning.

All of the characters we have met in this beloved series have been flawed in some way, shape, or form, and though we hate to admit it, even the characters we love to hate seem less evil once we know what makes them tick. Murphy isn’t evil, by any means, but he is indeed flawed, though I wouldn’t have realized it without this in-depth look into his life. Murphy has been with us from the very beginning—from Vampire Shift, the first book in the Kiera Hudson Series One, and I’ve always liked him. He’s the elder grandfather type, but a hardballer all the same. He’s caring, compassionate, but straightforward and blunt all in the same breath, and he’s always been there for the other characters (except when some unfortunate circumstances took him out of the novels for a little while in the first series, but, you know). And his flaws are what really make him a believable character in the first place. That goes, of course, for all the other wonderful characters O’Rourke has created, and I think that is why I love these novels so much. Even though there are intense paranormal entities within the novel itself, the characters have thoughts and feelings just like you and me, and that makes the novels even more powerful as they unfold.

I can’t say I agree with all the choices that Murphy made in his younger years, just like I’m sure someone scrutinizing my life would say the same, but I definitely understand why Murphy did what he did, and how it all leads to the point where we are now within this fluid story. And, I’m dying to read more! Many questions have been answered, but there is so much more that I want to know; I can’t wait for the next installment! In all honesty, I haven’t met a novel of O’Rourke’s I haven’t loved, and Dead Wolf is another wonderful testament to his sheer writing genius. Seriously, you need to read his work.

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Jack Seth puts in his two cents worth which has the ring of truth to it and Kiera is scrambling to validate his confession. This book is mainly about Murphy's past and gives us an insight into his motivations and the reasons for all the secrets that he has been harboring. Told from both Murphy's and Kiera's POV at times, it establishes the ties that bind them together which go much deeper than I originally thought. Potter has the uncanny knack of being the "naughty boy with his hand in the cookie jar" yet again. Still you can't help but want to forgive him but whether Kiera will is yet another story waiting to be told. I did want to read more about Potter and Kiera's relationship but I am told the next book will address those things and closure is forthcoming. I am still keeping my fingers crossed for their "happily ever after" but who knows as Tim has constantly surprised and challenged me with his story lines to date and while I may not always agree, I do respect his choices and it is always a captivating read though be warned, you may need to walk on the dark side for awhile to embrace this series.

I do sympathize with Kiera as she is such a likable character having survived so much and struggled to retain who she is in light of all the secrets that have been kept from her with the standard excuse being given that it is "always for her own good." It kind of reminds me of all those television police shows that say "Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." Kiera may need to look at getting her friends and loved ones to sign a stat deck in the future for her peace of mind and understandable trust issues. Well done Tim and I am really looking forward to reading the next one in this series.

The only reason I gave this four stars and not 5 is that I must confess I missed reading about Kiera's and Potter's snarky repartee in this book but all good things come to those who wait.

AUTHORS: Take a page or two from Tim. Make your secondary characters as interesting as the main ones, keeps the series from going stale.

Review at Talk Supe

Immediately following the events of Dead Seth we now hear Murphy's side of the story in DEAD WOLF. But before he jumped in to his shared history with Jack Seth and his hand in Kiera's stormy present, Murphy dug deeper and let us in on one pretty intimate piece of his past that not only caused his views about Lycanthropes to sour but his heart to go cold and hard against these creatures. Murphy is sort of a victim of romance and instead of filling his life with happy hearts, Murphy fell in love with a woman who made him lose faith in a lot of things making poor Murphy's heart heavy not with love, but with a lot of guilt, and he spent the rest of his life making up for things that stemmed from this failed relationship.

Did this tragic romantic history help Kiera have a better understanding of what she is and why her life is such? A little bit. But the group still needs clarity on their current situation and the whole story behind their pushed world. I personally fear for Kiera, based on these revelations it seems Kiera's world is not done unraveling. Futhermore I also feel like Kiera's in a box, every event was planned, every place she has been somehow she was influenced or manipulated to being there in order for SOMETHING to happen that eventually led to where she is right now. Aside from the events that transpired in Vampire Hollows, it feels like Kiera doesn't have free will in its purest form.

I'm completely speechless! How do you review a book without spoilers? First off, Jack Seth is a bitter and angry wolf. He took it upon himself to be the way he is, all because he felt betrayed by the hand life dealt him. I understand he was thrown into it as a child by his cruel mother but he should've just sucked it up and moved on. He just had to make Kiera see the truth. And she let him live to prove she's nothing like him, although they share the same blood. Murphy's story however, is quite heart breaking. To live with that on his conscience, had to be stressful. No wonder he turned prematurely gray. I'm really ready to find out what happens next. This was just too good for words!

So many brilliant links and quotes throughout the book. Tim has produce another brilliant book (as always).
I fell in love with the deepness of the feelings and the forbid love that was weaves into the book. Once again Tim has done a job well done.

I always liked Murphy but, after reading Dead Seth I felt angry with him and couldn't believe what he had done. I'm glad he got the chance to have his own story. There is betrayal, sadness, and a whole lot of love in this story.I love the Kiera Hudson series. Every story pulls you in on a emotional adventure. This series is just gutting me! Can I not get through one book without my heart broken? Even if the answers no, I'm going to keep reading!
In this book we get yet another insight into the past but this time its for Murphy. As the others this was incredibly insightful about his past and whats happened to him, how this has shaped him and affected him in the future. We get to know certain things that dig deeper into his past and facts we already know about the rough and gruff Murphy. This series is really bringing they're pasts out to haunt them. The revelation that's brought with this book is something I'm happy and sad about.
These events are really just pushing our group further apart and isolating Kiera into possibly making a decision that she will regret.
The fact that Kiera has to trust Jack Seth is slightly worrying but after knowing his past and how he's connected with kiera, can he truly be trusted? Whats going to happen between Kiera and Potter? Who are these statue people following Kiera and the things she's been shown about the future and where her loved ones are ''supposed'' to be?
So many questions, I guess I'll have to keep reading to find out.

Murphy's stroy

It's clever how everyone ends up connected, got to say I'm not a fan of potters right now, I use to be, but he is so easy lead by the wolves. You would think the mind thing they do wouldn't work on kiera.

I love this series! I found myself so engrossed in the characters and all of the twists and turns in the plot, just when I thought I had it figured out, there would be a new twist on the whole story. I loved the way it kept me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning.I have read both of the Kiera Hudson series and can't wait for the third series to begin.

I've struggled to like the last 2 books in this series. I'm a huge fan and disappointed I couldn't get into the story of Murphy! He's been a brilliant character and I was looking forward to know more about him. I found his story quite dull, hop the next book grabs me like all the others have.

Fast read

Series reads very fast. His writing is both captivating and suspenseful. It takes me a day to read two of his books and I've lost sleep starting the next one. Anyone who likes this type of genre will enjoy these.
