ABBA: The Name of the Game

Rate this book
Not merely a tale of hit records and dubious flares, this biography of Abba reveals a background of infighting, partner swapping, financial disaster, and bitterness. It is also a story of triumph, for though they are not loved by critics, the band enjoyed a revival in the 1990s.

Rootsi sisemajanduse üks tolleaegseid tugevaid elavdajaid, mitmekordne plaatina albumite ja singlite tootja, troonimata diskokuninganna ja mamma mia - Agnetha, Björn, Benny ja Anni-Frid. Kuuluvad kindlasti mind mõjutanud muusika kergemasse spektriotsa.

Kõigi aegade põhjapanevam poplaulutekst oli Gene Vincenti kirjutatud "Be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby, be-bop-a-lula, I don't mean maybe."

Nad eksisid.

No more aces to play.

Nad proovisid B ja B nime all Eurovisioonile saada juba 1972. Siis 1973 Abba nime all projektbändina looga "Ring Ring". Püsivus ja Stigi usk viis sihile legendaarsel 1974. aastal "Waterlooga".

Hardback, 248 pages. Two sections of photos for a total of 16 pages. It also contains discographies for Abba, Benny & Bjorn, Bjorn separately, Benny separately, The Hep Stars, The Hootennany Singers Agnetha separately and Frida separately.

The authors are definitely opinionated. They have a lot to say about various musical legends and not all of it is favorable by any means. They do a good job of showing the considerable difficulties in writing, performing, scheduling and dealing with the physical problems of doing albums and tours, especially. They also show how there are other difficulties for the performers aside from the actual tours themselves.

They do write a good bit about the perceived problems between Agnetha and Frida. Whether the problems were as bad as they say I have no way of knowing for sure. I do think they don't give Frida all the credit she deserves during performances, though. I've seen the DVDs and lots of You Tube videos and I think Frida seems to perform just as lively as Agnetha. My impression is that Agnetha is actually the more shy of the two. Frida actually seems to often really enjoy herself quite a bit and is more lively than Agnetha in some of the songs.

I enjoyed the book, actually. I think the addition of the very complete discographies is a valuable addition.

I can't even finish this. One of the earliest chapters barely even mentions ABBA, and instead seems to focus on slagging off various other groups. There's no linear timeline, which is confusing to say the least. One minute ABBA are in Brighton for Eurovision, the next we find out about Agnetha's earlier solo career, then we're on to how the girls don't like each other, then back to Brighton and doing interviews... I read a lot of books, I'm used to plots flitting back and forth, but this is just silly. How did ABBA form? What events led to that? I still don't know, and I can't face the rambling, opinionated, 'let's see how long we can make this sentence before getting to the point' writing for long enough to find out.

What a very very strange book. It's like if someone's drunk uncle was ranting and raving about how Abba is the best pop group to ever exist. The tone is super casual, with the author going on constant tangents, sometimes having nothing to do with Abba. It's also not told in chronological order. The first chapter is eurovision, then it jumps to the end of their career, then back to the beginning again, then pre-Abba; its all over the place. Very very very bizarre.

This book was written in an entertaining way but there was too much focus on negativity. Based on other things I've read, I am skeptical about some of the revelations especially concerning the relationship between Frida and Agnetha, which the books claims was very bad.

Abba was the best singer group in my time. I always run their song on my Casset player. This biography book kept me reading to find out more about them. Didn't know what they went through nor how the group was formed and how it broke up until reading. This book cover detailed information. Love the picture that was in it. After reading you'd get to know them more.
