John Foppe is a motivational speaker. He also has no arms. What’s Your Excuse? is a combination autobiography/personal philosophy book. He shares the stories from his life which led to the lessons which helped him live a full life focusing more on what he could do, than on what he couldn’t. And while some of what he wrote about was familiar sage advice, there was also sufficient uniquely original—for me anyway—maxims and ideas to make this a book worth reading, and perhaps even rereading.
What I liked best was John’s explanation of the word condition as he applied it to himself. Not caring for handicapped, disabled, crippled, physically-challenged, etc., as terms to describe himself, John pointed out we all have at least one—and likely more than one—‘condition’ which we can use as an excuse or an opportunity.
Mr. Foppe is someone I would very much like to meet. Highly recommended.
June 1, 2018: My sister recommended this to me and considering it is written by a man born without arms who is also a motivational speaker, I figured that was enough reason in itself to read it. Got it for my husband for his bday, in February. Since he still has not had time to get to it, I picked it up. So far so good!
This book fits into many categories of literature. Inspirational, self- help, even memoir. In fact it is all of the above. To not read this book would be a mistake. To readit might be life-changing. You will only know if you read it! so what's your excuse!
