Uniting the world to measure the universe
As a young man, Edmund Halley travelled to St. Helena where he observed a transit of Mercury. At once he realized that if two observers were widely separated in latitude, they would see a transiting planet move along different chords as it traversed the Sun. If each observer timed the transit from beginning to end, the shift in the planet's position — its parallax — could be calculated and used to determine the Earth-Sun distance. Although transits of Mercury are relatively frequent, the planet's parallax is too small to be of any use. However, a transit of Venus is a different matter. But these transits are very rare, they occur in a pattern that generally repeats every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart.
At that time, 18th century astronomers had a map of the solar system, but no idea about the true size. By using Halley's method, they could determine the distance between the Sun and the Earth and therefore map out the true size of the solar system. Venus was they key to unlock this secret. The quest to use a transit of Venus to calculate the Earth-Sun distance became one of the great scientific obsessions of the 18th century.
For the first time in history, scientists needed to coordinate their observations with those from other countries. Nations locked in battle had to work together for the first time in the name of science for the first time ever. In many dozens of locations, many hundreds of astronomers would have to point their telescopes at the sky at exactly the same moment in order to see Venus's progress across the burning disk of the sun and afterwards, share their findings. This was a time that Europe was in war, and the astronomers had to overcome warring armies, pirates, violent storms, tropic diseases and bitter cold. But they were literally prepared to die for science.
This book describes the efforts of those astronomers that were dispatched across the world to observe this rare celestial encounter. The book is divided in two parts, the first one detailing the efforts of various astronomers during the first transit on the 6th of June 1761, and the second part details the transit on 3-4 june 1769. It is a story of perseverance, dissapointment and sometimes just bad luck. Imagine having travelled to the other side of the world, across hurricanes and pirates. French astronomer Guillaume Le Gentil, who never reached his destination due to the Seven Years War and had to observe the first transit from a rolling ship. Determined, he decided to stay in India for the next 8 years in order to observe the second transit, only to be the spectator of a fatal cloud. Disappointed, he decided to head for home, only to discover he had been declared legally dead, his wife had remarried, and all his relatives had "enthusiastically plundered his estate". What a stark contrast with English astronomer Charles Green, who under captain James Cook was sent to tropical Tahiti, where he witnessed the transit in more pleasant circumstances where they celebrated the success by seducing some handsome girls who, as they were delighted to discover, agreed to sleep in their tents.
Both transits of Venus provided scientists with invaluable opportunities to narrow down the distance between the Sun and the Earth to agreeable ranges. It also was the first time that there was a remarkable international collaboration and competition among astronomers. The science of two nations may be at peace, while their politics are at war. It was this "Peace of the scientists" that proved to be of vital significance to the advancement of knowledge.
Wulf skilfully weaves together the historical backdrop, scientific discoveries, and personal narratives of the astronomers who embarked on these daring expeditions. The book effortlessly combines scientific knowledge with human stories, making it accessible and engaging for readers with varied backgrounds.

¿Existen los héroes y las heroínas astronómicas?
Aunque trabajo como astrónomo (teórico) y he divulgado la astronomía por un par de décadas, nunca me había hecho esta pregunta. Es cierto que muchos colegas y entusiastas de la ciencia, admiro a muchos de los grandes hombres y mujeres que ayudaron a construir el gran edificio de la astronomía moderna; pero nunca había pensado en ellos como "héroes" o "heroínas", es decir como personas capaces de realizar actos muy por encima de sus capacidades o de ir más lejos y por más tiempo que ningún otro, para conseguir ampliar nuestro entendimiento del Universo.
Después de leer este increíble relato de (la inigualable) Andrea Wulf, he descubierto mis héroes astronómicos.
Conocí la obra de la Profesora Wulf a través de su reconocido Best Seller la Invención de la Naturaleza (aquí mi reseña), en la que construye una maravillosa biografía moderna de Alexander Von Humboldt y de su influencia duradera en la ciencia. En ese libro quedo en evidencia para mí la dedicación de Wulf para estudiar directamente las fuentes originales (lo que es facilitado por el hecho de que puede leer latín, inglés, francés y alemán), pero también su capacidad para convertir una aburrida relación de hechos históricos en un vibrante relato capaz de mover a un público amplio no interesado necesariamente por la historiografía.
Creo que "En busca de Venus" la profesora repite la hazaña.
El libro aborda una historia menos universal; mas dirigida a un nicho de lectores (el de los profesionales y entusiastas de la astronomía). Por la misma razón creo que no tendrá el mismo efecto de su universal Invención de la Naturaleza. Pero su estilo narrativo (es un ensayo pero se siente de verdad como una novela), además de los hechos y audacias increíbles que describe, hacen de el libro una lectura realmente entretenida (me engancho de principio a fin).
La historia se puede resumir así: en la era anterior a los viajes espaciales y los radares, para saber el verdadero tamaño del Sistema Solar (la distancia en kilómetros entre el Sol y los planetas), la naturaleza solo nos daba dos oportunidades consecutivas cada aproximadamente 2 siglos. Una de esas oportunidades ocurrió casualmente durante la ilustración y el colonialismo europeo, en los años 1761 y 1769. En el verano boreal de ambos años pudieron presenciarse sendos "tránsitos" de Venus sobre el disco solar (o lo que podríamos llamar también eclipses de Venus). La observación simultánea de estos tránsitos y en particular la medida precisa del tiempo en el que los tránsitos "comenzaban" y "terminaban" nos permitió, por primera vez en 4000 años de historia de astronomía determinar con precisión la distancia de la Tierra al Sol. Pero para lograr esta hazaña fue necesario que decenas de atrevidos astrónomos viajaran a lugares remotos del planeta (solo puede lograrse una medida relevante si se registran los tiempos en lugares a distancias de decenas de miles de kilómetros). Este libro es sobre la historia de la preparación y realización, en medio de las más increíbles aventuras e infortunios que se pueda uno imaginar, de estas observaciones.
Jamás creí que lo que hoy enseñamos en las aulas como un dato fácil de mencionar, hay en promedio 150 millones de kilómetros entre la Tierra y el Sol (hoy llamamos a esa medida la unidad astronómica) y la distancia de todos los planetas se mide en función de esa unidad, tuviera una historia humana tan increíble como la que revela la Profesora Wulf en este libro.
¿Y quiénes son entonces mis héroes astronómicos? No se los puedo decir; arruinaría la historia y es mejor que ustedes la descubran personalmente. De una cosa si estoy seguro: vamos a estar de acuerdo en quienes fueron esos personajes que lo sacrificaron casi todo para que los astrónomos del futuro conocieran la medida del cielo.

Wonderful blend of science, history, biography and storytelling.
Lot of names and places to keep track of, especially for listening, but not a big problem.
After all, it was, literally, a global project. I gradually sorted out who was on first, and
the principal players were so vividly drawn that I perked up when favorites returned to the scene,
as if they were old friends returned from a long voyage. Which they were!
I look forward to reading more of Wulf's books.
Robin Sachs was a very good narrator, with a voice easy to settle into. I missed it for a few days afterwards, so much so that I needed to delay starting another audio book.

Andrea Wulf convierte una investigación de archivos históricos y libros académicos en un libro (con todo el rigor histórico) de aventuras. Nunca me había emocionado tanto con la astronomía y la ciencia como leyendo este libro.

Yet again, I turn to my first love--astronomy. And when it's married with history...swoon.
I love astronomical history. It's just fun. And this book possibly earned an extra star simply by being about something ridiculously cool.
Points for when I explained the concept to Gwen she was horribly upset that she didn't get to see it when it happened in 2012.
Basically, the book tells the story of all the astronomers that went roving around the world to measure the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. By doing so at different latitudes and longitudes, they figured out how far everything was from each other. Thankfully, Wulf kept the math to the minimum. She explained it basically by if you hold your thumb out and look with one eye and then look at the thumb with the other eye, by measuring the difference and knowing where your eye balls are (you know that right?) you could figure out how far your thumb was. I'm not sure how it works, as my understanding of math is rather...well...bad.
A lot of astronomers go to weird places to watch Venus and try to figure out how far everything is in the solar system. It also was the start of international scientific cooperation--which is awesome sauce. At times it was slow..."OMIGOD GET TO MANILA ALREADY"...but most of the time it's really interesting thinking of these super-nerdy astronomers going to Siberia by sledge or Tahiti to watch an event lasting 6 hours.
I think I would have liked this better if I had read it, but I'm sure I'll like the sock that I made while listening to it!

Die Autorin beschreibt anschaulich die beteiligten Charaktere und ihre kleinen Geschichten (zB den immer optimistischen und auch immer besonders vom Pech verfolgten Le Gentil), aber auch im Allgemeinen die riesigen Anstrengungen (7-jähriger Krieg, Wildnis, große Entfernungen), um den Transit in den 1760ern global beobachten zu können.

This book was a delight. While being highly informative, it walks you through the experiences of the scientists involved in the expeditions to observe the transit of Venus in 1761 and 1769.
Being intrigued by pre-20th century history of science, this book was perfect for me. It clearly showed the relations between science, geopolitics and the individual scientists. For instance when the impact of the Seven Years War on the transit observations of 1761 and how the scientists benefitted from the existing naval trade routes to the West/East Indies are discussed.
Wulf claims in the epilogue that large scale international cooperation in science originated in the 1760s with the transit observations. Moreover, Wulf argues that the transit expeditions inspired future scientific expeditions such as Darwin's expeditions in the 1830s. From the 1760s onwards, scientists were included in major expeditions such as Napoleon's Egypt expedition in the late 1800s. While I can not confirm whether these claims exaggerate the significance of the Venus observations or not, it certainly was a major event in the history of international science collaboration.

Es 1716 y un viejo Halley —luego de haber usado el método científico para demostrar que los cometas no eran un presagio de la cólera de algún dios, sino fenómenos astronómicos bien predecibles— se encuentra preparando un ensayo que pretende instar a la próxima generación de astrónomos sobre un fenómeno que debía unir a todos los científicos del globo para su estudio. En 1761 y 1769 sucedería uno de los fenómenos astronómicos predecibles más infrecuentes cuando Venus atravesara el disco solar. Según Halley, si se contaba con el suficiente despliegue y rigor en las observaciones, detallar de forma muy metódica este fenómeno ayudaría en uno de los retos más importantes para la época en lo que a astronomía se refiere: calcular la distancia entre la Tierra y el Sol.
Esta es la historia de cómo en el correr de una década, hubo astrónomos que se aventuraron a tierras ignotas con el único propósito de no perderse esta cita que les cambiaría las vidas y que impulsaría a la Ciencia más allá de lo que ellos creían en un principio.
Lo primero que me llamó la atención del libro fue el descubrir lo diferente que era el mundo a comienzos del siglo XVIII. Obviamente no estoy hablando de la distribución de las masas continentales, pues hace tres siglos estaban en la misma posición que hoy; me refiero especialmente a la parte geopolítica del planeta en esa época, lo difícil y casi heroicos que resultaban los viajes así fuera dentro del mismo continente; y sobre todo, al momento dentro de la historia de la Ciencia en el cual nos encontramos: estamos en el siglo de la Ilustración, cuando la Ciencia era venerada por monarcas y gente de a pie por igual y cuando la razón se sobrepuso por encima del mito. Nos encontramos en la época de Halley, de Linneo, de Diderot, de Franklin y de tantos otros hombres que, en muchas ocasiones a costa de su vida, fueron parte del impulso tremendo que supusieron los descubrimientos científicos de la época para la civilización.
La pluma de Andrea tiene encanto, ya me había conquistado con su magnifica La invención de la naturaleza (Taurus, 2017), una biografía de Humboldt que es un tesoro en el sentido más extenso de la palabra. La reseña está aquí por si la quieren leer. Acá se reconocen muchos de los elementos que me tuvieron pegado a las páginas de ese libro en su momento: Andrea es capaz de emocionarte, de enamorarte, de hacerte sentir parte de un viaje y hacerte pensar que no se va a lograr; es capaz de hacerte sentir el frío invierto del círculo polar ártico y el calor del Índico.
Wulf aprovecha las emociones que se despiertan a través de su narración y va contando la historia de algunos de los equipos que hicieron parte de las observaciones de los tránsitos de Venus de 1761 y 1769. Con esto, este libro bien pudiera ser considerado como un libro de aventuras científicas, pues seguimos los pasos que astrónomos de algunos de los lugares más importantes del siglo XVIII siguieron y los retos que debieron afrontar desde la planificación del viaje, la gestión de los recursos, la obtención de los equipos necesarios y demás cosas propias de semejante hazaña —actividades que siguen entorpeciendo y atormentando los proyectos científicos en pleno siglo XXI—. Todo esto lo logra poniendo pronto sobre el mapa a los personajes principales, sus lugares de destino, y las principales vicisitudes de sus viajes. Me pareció increíble como Andrea logra encajar el itinerario de cada uno de los viajes y si bien en alguna parte centra su atención en un grupo en particular, es capaz de contrastar los sucesos de los otros grupos a miles de kilómetros de distancia, todo esto con el fin de darle una visión más amplia a los acontecimientos, cometido que logra de forma espléndida.
De esta forma nos encontramos con un ensayo que se sirve de una muy buena narración que tiene como telón de fondo un acontecimiento astronómico y que nos presenta de una forma maravillosa uno de los conflictos más antiguos en la literatura: el hombre versus la naturaleza. Que un tema de este tipo aparezca en un libro en el que uno pretende encontrarse con un ensayo sobre Ciencia es una muestra de dos cosas. Por un lado, ratifica el hecho de que los descubrimientos científicos que han moldeado nuestra civilización no siempre han sido alcanzados en la comodidad de las casas o laboratorios de los involucrados, y que por el contrario han habido muchos científicos con el espíritu suficiente para abandonar cualquier rastro de comodidad e ir en búsqueda de algo mucho más grande que ellos. Por otro lado, es una muestra de la excelente narradora que es Wulf y de la pasión con la que es capaz de contarla historia de la Ciencia, de una forma que como lo dije más arriba, enamora y engancha de inmediato con lo que te viene a contar.
Algo que me gusta mucho de Wulf es su trabajo de búsqueda de las fuentes primarias. Sus libros están llenos de notas al pie que remiten a diarios de los personajes, a publicaciones de la época o a la fuente más cercana. Esto es una muestra del rigor con el que hace su trabajo y de lo serio que se lo toma. Solo de pensar en todo el tiempo que tuvo que pasar entre tantos archivos aquí y allá me hace darle más valor a la reconstrucción que hace del relato de esta década fascinante para la ciencia.
Hay algo muy curioso de todo lo que cuenta el libro y que en medio de lo que nos toca vivir en la actualidad, llamó mi atención: en el siglo XVIII ya existía cierta desconfianza por la ciencia que venía con sello ruso; lo peor del asunto es que no valieron los esfuerzos que Catalina la grande hizo para potenciar los trabajos científicos de sus súbditos y mostrar a la Rusia zarista como un lugar respetable en cuestiones científicas y como una potencia naciente en este tema. ¿Qué pensaría esta mandataria si en pleno siglo XXI se encontrara con la generación que creció viendo el cine de Hollywood donde por un todo pintan a los rusos como los malos del paseo?
Muchos de los astrónomos que emprendieron el viaje no volvieron a sus hogares o lo hicieron mucho tiempo después, muchos vivieron la frustración al encontrarse con un cielo completamente nublado el día del tránsito, otros experimentaron las dudas sobre lo que sus ojos veían. En serio que leer estas cosas me emocionaba mucho y no miento si les digo que hubo un par de momentos en los que el libro me sacó un par de lágrimas: de emoción y de tristeza; porque la historia tiene ambas.
Con todos los inconvenientes experimentados por los equipos de científicos que se movieron a lo largo y ancho del planeta con ánimo de vivir lo más cerca posible el acontecimiento de sus vidas y teniendo sobre la mesa los resultados obtenidos por ellos —muchas veces obtenidos con las uñas—, el libro deja en claro varios temas que vale la pena mencionar explícitamente: el movimiento que detonó este acontecimiento astronómico labró el camino para que las expediciones científicas multidisciplinarias fueran más frecuentes y tanto las sociedades científicas como los gobernantes se las tomaran en serio y les dieran los fondos suficientes para que se llevaran a cabo. El movimiento que suscitó el fenómeno potencializó el avance de otras técnicas que no solo serían útiles para monitorear el tránsito de Venus, sino para la vida práctica. Solo por citar un ejemplo de esto: Para la época, calcular la longitud de un lugar era una tarea ardua y demasiado imprecisa, de no haberse trabajado en el mejoramiento de los métodos usados para tales fines, todas las observaciones que se hicieron de los tránsitos hubieran sido inútiles o cuando menos anecdóticas. Hoy podemos conocer con una alta precisión la longitud de un lugar con un smartphone, gracias en parte a los científicos del siglo XVIII que trabajaron en el tema.
Ese es el sentido de la Ciencia, el progreso de la civilización humana más allá de cualquier interés en particular. El avance de la Ciencia no es una línea recta que se extiende al infinito, es en realidad un entramado de ires y venires, de logros y desaciertos de todos los humanos que han estado involucrados en su historia y que han permitido poco a poco escalar este monte de conocimiento que empuñamos en la mano. Ellos son parte de los gigantes sobre los cuales vamos hoy a hombros.
Esta es la historia de cómo en el correr de una década, hubo astrónomos que se aventuraron a tierras ignotas con el único propósito de no perderse esta cita que les cambiaría las vidas y que impulsaría a la Ciencia más allá de lo que ellos creían en un principio.
Lo primero que me llamó la atención del libro fue el descubrir lo diferente que era el mundo a comienzos del siglo XVIII. Obviamente no estoy hablando de la distribución de las masas continentales, pues hace tres siglos estaban en la misma posición que hoy; me refiero especialmente a la parte geopolítica del planeta en esa época, lo difícil y casi heroicos que resultaban los viajes así fuera dentro del mismo continente; y sobre todo, al momento dentro de la historia de la Ciencia en el cual nos encontramos: estamos en el siglo de la Ilustración, cuando la Ciencia era venerada por monarcas y gente de a pie por igual y cuando la razón se sobrepuso por encima del mito. Nos encontramos en la época de Halley, de Linneo, de Diderot, de Franklin y de tantos otros hombres que, en muchas ocasiones a costa de su vida, fueron parte del impulso tremendo que supusieron los descubrimientos científicos de la época para la civilización.
La pluma de Andrea tiene encanto, ya me había conquistado con su magnifica La invención de la naturaleza (Taurus, 2017), una biografía de Humboldt que es un tesoro en el sentido más extenso de la palabra. La reseña está aquí por si la quieren leer. Acá se reconocen muchos de los elementos que me tuvieron pegado a las páginas de ese libro en su momento: Andrea es capaz de emocionarte, de enamorarte, de hacerte sentir parte de un viaje y hacerte pensar que no se va a lograr; es capaz de hacerte sentir el frío invierto del círculo polar ártico y el calor del Índico.
Wulf aprovecha las emociones que se despiertan a través de su narración y va contando la historia de algunos de los equipos que hicieron parte de las observaciones de los tránsitos de Venus de 1761 y 1769. Con esto, este libro bien pudiera ser considerado como un libro de aventuras científicas, pues seguimos los pasos que astrónomos de algunos de los lugares más importantes del siglo XVIII siguieron y los retos que debieron afrontar desde la planificación del viaje, la gestión de los recursos, la obtención de los equipos necesarios y demás cosas propias de semejante hazaña —actividades que siguen entorpeciendo y atormentando los proyectos científicos en pleno siglo XXI—. Todo esto lo logra poniendo pronto sobre el mapa a los personajes principales, sus lugares de destino, y las principales vicisitudes de sus viajes. Me pareció increíble como Andrea logra encajar el itinerario de cada uno de los viajes y si bien en alguna parte centra su atención en un grupo en particular, es capaz de contrastar los sucesos de los otros grupos a miles de kilómetros de distancia, todo esto con el fin de darle una visión más amplia a los acontecimientos, cometido que logra de forma espléndida.
De esta forma nos encontramos con un ensayo que se sirve de una muy buena narración que tiene como telón de fondo un acontecimiento astronómico y que nos presenta de una forma maravillosa uno de los conflictos más antiguos en la literatura: el hombre versus la naturaleza. Que un tema de este tipo aparezca en un libro en el que uno pretende encontrarse con un ensayo sobre Ciencia es una muestra de dos cosas. Por un lado, ratifica el hecho de que los descubrimientos científicos que han moldeado nuestra civilización no siempre han sido alcanzados en la comodidad de las casas o laboratorios de los involucrados, y que por el contrario han habido muchos científicos con el espíritu suficiente para abandonar cualquier rastro de comodidad e ir en búsqueda de algo mucho más grande que ellos. Por otro lado, es una muestra de la excelente narradora que es Wulf y de la pasión con la que es capaz de contarla historia de la Ciencia, de una forma que como lo dije más arriba, enamora y engancha de inmediato con lo que te viene a contar.

A few years ago I read a book about the universe where the authors showed themselves watching the transit of venus through some fairly simple telescopes. They mentioned that the event was fairly rare, only twice per century. I didn't realize and they didn't explain what the big deal was all about. It turns out that for astronomers the Transit of Venus is a really big historical deal. About 300 years ago Edmund Halley (yes, the comet guy) realized that by measuring the time it took Venus to pass in front of the Sun from distant spots in the northern and southern hemispheres we could calculate the distance between the Earth and the Sun and to top it all off we could also calculate all the distances from the Sun all the other planets in the solar system (thanks to Kepler).
The book is the story of how the newly international community of scientists cooperated and competed to measure the transit in 1761 and again in 1769. Well told, the book is loaded with stories of compelling characters, harrowing journeys, and visionary scientists and royals racing to measure the transit. The only complaint I had was the author doesn't explain the math. However, she does refer to some websites that take you through the calculations. Overall the book is fantastic! I highly recommend it!

Ist ja das erste der drei Andrea Wulff Bücher. Das zweite. Die Erfindung der Natur über die Humboldt Reisen, ist unschlagbar, gut und klar, fünf Sterne. Durch das dritte - Die frühen Romantiker - wühle ich mich gerade und dieses hier ist im gleichen Stil geschrieben, genau so gut recherchiert und detailreich, verliert sich dann aber doch ein bisschen zu sehr in Einzelheiten und manchmal geht daher der ganz große Bogen etwas verloren - liegt vielleicht auch am Sujet - Venus Transit zur Vermessung des Sonnensystems - heute irgendwie nicht mehr ganz so aktuell spannend wie die Themen der beiden anderen Bücher. Dessen ungeachtet wird man wieder über ein ganz konkretes Thema in eine andere vergangene Welt versetzt. Daher gibt’s nur einen Stern Abzug und sie bleibt meine Lieblingssachbuch-Autorin.

Unterhaltsam geschrieben und hochspannend, was will eins denn mehr von einem Buch, das wohl das erste wissenschaftliche Großprojekt der Neuzeit zusammenfasst?
Ich zumindest war sehr gefesselt, litt sehr mit Le Gentil und fieberte mit den unzähligen Forschern (gendern leider nicht nötig, trotz der honorary mention von Katharina der Großen...), ob der Himmel wohl wolkenlos bleiben würde, wenn Venus sich zeigte.

This is the third book I’ve read by Andrea Wulf and it did not disappoint. She has a magical way of making you feel as passionate about the sciences as the scientists she writes about. She explains the science well, but not so in depth that your head starts spinning. She spins the historical events into a captivating story (and includes some dry humor about our petty ancestors). The historical illustrations make the book complete.

Das Buch hat mir an sich gut gefallen, war aber oft ziemlich langatmig und ich musste mich etwas zwingen, es zu Ende zu lesen. Das mag daran liegen, dass das Thema selbst nicht wirklich in meinem Interessenbereich leigt. Allerdings gab es auch viele Details, die nicht wiklich notwendig gewesen wären und dem Buch etwas Spannung genommen haben.
Trotzdem war das Buch (wie nicht anders von Andrea Wulf zu erwarten) ausgezeichnet recherchiert und die Elemente wurden gut miteinander verbunden.

I had a special interest in reading this book as my great-great grandfather was a member of the 19th century Transit of Venus expedition to measure the transit from Siberia. In my research of his travels, I was impressed by the enormity of such a task in such an age. Yet, his journey was 105 years after the brave astronomers and adventurers covered in this text.
I am a fan of Wulf’s style and appreciate the detailed research coupled with eloquent prose. As opposed to others in the genre, I find she writes with a great level of detail without falling victim to creeping scope or long winded treatises. This was a marvelous read and I enjoyed the mirrored structure of part 1 and part 2 (the two transits). I would highly recommend this book for lovers of science, history, and/or exploration.

It is pages after pages of singing paeans to the great white colonizers, who are out conquering new worlds and submitting them under their will. Quite insidiously, it ascribes motives of science and astronomical discovery to people for whom it was a secondary concern. There is no mention, even in passing, of the experience of natives and what they felt and suffered during this whole colonizing spree. And all of this in 2010s, clearly tells you whom the book aims to please.

Destaco la forma en que Andrea Wulf transforma hechos históricos en libros de aventuras. Sin embargo, por alguna razón, no logré enganchar del todo con esta historia. Puede que las historias de datos astronómicos no me llamen tanto la atención como sí lo hizo las aventuras de Humboldt.

Too short!
Well, I understand that a chronicle is a chronicle and a good essayist is not going to novelize the facts, but I wish I could read more about these scientists who fought against the elements to measure the universe. For the first time in history the scientific community connected all over the world, oblivious of wars and grudges between nations. They managed to build up a competition made of the finest instruments and calculations instead of firearms and claiming of distant lands. They persuaded kings and queens to open their wallets and sponsor expeditions all over the world, adding anthropologists, botanists, geologists etc to the leading astronomers. Even when they failed to see Venus they come home with new knowledge to share with the world. They fell into icing waters and slept with Polynesian women, they met pirates and were accused of doing bad magic, few of them even died in pursuing the passage of Venus. But they never gave up.
Reading about them it's been a travel for me as well, a very good one. After this, Andea Wulf is definitely one of my favourite author.

One of the most delightful historical accounts I have read. The author describes herself a historical designer. In this desription she dose not disappoint. The book recounts the 18th century race, by the scientific societies of the most powerful nations, to observe the transit of Venus between the earth and the sun, allowing them to calculate the dimension of the solar system. This endeavor would change the frontier of science forever. The story spans more than 10 years and illuminates what an intense and life threatening undertaking it was for those involved. Using journals to illustrate the struggles of the brave astronomers, the audience is invited into the 18th century race for science. The book also contains a host of beautiful illustrations and photographs for the maps, people and interments used for these expeditions.

XVIII calcular por primera vez la distancia exacta de la Tierra al Sol.
Requiere una relectura, ya que son muchos los sucesos históricos, lugares y personajes que participaron en esta empresa y, por esto, es fácil perder el hilo.

Fantastic book! If you loved Charles Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, or The Journals of Lewis and Clark, and the like, you will love this. I was unaware of this global scientific endeavor and am happy to know about it. Strangely enough, I got to witness the last transit of Venus across the sun in 2012, after a pretty lucky coincidence of running into an astronomer on a hilltop in Amherst, MA. A friend and I had gone up there to watch the sunset, and as luck would have it the transit was viewable after 6 p.m. The telescope drew me and the astronomer was excited to show me the tiny black dot of Venus's silhouette on the face of the Sun. The last time this was viewable from Earth was in 1882, and now, since the one in 2012, it won't be seen again until 2117! It's bananas.
