God's Sovereign Purpose will focus each reader's attention on the God of Scripture, in whose presence our questions about Scripture are put in proper perspective. Here, with Augustine, we hear Dr. Lloyd-Jones summoning us, before the majestic sovereignty of God, to 'humility, humility, humility'.
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones was strongly opposed to Liberal Christianity, which had become a part of many Christian denominations; he regarded it as aberrant. He disagreed with the broad church approach and encouraged evangelical Christians (particularly Anglicans) to leave their existing denominations. He believed that true Christian fellowship was possible only amongst those who shared common convictions regarding the nature of the faith.
I have been preaching through Romans (for the first time in life). I know of at least one evangelical who after they finished chapter 8 – just jumped to chapter 12 – finding 9,10 and 11 too difficult. But we have stuck with it and amazingly have found it to be a great blessing. Much of that is due to Lloyd Jones’s book on Romans 9 which I have just finished. It is so warm and helpful…..highly recommended. There are far too many quotes to put in a review…but here is one taster…
“We must give people a chance, give them an opportunity. They are blinded by the devil; we must not be in too much of a hurry to be negative and denunciatory. We should put the positive and make it as attractive as we can. We must do everything we can to win people. And the more certain we are that they are wrong, the more we should go out of our way to try to win them to the truth”.
Once again I cannot praise this book series by Martin Lloyd-Jones, an incredible collection of sermons turned into a great commentary on Romans. Lloyd-Jones’ passion and logic are beyond comparison. The twenty-fourth chapter is worth the price of the book by itself, but this book is spectacular! Highest recommendation
I am not sure that I will find many others who have handled Romans chapter 9 in a more faithful way. Thankful for the labor of Martyn Lloyd-Jones in not only this chapter but the whole of Romans.
Lloyd-Jones walks us through one of the most controversial and confusing chapters of the whole Bible with tremendous detail, research and complete explanation so that even I could understand the Word better than ever. A must read for all true Christians, Jews and non-Christians. It we have ever questioned what God means by the word election, by all means read these sermons!!!
I am really enjoying this series. Lots of food for thought, I am impressed at his logical and well thought out arguments. He always interprets scripture with supporting scripture.
