About the author

Hiro Mashima (Jap: 真島ヒロ) is a Japanese manga artist.

He gained success with his first serial Rave, published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1999 to 2005. His best-selling work, Fairy Tail, published in the same magazine from 2006 to 2017, became one of the best-selling manga series with over 72 million copies in print. Mashima began the currently ongoing Edens Zero in 2018.

Fairy Tail won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen manga in 2009, and Mashima was given the Harvey Awards International Spotlight award in 2017 and the Fauve Special Award at the 2018 Angoulême International Comics Festival.

I really love getting character backstories, so this one was right up my alley. We got to see more about Lucy's past and a bunch about Loke's past. I know where the story goes from here since I watched a lot of the anime, so I thought it was awesome to pick out all the things that come back into the story in the future. Loved it.

A volume of two halves, it's part enjoyable, yet clearly filler, arc, part reveal for a long built up dynamic between two members of Fairy Tail. If you're one who gets easily emotionally attached to fictional characters, you may find yourself going from happy to touched in the blink of an eye in this one.

I love a good Fairy Tail fight, but the backstories and develop of the characters is what I’m really here for. And Loke in general.

The battle between the guilds ends but the aftermath is very poorly dealt with. The last part with revelations on Loki is quite ok but Mashima treads a lot of water in between.
Kind of disappointing and shows Mashima's limits and lack of long-term plans.

It's been six months ago, almost to the day, that I read Fairy Tail, volume 8. Then I entirely forgot I had over 40 volumes of it still lying about, unread (well... up to vol. 45 of Fairy Tail proper, then a few extras).

The good news is: I STILL REMEMBER ALL THE CHARACTERS AND THE PLOT (sort of)! Woohoo, go me!

This volume begins with the old master of the Fairy Tail guild using a magic spell which is capable of taking down all enemies in a certain area - while ignoring friends. As this basically makes him into a minor god capable of deus ex machina-ing pretty much any violent conflict, the plot goes on vacation. I assume Hiro Mashima had a 'what now?' moment and decided to change pace.

Then Lucy visits her home for a chapter, which shows a bit of insight into her character, but feels somewhat underused as a plot point.

Then Lucy, Erza, Natsu and Ice Dude (I forgot his name, dammit) go off on a small mission to help out a theater director set up the stage for a play - but since he's terrible at anything theater-related and his actors all left him, the crew are now starring in his silly play. That's a fairly funny part, since wrecking theater like no tomorrow with a terrible play and terrible actors is always good for a laugh.

Then, Lucy gets randomly tackled on the street by sex traffickers, is saved by Loke, discovers Loke's deep, dark secret and then helps him out by using the POWER UP POWERS OF GOODNESS, which means she can randomly do nearly-impossible stuff because she wants to really, really badly and her purpose is pure. Thus, she solves the little conflict there is in this volume through magic and friendship.

The story is enjoyable, but I can't help but wonder where Hiro Mashima will go next - it's all very random and he tends to solve every problem really quickly, so things don't really get a chance to build up well.

Fairy Tail, Vol. 9 (My Kindle Review)

After an unexpected surprise comes for our guild, they manage to build their base back to normal but the drama is far from it. The guild is shocked to find out that Lucy has left to return to her cold hearted father, but only to leave him for good for her real family. After that, they become temporary thespians and Lucy gets involved with saving a guild member who might meet his end and it has to do with once being a celestial spirit. A (100%/Outstanding)

The anime did it better. I remember tearing up at Leo’s almost dying, it being one of my favourite scenes. Lucy dealt with her father pretty quickly, but what a waste of a dress. Up next holiday time.

This is exactly what I needed after the way volume 8 ended. Fairytail law is the coolest power ever! But I digress.... Lucy is the focus of this volume and I absolutely loved it. The side quest was cute but the focus was on the interactions between Lucy and Loke and celestial magic. The strength that Lucy has as a wizard is displayed so well in this volume that even though she’s given a hard time for being the weakest on the team, she is amazing. Her fight for defending her friends is heartwarming and really plays well to her character. On a side note, from what was learned in this volume, it’s going to be interesting to learn more about what happened to Igneel, the fire dragon.

The battle is finally over! Bye bye Phantom Guild, see you never again (well, hopefully). Fairy Tail's master rules! Love seeing Juvia, love seeing the Fairy Tail guild being rebuild, love seeing Lucy going for some adult solutions and was very proud of her, then there is a few quests and a few things going to smithereens. And my favourite part, Loke and his backstory and how far Lucy is going for him and the other celestial spirits. All in all, one kick-ass volume and I cannot wait to read the next~

3.5/5 The first chapter wraps up the Phantom Lord Arc. Then we get a few fun mess around chapters that give our characters a little bit of a break. Finally we get a short sweet few chapters involving Lucy and Loke. That was probably the highlight. Short and moving.

I was impressed so much, Loki and Lucy....!!! I couldn’t guess Loki’s secret so I was so surprised, and I was really satisfied with the conclusion of this story in this volume. I hope that Lucy becomes a great summoner.

This volume was about all things Lucy. There is a lot of back story and a lot of information which makes this volume basically an arc unto itself, although it does finish off a lot of the story of the guild war, which makes it a part of that arc.

In diesem Teil kommt der Kampf mit Phantom Lord zu einem Ende. Mit dem Zauber Fairy Law wird auch Jose besiegt und die Gilde wird neu aufgebaut. Währenddessen geht Lucy zurück zu ihrem Vater und erklärt ihm warum sie weggelaufen ist. Man erfährt so weitere Hintergründe über ihr Leben vor Fairy Tail was echt toll war und auch warum ihr Vater sie auf einmal zurückhaben möchte. Außerdem gibt es Hintergründe zu Laxus und Gajil. Das coolste war das Lucy, Natsu, Gray, Happy und Elsa nun auch offiziell ihr Team gründen. Zwischendurch gab es auch eine lustige Zwischenmission bevor die Hauptstory weiter ging. Richtig toll war es das man in diesem Band auch mehr über Loki und seine Hintergrundgeschichte erfährt. Im Rahmen dieser lernt man auch andere Stellarmagier und Stellargeister kennen und erfährt etwas über die Regeln der Stellargeister. Und wieder werden Nebencharaktere auf einer Seite kurz vorgestellt. Ich mochte Lokis Hintergrundgeschichte sehr gerne. Man merkt auch in diesem Band wieder den Zusammenhalt der Gilde und das die Gilde viel mehr wie eine Familie ist. Vor allem Lucy ist bereit für ihre Gildenmitglieder alles zu opfern. Ich glaube dieser Band ist bisher einer meiner Lieblingsbände der ganzen Mangareihe. Ich freue mich auf den nächsten Band.

4.5 stars, it wasn't perfect but it was fantastic! This volume had the best plot twist ever, I would have never guessed it! Loved getting to know minor characters, like Loke, better and seeing Lucy spread her wings and show more maturity and growth.

I would say read it just for this guy!
