Asterix 05: Die goldene Sichel
Alljährlich findet im Karnutenwald das große Treffen der Druiden statt. Miraculix ist allerdings schlecht vorbereitet: Kurz zuvor zerbricht seine goldene Sichel. Misteln entfalten allerdings nur dann ihre Zauberkraft, wenn sie mit einer goldenen Sichel geschnitten wurden. Also muss eine neue her. I came across the first book in this series Asterix the Gaul on “Guardians 1000 books to read before you die” list, liked it enough to give this, the second book a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, not just of the writing but also the graphic drawings. Goscinny wrote the first book around 1960, and even though he died in 1977, the series continues with the 37th edition published in 2017.

لقد ضحكت كثيراً أمام تلك المعارك الصغيرة التى التقيتها هنا...كنت احاول الاختباء لكي لا يقع على رأسي احد المصابين ، لقد كانوا يُلقى بهم من هنا وهناك....😄
واخيراً لابد من إعادة النظر بقراءة مثل تلك المغامرات في العمل...الجميع يظن بأنني فقدت عقلي 🤪

Het gouden snoeimes van de druïde is gebroken. Hij heeft dus een nieuw nodig om de planten te snijden voor in de magische drank, en ook om naar de bijeenkomst van de druïden te gaan die binnenkort plaats vindt. Maar goede gouden snoeimessen zijn alleen in Lutetia te koop, bij Amerix, de neef van Obelix.
Asterix en Obelix zullen de gevaarlijke reis ondernemen. In Lutetia aangekomen, blijkt Amerix spoorloos, en is er een bende zwendelaars actief die gouden snoeimessen aan woekerprijzen verkoopt. Asterix en Obelix gaan op zoek naar Amerix en willen ook de bende oprollen. Dit alles loopt echter niet van een leien dakje.
Heel goed en interessant verhaal.

Das volle Vergnügen an den Asterix-Bänden erhält man vermutlich nur in der französischen Originalversion, insbesondere, wenn es um die Sprechweise, Dialekte und Namen geht. Zumindest die lateinischen Namen haben auch für Deutsche ihren Schmunzeleffekt, so der Fremdenführer „Metrobus“ oder der Präfekt „Gracchus Überdrus“. Die Prügelszenen, die mich als Kind begeisterten, haben ihren Reiz verloren. Schön sind dagegen die kleinen Szenen, wir der römische Jugendliche, der einen Strafzettel für Raserei mit seiner Biga verpasst bekommt oder Asterix sich über die neumodischen Bauten (Aquädukt) der Römer lustig macht – kommen da nur mir Erinnerungen an das „Leben des Brian“? Aber was wäre Asterix ohne die Zeichnungen? Während die meisten Figuren der Phantasie Uderzos entsprungen sind, kam mir der Präfekt irgendwie bekannt vor:

The second book of the series, this is the first one in which Asterix and Obelix have an adventure together.
Getafix breaks his golden sickle just before the annual druid's conference. Asterix and Obelix offer to go to Lutetia to buy him another one so that he could cut the mistletoe properly for his potions. Once they reach Lutetia (Paris), they discover a gang of sickle smugglers operating a black market. Mayhem ensues as our intrepid Gauls take on bandits, wolves, Romans and black-marketeers.
Favourite joke: "Amphora-neck" in Lutetia (referring to traffic bottlenecks). And there wasn't long to wait for Cacofonix to be tied up at the feast at the end! It's already happening in the second book.

I mean what can I say except that it's nostalgia? My dad loved these comics so my mum would encourage us all to watch the films when they were on. It's the kid in me that loves these (the broken one that can't believe her parents will get divorced some day so she will life the weirdest family dynamic for the rest of her life.).

Asterix busts open a sickle smuggling racket

Well, it turns out that the second Asterix book is actually really entertaining. It is a little difficult to compare them to Tintin though, especially since the first Tintin books appeared in the 1930s while it was not until the 1960s that the Asterix books began to appear. However, while it took a few albums for Herge to begin to set Tintin on the path that he was going to go, it appears that Asterix reached that position pretty quickly. However, and I will have to revisit this statement a bit later when I have read a lot more of them, the Asterix books seem to become a little ho-hum down the track.
Anyway, this story involves Getafix breaking his golden sickle, and he needs it not only to make the magic potion, but to also go to the Druid's conference in the forest of Carnutes. Therefore Asterix and Obelix set out to travel to Lutetia (Ancient Paris) to attempt to get a new sickle. However, when they get there they discover that Obelix's cousin, Metalurgix the sickle maker, has gone missing and nobody wants to talk to them about it.
We begin to see the subtle humour that is being drawn into these comics, where they begin to treat the Roman civilisation as akin to our own, with all of the bureaucracy and the infrastructure that we see around us. One scene has them walking past an aqueduct that is being built, and them commenting about all of the eyesores that are being put up. Then there is the Roman road they travel along with the slaves repairing the road and thus a slow sign being put up, and the chariot driver who speeds past and then is later pulled over by a Roman soldier and given a fine.
This was a lot better than the first one, probably because all of the introductions had been completed and it was time to send Asterix and Obelix on an adventure. However, this adventure has lots of little twists in it as they try to bust open a sickle smuggling racket, who's leadership goes right up to the top in Lutetia. Obviously we also see Obelix with his addiction to wild boar, though I note that Dogmatix, Obelix's dog, doesn't appear in these early albums (despite a write up at the front for him).
I guess I did really enjoy this one, especially since it seems to be a lot more over the top than Tintin. Tintin is comical but more of an adventure story, however while Asterix has its fair share of adventure, it is a lot more comical, and even to an extent farcical. It has been suggested that the writers are using Roman Gaul as a way to make critical comment on our society, however I am not convinced that there is necessarily a much social criticism in these albums as there was in Tintin. However, as I begin to read more of them, we will come to see whether or not that is the case.

Asterix and Obelix travel to Lutetia (Paris) to buy a new golden sickle for the village Druid, Getafix. There are the usual trials and tribulatlons, clever jokes and slapstick comedy. My favourite character names are the villains Clovogarlix and Navishtrix, and the Roman Prefect Surplus Dairiprodus. On the way back to their village, the heroic duo sing I Love Lutetia in the Springtime. Great stuff!

Es ist kurz vor dem Jahrestreffen der gallischen Druiden im Karnutenwald, als Miraculix seine goldene Sichel kaputt geht – ärgerlich, da sich ohne die besondere Sichel keine magischen Tränke brauen lassen. Deshalb machen sich Asterix und Obelix auf nach Lutetia, um bei Talentix, einem entfernten Verwandten von Obelix, eine neue Sichel zu kaufen.

Als sie dort jedoch ankommen, ist Talentix nicht aufzufinden. Die meisten Lutetianer sind auch nicht bereit, ihnen zu helfen. Irgendwas scheint hier nicht zu stimmen…
Die zwei Gallier machen sich also auf die Suche nach Talentix und kommen dabei einer Bande von Sichelschiebern auf die Spur.

Hm. Mal wieder ein absoluter Ursprungsasterix, in der Originalveröffentlichungshistorie Band 2 meines Wissens. Die Figuren sind noch nicht so gezeichnet, wie sie später immer aussehen, das Dorf sieht noch anders aus, die Farbgebung passt nicht, was mich irgendwie gestört hat.
Auch die Story war nur so mittelgut in meinen Augen. Paar gute Ideen waren dabei, zum Beispiel der römische Präfekt von Lutetia:
Außerdem fand ich es schön, dass die Reise nach Lutetia mehrere Tage dauert. In späteren Bänden hat man das Gefühl, dass die da so mirnixdirnix hinlaufen können.
Naja. War okay, aber gibt bessere Bände.

The second Asterix book. Reread.
Possibly not quite as funny as Asterix The Gaul, but a much more expansive story-line and improved art. Also debuts Obelix as a main character (in the previous book he was, like the rest of the cast, relegated to the periphery).
I should mention that my reviews could possibly be coloured by nostalgia; I’ve always loved these stories.
In this instalment we visit Lutetia (Paris) where Asterix needs to obtain a golden sickle for the druid Getafix. Why a golden sickle, specifically? Because mistletoe does not have magical properties unless a golden sickle is used in the cutting. Side note: the cutting of mistletoe was quite a big thing in Ancient Druidry and Celtic Religion. It’s true (or so they say, and to paraphrase Bill Bailey, “who are they? The Wizards”). In some instances the mistletoe wasn’t allowed to touch the ground upon falling, and a golden sickle was actually used. In other instances, it went hand-in-hand with the sacrificing of bulls, which is thankfully not depicted in the Asterix books.
Anyway, after that detour, back to the story. It obviously isn’t going to be a simple thing to pop over to the city for some sickle shopping, since there are 46-pages pages to fill with delightful art, adventure and satire. As it turns out, because of the high demand of golden sickles (druid competitions and all that) Lutetian underworld crooks (precursors to the French Mob?) have clamped down on the sickle trade, and sickles can only be obtained at cutthroat prices. More to the point: they have kidnapped Metallurgix, who is not only the best of the sicklesmiths but also a relative of Obelix. This is not to our heroes’ liking, and they determine to set things straight.
Great fun! And great sound effects!

Kaum sind wir im zweiten Band, Die Goldene Sichel, angelangt, [1] so werden wir auch Zeuge, wie einer der berühmtesten running gags in die Asterix-Serie Einzug hält – nämlich Obelix‘ nonchalante Weise, Türen aller Art mit Leichtigkeit zu öffnen. Eine wirklich nützliche Gabe, wenn man wiederholt von den Römern eingekerkert wird.
Das Abenteuer beginnt damit, daß Miraculix versehentlich seine goldene Sichel zerbricht, die jedoch benötigt wird, um beim Mistelschneiden die Zauberkraft dieses Gewächses zu bewahren. Da Miraculix demnächst zu einem Druidentreffen in den Karnutenwald muß, braucht es schnell eine neue goldene Sichel, und jeder weiß doch, daß man eine solche nur bei Talentix in Lutetia kaufen kann, wenn man auf Qualität Wert legt. Lutetia aber ist weit entfernt, und der Weg ist voller Gefahren, so daß niemand anderes als Asterix ausgeschickt werden kann. Diesmal jedoch begleitet ihn Obelix, denn Talentix ist ein Cousin von ihm, der einzige, wie er sagt, der es in seiner Familie zu etwas gebracht hat. So stellt er sich denn, mit einem Hinkelstein – kleine Geschenke erhalten die Freundschaft – auf dem Rücken, Asterix bei diesem Unterfangen an die Seite, das jedoch schwieriger wird als erwartet, denn am Zielort angekommen, müssen die beiden Freunde erfahren, daß Talentix spurlos verschwunden ist.
Die Geschichte selbst hat auf mich nicht die gleiche Sogkraft ausgeübt wie die des ersten Bandes, doch gleichwohl kann auch der zweite Band mit einigen Pfunden wuchern. Da sind zum einen die netten Anspielungen auf die Veränderungen, die die Zeiten so mit sich bringen. Asterix scheint ein kerniger Konservativer zu sein, denn, an einem römischen Aquädukt vorbeikommend, beklagt er sich darüber, wie die Römer mit ihren Bauwerken die naturwüchsige Umgebung Galliens verschandeln, und auch die Großstadt Lutetia raubt ihm nicht ob ihrer Schönheit und ihren Möglichkeiten den Atem, sondern wegen des dicht an dicht gedrängten Aufkommens von Ochsenkarren. Wir sehen antike Straßenbauarbeiten mit den unvermeidlichen Staus sowie rücksichtslose Raser auf der Hauptstraße, die von einer Verkehrskontrolle rechts herangewinkt werden, und über all dies kann unser Asterix nur den Kopf schütteln. Auch die hohen Wildschweinpreise in der Metropole erregen den Groll des Obelix, vermindern aber nicht seinen Hunger. Eine unerwartete Überraschung bieten überdies die Züge des Präfekten Gracchus Überdrus (welch ein Name der Übersetzerin Gudrun Penndorf hier eingefallen ist!), der vor Langerweile fast den Verstand verliert und dennoch absolute Ruhe in seiner Umgebung wünscht, denn dieser römische Amtsträger hat eine auffallende Ähnlichkeit mit dem großen Schauspieler Charles Laughton, der eine tragende Rolle in dem Sandalenfilm Spartacus spielte. Die Fülle solcher Anspielungen dürfte sich aber leider wohl nur jemandem erschließen, der tiefer in der frankophonen Kultur steckt als ich. Doch auch ohne reichhaltige französische Kulturkenntnis konnte ich diesem Band mindestens ebenso viel abgewinnen wie der zwölfjährige Tristram, der sich die Abenteuer des Asterix seinerzeit aus der Stadtbibliothek auslieh und verschlang. Wohl bekomm’s!

Recuerdo con mucho cariño este ejemplar. Uno de los únicos que había en casa de esta saga.
Incluso antes de aprender a leer ya me encantaba observar sus dibujos coloridos e intentar dilucidar la aventura de estos personajes sin la ayuda de las palabras.

I grew up reading Asterix and Obelix's adventures - the few volumes I could get, that is. If there's one thing I've always regretted about growing up in a mostly Hungarian town, it's that no Romanian bookshop could survive for long (and I don't speak Hungarian). So I bought the books I could while they were available... if I had money. Or, at other times, people bought me books and made me happy.
Asterix and Obelix were probably my favorites, even above Donald Duck. I loved the puns, even if I didn't get all of them, I loved the characters, the stories, the world, the details. I'll probably never be able to reread the comics without nostalgia glasses on.
In this particular volume, the druid breaks his golden sickle and it's up to Asterix and Obelix to go to Lutetia (ancient Paris) and get a replacement - but of course, things aren't quite that simple. The sickle-maker has vanished, and there's something fishy going on. Will punny names let us readers know who the bad guys are? Will Asterix and Obelix fix it with a bit of sleuthing and a few fist fights? Will the Romans be exasperated by the two Gauls? To all of those, the answer is "yes".

This is one of my favourite Asterix books.
Asterix and the Golden Sickle was first published in French in 1962 and in English in 1975.
Asterix and Obelix journey to Lutetia (Ancient Paris) to buy a desperately needed Golden Sickle for the Druid Getafix.
On the way there they easily deal with the mobs of bandits that attack them on the road , and also cannot find lodgings at Sundinium (Ancient Le Mans )
because they are there during the great-Ox-Cart race -The Sundinium 24 hours.
When they get to Lutetia they find that finding a sickle will not be so easy and that Obelix's cousin , the great sickle maker Metallurgix is missing .
To get to the bottom of this they must battle against the Lutetia underworld as well as the Roman authorities (and make a journey through the forest that will later become the Bois de Boulogne).
I wont spoil the ending but we all know that every Asterix adventure ends with a feat under the starry sky to welcome our heroes back to the village.

Getafix's golden sickle is broken, without which he cannot get the ingredients to brew the potion of Invincibility. So Asterix & Obelisk go to Lutetia to meet the blacksmith Metallurgix (of course he is!) to get a replacement.
But what awaits them in the big city is an underground crime ring monopolizing all the golden sickles in the market, and keeping Metallurgix captive. Will our heroes find the blacksmith, will they thwart the nefarious schemes of the criminals, will they get back safe, on this week of As-te-rix.
But seriously, what is with the world building in this series. It's all tongue in cheek, 'romanized' (get it) satirized versions of the present day; Be is reckless chariot drivers on the slippery cobblestone roads, or 'Ampoule' necks caused by high traffic, or Asterix sneering at the 'modern' Roman constructions of the new generation. Something quaint and jesting about the whole thing.
As one would expect from an Asterix series, this week's winners for the most pun filled names are the Blacksmith Metallurgix & Clovogarlix a smuggler from the Golden sickle ring.

Bellissimo! C'è grande attenzione alla storia, è divertentissimo, i disegni sono come al solito stupendi e anche la trama è originale. Che cosa si può volere di più? 5 stelle.

Συνέχισα με το "Χρυσό Δρεπάνι". Σαφώς πιο κατασταλαγμένη ιστορία. Ξεφεύγει από το στειρωμένο "πάμε εκεί, κάνουμε αυτό, πάμε αλλού, κάνουμε εκείνο, αυτός είναι ο τάδε, αυτός είναι ο δείνα" και παρόλο που η ιστορία εξακολουθεί να είναι γραμμική τα πήγαινε-έλα μέσα και έξω από την Λουτετία καθώς και το μοτίβο της σύλληψης και απελευθέρωσης από τους ρωμαίους που επαναλαμβάνεται 3 φορές την ανανεώνουν. Η ιστορία είναι πιο πλούσια από το "Αστερίξ ο Γαλάτης", ενώ η αφήγηση είναι ανάληψη αποστολής στο γαλατικό χωριό - ταξίδι προς το μέρος της περιπέτειας - επιστροφή στο γαλατικό χωρίο, κάτι που θα δούμε στις περισσότερες περιπέτειες που ακολουθούν αν θυμάμαι καλά.
Πολλές οι αναφορές, αυτές που αναγνώρισα πριν διαβάσω το άρθρο ήταν το 24 Le Mans, το λασπόνερο του Σηκουάνα που είχα την τύχη να δω από κοντά και η σπόντα με την γέφυρα. Σίγουρα θα ήταν πιο έντονη η εμπειρία για τους Γάλλους και τα Γαλλάκια της εποχής που τα διάβαζαν και ταυτόχρονα ζούσαν πολλά από αυτά στην πραγματικότητα, πέρα από τα καθολικά προβλήματα που υπήρχαν/χουν σε κάθε μεγαλούπολη.
Ο Αστερίξ σχεδόν καταστάλαξε σε αυτό που θα είναι από δω και πέρα, το ίδιο και ο Πανοραμίξ. Ο Οβελίξ έγινε από κομπάρ��ος πρωταγωνιστής και ακολούθησε τον Αστερίξ στην περιπέτεια και η μεταξύ τους χημεία τον τοποθετεί μόνιμα εκεί ενώ σχεδιαστικά ακόμα δεν έχει έρθει στον χοντρούλη αγαθιάρη με τα μεγάλα μάγουλα και την στρογγυλή μύτη.Το σενάριο σαν σενάριο είναι απλό και διασκεδαστικό, όσο απλή μπορεί κάποιος του 2017 να πει μια ιστορία χιουμοριστικού κόμικ του 1961 βέβαια. :) Την ευχαριστήθηκα και μια τακτική που θα υιοθετήσω από εδώ και πέρα είναι να κρατάω μια ατάκα από κάθε τεύχος, αυτή που με έκανε να γελάσω περισσότερο:
"Μήπως περνιέσαι για Μπεν Χουρ;". Το "σιγά ρε σουμάχερ" των ρωμαϊκών χρόνων. (Σελ. 11 σε καρέ σχετικό με το μποτιλιάρισμα των βοϊδάμαξων).

What's the worst that cab happen? The Druid breaking his sickle.. Anything else that comes after is a piece of cake. Even if it involves Barbarians, traffickers, Black market, Romans or even the horrible traffic in Rome.

The second of Asterix's adventures! Asterix and Obelix go to Lutetia to try and get a new gold sickle for their Druid... And they get into trouble with Romans and barbarians and a lot of gold sickle traffickers!

The Asterix & Obelix series absolutely holds up 20+ years after I first read them! Still give me the warm fuzzies.

(PT) Quando o druida Panoramix aparece na aldeia com a sua foice quebrada, Astrix e Obelix tem de ir a Lutécia - a atual Paris - para comprar uma foice do melhor fabricante, Assetix, descobre não só que é primo de Obelix, como ele partiu do seu local de trabalho bem apressado. No final, acabam por tropeçar num esquema bem mais sinistro que inicialmente pensavam...
Segunda obra da série, "A Foice de Ouro" expande o universo para fora das florestas da Armórica. Aqui, existe uma história, e a ação é mais entretida que na anterior, embora longe do puro "nonsense" de "Asterix entre os Godos", a primeira incursão fora da Gália, e que será a obra seguinte. Agora que se lê isto tudo de seguida, pode-se ver a existência de uma espécie de plano: primeiro, a apresentação das personagens, depois as aventuras, e por fim, o moldar das personagens e das situações em que todos acabaremos por conhecer (por exemplo, o bardo ainda é enxotado, mas no final, já se mostra ele amarrado na cena do banquete, que ainda não é mostrado).
Em suma, estes primeiros álbuns, agora vistos de fora retrospetiva, mostram o início das personagens e das aventuras, mostrando que foi um trabalho de maratona, procurando pelas formulas de sucesso de ambos os criadores.

Sinceramente, hoy he tenido un día complicado y voy a publicar esta reseña para no fallar en mi reto personal de #reseñoviembre, así que nada, esto es para cumplir el trámite y mañana será otro día.
Pues eso, que este es el segundo álbum de Asterix, es ese en el que a Panoramix se le rompe la hoz de oro que usa para cortar las hierbas y necesita una nueva para participar en la asamblea de druidas que se celebra en el bosque de los cornutes, por lo que envía a Asterix y Obelix a comprarle una a Amerix, el primo de obelix, a Lutecia, allí se encuentran que Amerix ha sido secuestrado y hay un mercado negro de hoces de oro a precios abusivos...
No es el mejor álbum de Asterix, pero es un álbum de Asterix de Goscinny y Uderzo, y eso por sí solo es como mínimo tres estrellas para mi, con un par de risas, un par de mamporros y un par de cenas a base de javalíes da para llegar a las cuatro estrellas.

O druid Getafix έχει μεγάλο πρόβλημα. Έχει σπάσει το χρυσό δρεπάνι του και δεν μπορεί να μαζέψει γκι για τα φίλτρα του. Πρόκειται να πάει στο ετήσιο συνέδριο των Γαλατικών Δρυιδών. Ο Αστερίξ και ο φίλος του Οβελίξ προσφέρονται εθελοντικά να ταξιδέψουν στη Λουτέτια (σημερινό Παρίσι) για να αγοράσουν ένα νέο δρεπάνι από τον διάσημο τεχνίτη Metallurgix. Το ταξίδι είναι γεμάτο κινδύνους (λύκοι, ληστές, Ρωμαίοι, κακά λογοπαίγνια κ.λπ.). Η πόλη έχει ακόμη μεγαλύτερους κινδύνους, καθώς ανακαλύπτουν ότι μια συμμορία διακίνησης δρεπανιών έχει απαγάγει τη Metallurgix. Ακολουθούν κωμικές περιπέτειες.
Η ιστορία είναι διασκεδαστική και γρήγορη, μια τυπική περιπέτεια του Αστερίξ. Συνιστάται.

Asterix and his friend Obelix volunteer to make the journey to Lutetia (modern-day Paris) to buy a new sickle from famed artisan Metallurgix. The trip is full of perils (wolves, bandits, Romans, bad puns, etc.). The city has even greater perils, as they discover a sickle-trafficking gang has kidnapped Metallurgix. Comedic adventures ensue.
The story is fun and quick, a typical Asterix adventure.

Het vredige Gallische dorpje waar Asterix en Obelix wonen wordt verstoord door een kreet en dat luidt een nieuw avontuur voor de helden in. Panoramix’ gouden snoeimes is gebroken. En hij moet er dringend een nieuw hebben maar hij wil er enkel van Amerix, die woont in Lutetia. Dus stellen onze vrienden voor om er een nieuw te halen.
Aangekomen in Lutetia blijkt het stadsleven toch een groot verschil te zijn met dat van hun dorpje. Alles is er duurder, drukker en criminaliteit heerst. Want Amerix is verdwenen en er is geen enkel gouden snoeimes te bespeuren. Tot ze in contact komen met Fitnix, die snoeimessen op de zwarte markt verkoopt. Maar dan hebben ze geen rekening gehouden met Asterix en Obelix die niet enkel Amerix, die trouwens de neef is van Obelix, willen verlossen uit de klauwen van de bende die hem hebben ontvoerd maar zij willen de bende ook ineens oprollen. Maar dan moeten ze wel een aantal keer in én uit de gevangenis van de Romeinen zien te komen.
Opnieuw een heerlijk en vooral heel grappig album vol met doldwaze avonturen. En met een flacon toverdrank kan er Asterix gelukkig niks overkomen… Obelix die zijn neef een menhir meeneemt is ook grappig en hoe de verschillen tussen dorp en stad in beeld worden gebracht zijn zalig leesmateriaal! (Btw, Lutetia is de oude naam voor Parijs!)
