Tibetan Yogas of Body, Speech, and Mind

Rate this book

Understanding how our actions, words, and thoughts interact enhances our ability to progress in spiritual practice and brings us closer to self-realization. In a warm, informal style Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche opens up Tibetan meditation practice to both beginners and experienced students, placing as much emphasis on practice as on knowledge. Depending on the sources of the problems in our lives, he offers practices that work with the body, speech, or the mind—a collection of Tibetan yoga exercises, visualizations, sacred sound practices, and spacious meditations on the nature of mind. Together, he says, knowledge and regular meditation practice can alter our self-image and lead to a lighter, more joyful sense of being. The stillness of the body, the silence of speech, and the spacious awareness of mind are the true three doors to enlightenment.

Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche (བསྟན་འཛིན་དབང་རྒྱལ་ bstan 'dzin dbang rgyal) is a teacher (lama) of the Bön Tibetan religious tradition. He is presently based in the United States of America, where he founded the Ligmincha Institute in 1992 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, in order "to preserve the ancient teachings, transmissions and practices of the Bön Buddhist tradition."

The degree of "Geshe" is the highest academic achievement of traditional Tibetan culture, roughly equivalent to a Doctorate in Divinity; it's use in names is similar to that of the Western "Doctor." Similarly, "Rinpoche" is an honorific, meaning "Precious one," frequently bestowed on respected teachers.

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in spiritual and personal development. It is written in a very simple language which makes ancient traditions easy to understand(even for a non native speaker). The writer has lived in the West for a long time, and explains practices in a way that can be related to every day life of an average Western citizen. I am still in a process of practising exercise given there but can see myself getting more balanced and releasing unnecessary emotions. I believe that reading the book in combination with watching his seminars(can be found on Youtube) will ensure correct understanding and a better progress.

This is an excellent book that explores the various Dzogchen meditation practices. In this book the author introduces readers to practices of the body, speech and mind. Each of the practices is walked through and explained so that the reader can try them. I recommend doing the exercises regularly. After you've done them for a bit, you'll start to notice how your mental and physical state of being changes. The author does cover some of these practices in is other books, but what I like about this book is that he presents a different perspective that helps you deepen your understanding of those practices, complementing what he's shared in the other works. If you want to do internal work, this book is a great place to start or continue your journey.
