Mountain Gorilla: Laine’s Beech Mountain Story, Book 3, (Peggy's 22th novel, general fiction), 95,200 words, 307 pages (paperback)
A young mountain woman copes with another husband, running her farm, raising children, and a developer trying to take her land.
From Chapter 4:
“Let’s see if you’re really pregnant first,” Jonas sounded rather bored and a lot sleepy. “Then I’ll see what you can do about prevention. In the meantime, I’m going to bed early. I have a heavy workload tomorrow.”
“You work too hard,” I told him. “Why don’t you take a few days off and stay here with me and our babies.”
Jonas almost laughed. “Surely your mountain gorilla is getting enough work done for you without you wanting me to forget about my patients and help you.” This surprised me. I hadn’t been thinking about farm work. I was thinking about Jonas being tired from working too long and hard.
“Barnabus doesn’t need help,” I told Jonas. “If he did, I’d get him to send for his older brother. He says his brother is bigger and can do a lot more than he does. I didn’t expect you to take off and work on the farm,”
Peggy grew up on small farm in the Appalachians near Jefferson, NC; married young; finished school; made handcrafted folk toys; established her own farm on Grandfather Mountain near Boone; raised six children in a single-wide while growing burley tobacco, Christmas trees, and small fruits; built a house; raised small animals – all – while helping her husband do land surveying. Still farming, she enjoys her grand and great-grandchildren while creating novels sprinkled with the flavor of her mountain heritage. Since 2003 she has been writing about three books a year.
This series is indescribable except excellent. Never read a book where one young lady if I can call her a lady can get into so many unbelievable situations. 7 kids in less than 3 years. Deadly with a frying pan or shot gun. He’ll on wheels in a down right fight one thing after another. A heck of a temper and gets more gossip on her than a whole town. Never know what’s going to happen next. Can’t put the book down when I pick it up. Most series start to get a little hum drum. Fixing to start the fourth book and ever time I think I’ve read it all in a person life something happens even to top the things before. Action never slows down even though she seldom leaves the mountain top farm. Land. That’s what seems to be the closest thing to happiness. Violence killing deceitfinesse cunning hatred and that’s just a start. But a good mother and very popular with the folks in the area except the ones that has chosen to be her enemy. Crazy things happen constantly. Humerus and heartfelt situation that you couldn’t immune till you turn a page.
Laine just kept being pregnant throughout this book! And Jonas really jumped the shark!! I think I don't want Jonas to be Laine's husband. Great read. Ms. Peggy writes a smooth continous story. This book ended a bit short. **Ms Peggy, please hire an editor to proofread your books. #TeamBarnabus #SweetMaw #TeamLil'MunsonPearlGirl #DamnRattlesnakes #PickThisBook #ReadThisSeries
Sorry to say, I was disappointed in the third book in this series. For me, the author ran out of steam and filled too much space with repeated scenes from the first two books. I still want to find out what happens next to this strong independent woman.
I love Laine, and this series. The characters are so well written, that I can't wait to open the book and see what they're doing. I dislike Jonas, but even so, the author has shown us why he's acting like a rat.
I really like Miss Peggy continuing the story of Laine. I want to know what happens to her. It is a comfort to keep on reading. I can't wait to read the next book
Another masterpiece from Peggy. She is such an amazing writer and I can blast through each of these books in one day. ❤️ I can't wait to read the next when it comes in the mail.
I liked this one better than the second one. Laine´s is growing up and becoming wiser. I loved Barnabus and his family. Let´s see what number 4 is about.
The story deserves a high rating because of accuracy of life for mountain women of that time. Anyone interested in mountain culture should read all of the books in this series.
