A Darkly Sweet, Twisted Retelling of The Beauty and the Beast.

A night could change everything.
Consume a cold heart in heat…
Open a heart that has been closed…
Intertwine two lives for a lifetime…and beyond.

The only thing Reno Sundown has ever known is pain. How to take it and how to use it. He was created that way and once his purpose was done, he was locked away. Never had he known good, laughter, love until he met her.

Emma Devenmore has always focused on one thing, family. The eldest of her sisters, she has made life centered on protection. Protecting her family and doing her job of protecting others. A love story was never in her plans, until she met him.

By chance, their paths cross and both were forever changed. A Beauty left yearning for a Beast, who had opened her up to something she had never dreamed of.

A Beast left wanting for a Beauty, who had unlocked emotions he never knew possible, and never was supposed to know existed.

Once paths are crossed, can they ever be uncrossed? Once they are crossed, are they destined to grow together? Or can they only be consumed by complete Madness?

About the Author

Born and raised in Texas, Ward is a mixed bag of creativity spinning tales of paranormal, urban fantasy and even dark romance and horror; wrapped within a love story.

She’s been dared by her readers to write a few contemporary romances but even those reads have characters that are real and twisted by their creator. It did, however, spawn her romance tag line: Romance - The Ward Way.

Mother of three diverse and independent bold children, Ward prides herself for being the “Queen Niche’ Bitch” which is a handy way of saying she sucks writing to market.
But her readers don’t seem to mind.

How can a lethal killing machine also be a warm, frightened and lonely man who craves the love of only one woman who never knew he existed? Tighten your seatbelt, grab some tissues and prepare for the talent that is Jas T. Ward in her series opener,Madness. You may never look at the myths of gods and goddesses the same again as they manipulate the strings of their human puppets while toying with the denizens of heaven and hell.

Who is Reno Sundown? Is he the Beast to Emma’s Beauty? Is this another tale of forbidden love that even the gods cannot deny? Lies, secrets, heartbreak and joy, more lies, new discoveries and a little more deceit, and that is only the tip of the iceberg for Reno and Emma. They share a past that only Reno and the gods know about, but they share something else that makes their love even more bittersweet as jealousy, hatred and a past long left behind comes back to haunt Reno. Its no wonder the rage that builds within him makes him the perfect warrior and killing machine in the Grid. Yet again, like Russian nesting dolls, opening one up leads to more questions and more revelations that have even the gods in shock.

You will cry, you will want to avenge Reno’s pain. What happens to this broken man is pure hell as he must run from the only good thing in his life, Emma, and the sense of family and belonging she gave him. I sat with my heart in my throat, afraid to breathe at times. And my anger? The only thing that stopped me from literally jumping through my Kindle screen to bash some evil heads together was its out of warranty. Yeah, it’s that good.

Jas T. Ward has a style of her own. A little twisted, very fresh and like a man shot out of a cannon, she rockets her readers right into her world, into her story and into the heart of the action. With no timid strokes on her canvas, Ms. Ward may become the new standard to beat in the paranormal romantic intrigue genre. The detail to each scene, the sights, the sounds, the smells of sweat and fear, it’s all here, page after page as her desperate lovers struggle against a world that just won’t let them be. With an original flavor to tantalize the masses, Jas T. Ward has a hit series on her hands, for sure!

I received this copy from Jas T. Ward in exchange for my honest review.

I can truly say this book is flat out awesome. Being a long time fan of Reno's story on social media I was worried that I couldnt read this story with all the changes or that Reno and Emma's story may not come across as potent as it was to me as in the past. However, in true Jas fashion I am not disappointed at all. I love this story. I love this couple and I love this version. The writer stayed true to the love story of these two characters yet she has given me new twists and turns with the book version. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed the characters Sundown and Sophia! This story will have your heart twisting in dramatic fashion all while sitting on the edge of your seat hoping beauty can save her beast. Well done Jas, well done.

3.5/5.0

This is one that holds SO much potential! It is a really innovative and engrossing story. It's just bogged down with pages-long info dumps to explain the very complex world, its past and the characters who inhabit it. If the author could simplify all that information so it flows more rather than stopping the story (partly while we try to figure it all out!) This would be a 5 star winner!

Madness!!! I absolutely LOVED IT! Jas has a way with words that for me I see a movie as I read. I've been reading Reno's story almost from the beginning and I really can't put into words how happy I am that his story is told. Reno someone who should not have been,Beast. Emma heart broken and missing that someone special that seems out of reach,Beauty. You cheer them on as you laugh and cry with them. And Sundown how can you not love his bad ass self. I just loved it!!!

The plot line of Madness is so unique, refreshing and intrigued me from the get go. I really loved the world, the characters and the premise. What wasn't so awesome was the delivery and pacing and I'm not very forgiving when it comes to pace and consistency. Madness is full of starts and stops, with short spurts of interesting to be followed by long info dumps and blah.

This story could have been 5 star worthy had the world building been worked in smaller spurts and spread throughout story and the pacing more consistent. I'm intrigued enough to continue the series with the hopes that these issues improve.

Imaginative, visual, touching, humor, action, great characters and makes you think; this book has everything. Ward has a way with words that paints a very vivid picture in your mind. The world created in this book is well thought out and is an interesting twist on the work of actual great minds of the past.

Reno is such a unique character. He's sweet, innocent, fun, funny and sometimes he looks at the world in such a simplistic way, it makes you think why don't we all think that way? Yet, at the same time, he's -for lack of a better way to phrase it- bad ass.

While this is Reno and Emma's story, there is so much more to it. I found that I was just as interested in the many other characters as I was in Reno and Emma. I never felt like I wanted to hurry through a part to get to the next scene with Reno and Emma. It was all good.

The action I could see clearly in my mind. The tension between the characters, sexual or otherwise, I could feel. Overall, just a great read.

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book. For those who are not familiar with Ward's writing, I highly suggests picking up a copy of Ward's "Bits and Pieces: Tales and Sonnets". It is a great introduction to her writing and it also includes as a bonus, the prelude to the Shadow-Keepers Series. A great read while you're waiting for the release of Madness.

I expect a lot out of books. I'm a picky reader. Especially if it is a supernatural/magical type book. I want to hate the bad guy and love the hero.

Now, at first glance you'd never think that this was a love story. But it is. The good guy thinks he's bad because that's what he was made for only, he was made for more things than even he could imagine. I loved the fight he had within himself and the doubt he held. I loved how love always ALWAYS finds a way. Once you start reading you DON'T wanna stop. It pulls you in because you have all the elements.

You've got the love that shouldn't be, but is, You've got action and conflict, You've got twists even I did not see coming. Ward took modern knowledge of heaven and hell and gave it her own twist into this world she created.

It goes without saying I think this book and series will be successful because it's different. It's not your typical love story where the good guy is sorta bad. Reno has depth, Reno is unique. You'll fall in love over and over again.

I Loved It!!!

I am so excited about this book. Us fans have been waiting years for this book. My PRECIOUS, is what a lot of us devoted fans call this book :) Jas is a very talented story teller/writer, and this book is going to be a fantastic read. Prepare to be blown away by this story. <3

OMG!!! Jas you did it! Once again you had me on a emotional roller coaster ride! I laughed, smiled, cried, got angry, then laughed and cried some more. You stayed true to the story of Reno & Emma. It was like watching a movie. Every word brought to life in my mind what was being told. I love it, like I knew I would. I got sad when the book end. Well done Jas! Well done!! :)

When I sat down to read an ARC of "Madness" by fellow writer Jas T. Ward, I knew I was in for an adventure of epic proportions that would make Alice's header down the rabbit hole look like child's play.

And I always love it when I'm right.

From page one, I felt the intense pull of this world Jas has created lift up and wrap around me, rushing me into a vivid landscape of wicked, fresh originality. There is something both deliciously foreign yet wholly familiar about the bold characters as they dance through all measure of human (and non human) experience. The exquisite pain, the unparalleled pleasure, the seductive darkness and the addicting agony; it lives in us all. And that is Jas's magic, he holds up the mirror of a truth that lives in everyone, but that we always deny. He forces us to not just look...but SEE.

I felt a kinship to several of his creations and the witty dialogue, along with the fast pace, had me pouting when I finished it. Jas...MORE. MORE. MORE. Don't make me beg.

A good book resonates and leaves you a bit sad when you realize it's over and you're forced to return to the "real" world.

A great book, however, leaves you looking around and wondering how the hells the world around you is ever going to be the same again after all you just lived through, thanks to the author.

Rarely do I find a book I have trouble setting aside to take care of chores or even sleep on a work night, but this is one of those I hated putting down. Reno is sweet and you can't help but love him especially as you learn more about him. You suffer with him, laugh, cry, and ache with him. Jas' writing style is so easy going and yet descriptive that you can't read the book and not see the scene's in your head exactly as you imagine she pictures them.

The characters of Madness are so real, so believable. They all have their faults, even the heroes aren't stereotypical. As extraordinary as the Shadow-Keeper world is, you feel like you know the characters, that they're everyday people. I want to see more of Reno and Emma, watch Sophia grow, figure out if Yin Yang is up to something more than what it seems, learn what happened to Bounce's family, and meet the other Keepers. I don't know if I can wait a whole year for Lust, but I'll just have to keep reading Madness to tide me over until next December.

An electrifying read that makes walking the fine grey line between good and evil, sexy as hell.

This story was a series opener where you’re introduced to the key players. Ward manages to bring the characters into the story in such a fashion that you feel an immediate connection with them. Instead of getting acquainted with strangers, it feels like meeting up with an old friend. Each new character is brought in with the same ease as the one before. They all line up and mesh in a way that is believable.

I like being shown not just the strengths of a character but their weaknesses too. To be able to care, feel, and see both sides to witness something that is more than just words on a page.

The main character’s intense passion for all things winds you up as a reader. You can almost feel the sugar rush, the chaotic vibration of raw, barely contained anger, and the pull of good versus evil.

Overall, I found this to be a very interesting and entertaining read and I can’t wait for the next installment. I look forward to collecting this series.

When you sit down to read a book, sometimes you expect to just well...read a book. Madness isn't just a book, it isn't just a story, it's an experience. It's being pulled into a world that is so rich and so deep that it becomes your own. You connect with each and every character, you feel for them, cry for them and laugh with them. In a way the touch you to the point they become a part of you. Jas has managed to do that in such a beautiful way that it's almost unbelievable. It left me full and completely hungry by the end because all you can say is "DAMN that was good and I want more." Reading the world that Jas has created, reminds a reader why they love to read. Why being pulled into a book is one of the greatest feelings one can have. I'm officially a hooked and can't wait to get another taste of what Madness and the world of the Shadow- Keepers have in store.

When it came to this book, to say that excitement to read it was an understatement, and Jas did not dissapoint. I was sucked in on the first chapter, after that I couldn't put it down. I found myself laughing, crying, and angry but I think that's what Jas went for. Amazing isn't a good enough word for this book, and I look forward to the next book waiting on the edge of my seat until it's out. Jas you rocked it like I knew you would.

Well, the cheese stands alone. I'm very aware I'm in the minority with this review, and let me be clear: this is no shade whatsoever on the author (I pride myself on keeping artists of all mediums separate from their work). But... I have a feeling this book is reviewed by die hard fans of urban fantasy/paranormal romance, who know the genre is a bit flawed, but love it anyway. Sort of akin to the big umbrella of romance readers. Good on them for both unabashedly loving what they love, and supporting an indie author in the process. Thing is, I've never been an urban fantasy/paranormal romance reader. I picked this up because the back blurb boasted a beauty and the beast re-imagining... and I kind of found that element didn't' exist beyond the surface level. Reno is a tortured being, only experiencing the bad bits of a two part soul, and Emma is a Witch/healer who is good to her sisters. That's kind of it. The pacing is breakneck, love is declared less than 100 pages in, and did any proofreading go into this? I read this, pen in hand, editing for my own sanity. How can I explain this... the spacing between certain words is too wide, many words within sentences are printed "t h e", before resuming a normal space, seeming to mean the word was copy/pasted in a different font from a different file/device, missing commas, convoluted sentence structure. If it happened once or even a few times, I'd let it go. But this went on throughout the book and each time, without fail, the mistakes took me out of the world. If you enjoyed it, good on you. But I am glad I picked it up. You can't give an opinion on a genre until you've tried it.

Reno is a dichotomy of contradictions. He’s innocent yet sinful, naïve yet experienced, benevolent yet malicious but above all he’s sincere in his quest to live his own life and he doesn’t take for granted the gift of life bestowed upon him. It’s that division of light, dark and madness that makes him such an alluring character. The story had me hooked the moment Reno drew a happy face with a wagging tongue in Eater goo.

“I figure it didn’t smile much and should go out happy.”

Jas T. Ward does an amazing job of building up and establishing a story about a man whose very existence began as a voice trapped inside of another man’s head. She draws upon some existing myths but she inserts them into a new world unlike no other with a host of unique compelling characters sprung directly from her creative mind. For those unfamiliar with the man known as Reno, Reno Sundown was once a split personality belonging to a Breaker named Jess (Breakers are warriors from Hell whose job is to take out evil beings called Eaters who pray upon human kind). After Jess breaks the heart of a Relay healer named Emma, Reno falls into a state of depression and decides that he will no longer serve his intended purpose as the dark side Jess needs to control the madness inside his mind.

The only solution to save Jess from the madness and keep Reno in existence is to separate the two. Jess is able to move on without his destructive split personality. He thinks Reno was destroyed during the separation but Reno has started a brand new life in his own body. He’s a Breaker now working for Bounce and the Grid. He spends his nights fighting against the evil Eaters to help protect human kind. He’s so grateful for his second chance that he does everything he can to be a hero worthy of his life. He follows all the rules his boss Bounce gives him including staying far away from the Witch Emma whom he fell madly in love with when he was inside Jess’s head, that is until Bounce sends him back to San Francisco where Emma lives. After running into his Witch he’ll willingly break the rules to have a real chance at being with the woman he loves.

I always enjoy stories that have flawed and unlikely characters that rise above everything despite the obstacles in front of them. Reno is that type of hero but so much more. In a world full of action, mystery and romance he shines above the rest. I’m looking forward to the next book and I’m interested in seeing how the Keepers are going to impact the ongoing war with Epsilon and his Eaters. It should be gripping and amusing with Reno involved.

Intelligent read

The first time I read this book I found it confusing. I now know that it is because Jas writes books that are fast paced, intelligent, intriguing and fascinating. Her characters come alive to me. Her writing style switches characters from one paragraph to the next. So you literally not knowing what or who comes next.
Once I got around her writing style in my head, I found I loved this one and the next 2 books in the series.

I have to say that I really love the premise of the story and these characters...Wow! So unique and individual that I don't feel like I'm watching a repeat of someone else's tale. Where this one fell a little short for me, was that I didn't feel clued in, or drawn into the plot until the last 20% of this book.

I recommend you view this review as strictly my opinion because, well, I'm a "grab me by the throat on page 1" kinda girl, but know that I am intrigued enough to seek out the next installment.

Madness is about Reno, a Breaker working for the Grid, and Emma, a Healer-Relay also working for the Grid. I have nothing I'd want changed in this book, it flows well and was easy to read. It made sense, and held my attention. And the best part? I cried, I got angry, I got confused and I was surprised only to want to cry some more. Emotion is a big thing for me. Make me feel, you have me. Jas T. Ward made me feel within these pages. The twists caught me completely off guard, pulling yet more emotion from me. All in all, the writing was wonderful, and even believable.

However, I give four stars for one reason alone: the glossary. Rather than placing it in front, it would serve the reader better to put it in the back. Positioning. It annoys me, especially with e-books, when I have to flip so many pages to get to the story. The information given was interesting, however. I do suggest reading it, just not until you read the story. Most of the information you need is already in the story.

Well I have to say the book was awesome. I enjoyed it thoroughly and have found myself returning to it again, just to make sure I hadn't missed anything.

The characters jumped off the page and into my heart, gotta love a book that can do that. There were many Aww moments, great action scenes and many moments that just made my heart sing.

I'm looking forward to the next one in the series with bated breath. Very well done Jas, you've got me hooked!!

I would recommend this book to anyone who just wants a feel good moment, it's one of those books that just cannot be resisted and brings a smile to your face....along with a few what the hell moments.

All I can say is bring on the next one!!!

OMG! This is awsome! For a long time I hesitated to read this serie because the cover seems so dark. I tought it was a sad and dark story. What a stupid preconceived idea! It was awsome. Reno is so powerful and so vulnerable at the same time. And it make sense! I mean it shouldn't but it so well written it's all perfect! It is so different from other PNR romance but I highly recommend it. LOVE IT!

"I'm not whole without you. I don't have a heart that beats without yours to call it to do so. I never knew love, peace or kindness before you. You're not only good enough for me, Witch. You're everything. You're the beauty to my beast. I'm savage without your love to calm me. I'm useless without your faith that made me."

Well, where do I start? Is this a paranormal thriller? Is it horror? Is it an action story? Is it a romance? If you're wondering, the answer is YES!!!

Take one pissed off demon, who blames both Heaven and Earth for his tragedies, determined to bring darkness to the world in hopes that humanity will destroy itself and the balance of light and dark will tip in his favor, add to that a team of other demons sworn to keep the balance from tipping one way or the other, throw in Eaters, Breakers, Relays, and .... well Reno, and you're in for one heckuva ride!!

The whole story of how Reno came to be was outright brilliant. I don't think I've ever ready a story line so original, twisted, and complex as this one! Then to find out who, or what, he truly is and the purpose he will serve? WOW!! And, while the battle between light and dark rages on, you have an amazing love story between Reno and Emma. For so long he loved her but could never touch her. Then to finally have the life he had always wanted within his grasp, only to see it pulled form him yet again, my heart broke. But true love knows no boundaries, and even death can't keep him from her.

I loved this story! I'll be moving on to book 2 as soon as humanly, or un-humanly possible!!!

So this is the first book i have read by this author and it is the first book i n the shadow keeper series so i wasn't sure what to expect when i started reading. But i am definitely glad i gave it a chance, it drew me in from the beginning. Without going into to much detail Reno has been given a chance at life and it brings him back to the only woman he wants. But can he live his new found life and protect the woman that he loves from everything , including him and everything that is coming.
The author has created a story with brilliant characters, action and romance.

This is the start of a new series and is dark, intense, and filled with angst, humor, and love. This is the story of Emma and Reno. He is a demon and blames the tragedies in his life on heaven and earth. Unitl the day he meets Emma and his views shift. I enjoyed this original and creative story. I was so intrigued by these characters. I look forward to the next one. I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I LOVED this book

Reno and his madness stole my heart. The author did a fantastic job on character development in this book. Reno is the right mix of passion, loyalty, insanity, darkness, and light. Fantastic character. Plus the storyline is creative and a fascinating spin on traditional stories of Heaven and Hell. Well worth the read!
