Heidi bravely enters her school’s talent show, but finds she is in need of some enchanted assistance! It’s time for the Brewster Elementary Talent Show, but Heidi Heckelbeck doesn’t want to perform because she thinks she has no talent. Then Heidi finds a special pair of shoes in the attic and decides she will do a dance—but she may need a little help from her Book of Spells! With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, the Heidi Heckelbeck chapter books are perfect for beginning readers.
I don't like this series. In this one, there is a school talent show and Heidi has no talent. She's rude to her brother, her friends are rude to her, and its just the nasty, catty side of childhood that I don't enjoy reading about. She uses magic to cast a spell that will allow her to tap dance. The spell wears off and she is afraid she's going to be in trouble but nobody's mad and no lessons were learned.
Eh. I read this out loud to my 4 year old. Maybe I should have read the cover a little better in the library (vs. quite literally choosing it by it's fun looking cover & illustrations throughout...). I had no idea that Heidi was a witch until more than halfway through the book when it just randomly was mentioned. Probably would have been better off reading the first book in the series, but the 'series' isn't easily identifiable by numbers so I kind of just grabbed one.
Aside from me not really paying attention to what we chose, I wasn't overly impressed. The first half of the book was Heidi whining and degrading herself that she didn't have any talent at all. And she could only find a talent by using magic to cheat. Not really the best message to send young girls. I don't really think we'll be reading any more Heidi Heckelbeck, my daughter didn't love it so much that she's begging to read the next one.

Heidi wants to be in the talent show because Melanie keeps saying that she's weird. So she wants to do something normal like the talent show. Heidi casts a spell to be a good dancer so she could be really good at the talent show and impress people. I think the lesson is that you don't need magic, you just have to have a feel for what you're doing. Everybody has a talent- you just have to find yours.
I Think that this book talks about cheating is not what makes things better. I thought that because when Heidi started tap dancing, only the first ten seconds the spell worked but after, she had to do it in her own. she had no idea to tap dancing, so she got frustrated. but it the end, she got more cheers then the first ten seconds.
The school talent show was coming up, and Heidi didn't have a talent. So she used a magic spell to make her good at tap dancing and she found her mom's old tap shoes. She really rocked the show until the spell wore off. She got in trouble for using a spell, but she was good even when the spell wore off.
This was my first foray into Heidi Heckelbeck so it may not have been the best place to start but I really wasn't impressed.
The book is about a talent show and a solid two-thirds of it has Heidi complaining she has no talent and nay-saying every helpful suggestion. In the end, she relies on magic to enchant her feet to dance and with no practice or hard work whatsoever, does wonderfully at the talent show with no repercussions for what is practically cheating. Even her brother, who did work very hard on his routine, is impressed with Heidi and she has to throw him a bone and tell him she secretly thinks his act was better.
What kind of a message is this for 5 year olds? Hard work doesn't pay off? Cheating is good as long as you don't get caught? Ugh!
The only reason this book is getting 2 and not 1 star is because it did hold my daughter's attention, so that's at least one positive.
gr 2-3/4 I really like the size of this book, the font, and the illustrations. And the storytelling is really pretty good, until I read through to the end. I have been aware of this series, and this is the first one I chose to read. If you haven't read the other books, it comes as a surprise that Heidi is a witch - which doesn't come out until the last third of the story. Otherwise Heidi seems like a normal everyday kid. This was jarring. And Heidi also used a potion to present in the talent show - which didn't have her solving her own problem. Plus, Heidi's aunt noted that Heidi had stage fright - which Heidi agreed about - and that story line didn't go anywhere. So my criticism is about the arc of the story. The writing, however, is nicely done, from page one, where the twisted swing chain is a physical clue to Heidi's mind twisted into indecision.
Finally got to finish this one, and I must say I loved it. ------------- Heidi is a little troublemaker. But, she is determined to be in the talent show, and she feels like she has no talent. So, eventually, her father shows her the tap shoes her mother used to use. Heidi decides to tap-dance for the talent show. She casts a spell to do so. But, the spell wears off mid-dance during the talent show. Everyone still loves it. ------------ I loved this. I honestly didn't know there are 6 others when reading it. A month or so ago, I started reading this at Decatur's Kroger. They got rid of the 2 of this series they had. I found it in Hartselle's Kroger on Saturday, and finished it. I would love to read other books from this series.
Heidi has worries about the school talent show. What's a girl to do when her only talent is casting spells, and she can't exactly do that up in front of everybody. So instead she tries to cheat by creating a talent by casting one of those spells to make sure she's a success. You'd think by now Heidi would know better than to look for magical shortcuts. Of course, her dancing feet let her down and she's forced to find her own way to shine. A good lesson here, only it's one Heidi never actually learns....
Nice description of stage fright and the pressure to perform. I also like how Heidi assigns the talent of art and kickball to two kids who do something completely different for the talent show.
And what's up with Principal Pennypacker? Does he know Heidi's a witch? How? Where in the world did this plot twist come from? And why is it totally absent from the following works?! Arg!
heidi saw dad geting out some tap shoes and then she said who are they for he said this used to be your moms. then he left. heidi tried on the tapshoes and danced with them then she herd that there was a contest of dancing then she made a potion and drank it. she went to the contest and danecedthen she won first place
its about there is going to be a talent show and Heidi can't find a talent she can do so when her dad gives her tap dance shoes she has an idea so she casts a spell on her self that makes her tap really good after her amazing dance her parents are mad at her but they forgive her.
Heidi doesn't think that she has a talent. Could magic be her talent? Fans of Junie B. Jones will probably enjoy reading about Heidi. I like how she learns a lesson in every book.
