Andy Selters has climbed all over North America, Mexico, and Asia and has spent time as a guide and trainer for the American Alpine Institute in Bellingham, Washington. He is the author of four mountain guidebooks and numerous mountaineering articles. He lives in Bishop, California.

Not much to review: this is a textbook and manual on basic glacier techniques.

The book is well done with clear instructions and easy to follow diagrams.

Would recommend for anyone climbing on glaciated peaks.

I checked it out from the library, but this is one of those books that are better to own because of the valuable information it contains for reference. I’d highly recommend it to anyone planning on traveling on glaciers.

Helpfully clear and direct, this book provides a fair amount of insight into the basics of what one should be considering before venturing into crevasse country. People already familiar with avalanches will have a leg up on understanding the forces at work in snow and ice compaction, fracturing, and behavior, as will students of mountain weather patterns. As a hiker beginning to consider mountaineering proper, though, this was the introduction I was looking for, and I can use the knowledge from it to help me find instruction in travel techniques and appropriate gear.
