Trollkin Lovers #3

Capturing the Orc's Heart

Rate this book
Dishonored and heartbroken, Lieutenant Agkar the orc has just transferred to the inhospitable desert of the Hazrain—a neutral zone between human and trollkin—to work in the city guard. But he despises his new superior officer, Captain Zirelle Mastair, a human woman who gets to boss him around day in and day out. It's humiliating.

The tough-as-nails Captain Mastair doesn't care much for the new lieutenant either, or his impertinent attitude, which gets in the way of her all-important work. Yet she senses a deep wound underneath his hard exterior that speaks to her own. What scarred him so much that he came to the barren desert to escape it?

While on a mission to track down a fugitive, the captain and the lieutenant are stranded in a cavern hideout. Will all of their pent-up frustration with one other finally burst?

I’m so glad Agkar got his happy ending! Zirelle was a badass overworked captain who was lonely but resistant to letting anyone in. Agkar was grouchy and jaded from his unrequited love for Nera and took out his frustrations on Zirelle. The forced proximity was a nice touch - making them see each other outside of the rigid city guard order. I would have loved more in depth conversations between the main characters on page, but it was still well done.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: Alcoholism, Violence, Power imbalance, Mentions of slavery, Mentions of drugs and drug use, Accidental pregnancy, Breeding, Assassination (off-screen), Stabbing and mortal wounds, Birth, mentions of parent death

The PLOT! The previous works of Lyonne Riley that I have read have been very character-driven (which I am not complaining about, they have been incredible), so I am delightfully surprised to read something from this author that is a bit more story-driven. And these characters?? Riley has knocked it out of the park once again with these complex, vivid characters that are so unique from characters we have met before. I am extremely happy with this third installment in the Trollkin Lovers universe and I cannot wait to read more!

It's Orc-Tober! I'm obsessed with this series and needed to read this one immediately after the last!

This one follows lieutenant Agkar who was in love with Nera in the previous book. In this book he is transferred to the a neutral zone and is placed under the command of a human woman named Zirelle.

The Good
I liked Agkar and Zirelle as characters. Agkar was much angstier than the previous book after his defeat. Zirelle was someone trying to do her best in her position with a real fear of not being enough. I liked her journey in this story a lot and how she found meaning outside of her job.

The Bad
I didn't feel the instant chemistry/connection between Agkar and Zirelle like I did with previous couples. They did grow on me eventually though.

Tropes:
— Forced Proximity
— Forbidden Love
— Rejected Mates

Horn Level: 5/5🌶️
Format: Ebook — Libby

The Rating
I give this book a 4/5🌟 rating. This book felt a bit angster than the previous ones but was still great!

This is one of my favorites in the whole series. I love the relationship between the captain and her lieutenant. Something about how nothing works out perfectly for them, but they find a way in the end to have a happy, loving relationship. It was hard-earned, too! There is a good bit of angst in this book. It was pretty great, especially with the first spicy scene in the cave. I was screaming at both of them to just talk to each other and admit their feelings, they are both so stubborn!

I LOVED Agkar from Healing the Orc Heart and was excited to see him find his little human to love. He deserved it after everything. The captain, Zirelle, is such a boss! She is strong and stubborn and just really perfect for her orc. I particularly loved that she wasn't the mothering type, even after she had a kid with Agkar. I just really appreciated the representation, and I LOVE the vision of Daddy Agkar. I can't help but just adore him so much.

ARC Review:

I am officially obsessed with this world and this author’s storytelling!

This was all the things I love—swoony, steamy, and so deliciously angsty that I honestly can’t believe it was just a little ol’ novella length book..like how does she do it?!

I’m a big fan of novellas and I typically expect just an overall good time when I read them..but this author somehow manages to develop a certain depth in her stories that actually makes you feel all the feels that you’d expect from a full length novel.

I think a lot of us can see some of ourselves in Zirelle. She is strong, independent, takes no BS, and demands respect. She works herself to the bone because she knows that she will be judged harshly because she is a woman in a position of power that is historically held by men—so she has more to prove by default.

Agkar is a broody orc escaping a broken heart..and as a result, he too keeps his guard up because he refuses to be hurt again by a human woman. But he’s willing to fight hard to earn Zirelle’s vulnerability, and wants nothing more than for her to let him in to carry some of her burden.

Slowly, we begin to see both characters unravel as they drive themselves crazy fighting this unexplainable pull between them.

I laughed, cried, smiled, swooned, and kicked my feet like a teenager. This absolutely exceeded my expectations and I couldn’t be more excited to read more from this author! Highly recommend!!

Another wonderful Trollkin story featuring our grumpy Lieutenant Agkar and the human woman who not only captures his heart, but heals it. I was so excited for this one after Healing. Something about our heartbroken Orc really spoke to me so I was eager to see him get a happy ending. This couple really fights their desire and the tension was delicious, but the fallout was even better! Who’s next?! I have a couple of hunches…

*I received a free ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Even in the feminist-leaning realms of indie romance, women with dominant personalities are not as prevalent as I personally think they should be. So if you’re anything like me, Capturing the Orc’s Heart by Lyonne Riley would be worth a read. Not only does Riley take a chance on a story featuring an FMC with a dominant personality, but she also sells a romance that reads as tender and authentic.

As with other books in this series, this is the sort of book that I think could be read on its own. Would you benefit from reading the previous books? Definitely. You aren’t boxing yourself in one way or another though.

This story focuses on a city not previously explored in the other series. It is connected to the others, but Riley artfully makes those details a backdrop for the main action going on.

That main action had a sort of police procedural or spy movie feel without truly diving in head-first. This is fantasy after all. That being said, FMC made me think of a young Chief from the *Carmen Sandiego* game and TV series. Someone could tell me this was an AU fanfic of young Chief and I’d be inclined to believe it. The Millennial kid in me loves that idea.

The story of Agkar and Zirelle is very different from the previous books in this series, and I loved every minute of it just the same. Watching Agkar’s broken heart heal and Zirelle finding a purpose beyond her work was a beautiful thing. I loved the dynamic of their relationship that came with their positions in their workplace; it made for an interesting power play. The ending was so incredibly sweet and felt very true to the characters. Monster romance lovers, you have to read this series.

**ARC review** Opinions are my own

This is my first book from Lyonne Riley so I am unfamiliar with the Trollkin universe. However, this can be read as a standalone, and Riley does a fantastic job of quickly explaining and setting up the world and its history.

4/5 stars—💯 will reread

Zirelle is a badass and I love the reverse positions of power. He comes in as her Lieutenant and she, the Captain. She is also a POC which is always wonderful and refreshing to read about, even in a monster romance.

There are multiple POVs, which I absolutely loved. The insight into Agkar’s mind was vulnerable and heart-warming, whereas Zirelle’s thoughts were a little darker and more deeply traumatic, in my opinion. I enjoyed the insight into their individual histories and how they came to be where they are, which inevitably adds more meaning to the journey of how they come together, and learn to stay together.

The spice was fantastic; typical monster smut that I never tire of. There is a breeding trope in this, which I’m also here for. He definitely falls faster for her first, although she’s stubborn so it takes her a minute to leave denial-land, only to realize that she needs him just as much.

My favorite thing about this novel:
She’s a career woman and he knew from the get-go that she didn’t necessarily want a family. She goes off and does her thing while he steps into the role of main caretaker of their child while she travels for work. I wasn’t expecting this level of detail in the epilogue, but I fucking loved it. I know this isn’t explicitly pointed out in other novels or epilogues but the fact that Riley called it out really warmed my heart. It just made them SO real to me ❤️🥹

My small quips:
—While this is an enemies to lovers trope, they weren’t enemies for very long. On the one hand, I’m glad that the story was fast paced and we got to the meat of story asap, but on the other, I also would have liked to have a little more angst and banter between them.
—Zirelle opens up the “more than coworkers” door pretty quickly. One minute they’re at each others’ throats and the next she’s hitting on him. It gave me a bit of whiplash.

My favorite quotes:
“Then, out of nowhere, she hits me across the face.” **I DIED**

“I burrow my face into her perfect hair. She smells like everything I’ve needed, like the missing piece of my heart.”

“Oh, do I loathe this plan.”

“She was never destined for mothering, I know that. I knew it the moment I bonded with her, and even then, I had accepted my role.“

“Sometimes it (Zirelle’s work) takes her away for days, even weeks at a time, and it’s just me and Keza exploring the beautiful, sweet-smelling city together.”

Note to the author: what is UP with the carving of the two faces?!?! I NEED TO KNOW.

Capturing the Orc's Heart was an exceptional read! Once again, I found myself immersed in the Trollkin series, eager to discover Akgar's journey following the events of the second book. The character of Zirelle, a strong and assertive female captain, was a highlight for me, especially in her interactions with Akgar, her new lieutenant. Their dynamic was intriguing, particularly as she attempts to assert her authority while he grapples with his lingering resentment towards humans after his experiences with Nera.

The adventure elements were thrilling, especially their travels through the desert and the pursuit of the notorious gang known as the Black Fox. The way they managed to outsmart them before the climax was engaging, and I appreciated how Zirelle's parents played a significant role in a tough decision she faces in the later chapters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the entire series, and I am eagerly looking forward to continuing my journey through the Trollkin saga!

Basic Plot: A guard captain deals with a grumpy new recruit, and together they find a way forward.

Freebie! Overall, cute and spicy. I feel like the world was interesting, but since I dove in at book 3 there is a lot about it that I just don't know. The traumas the couple had, combined with high pressure jobs and power dynamics created real friction. I feel like everything was dealt with well. I just wanted more story.

"No. Absolutely not. I do not need to be thinking of my superior officer this way—especially not my human superior officer."

One thing Lyonne Riley does absolutely brilliantly is building tension between two characters - longing and lust and it's really ramped between Orc Agkar and Human Zirelle.

Agkar was left reeling after his love life took a hit in the previous book, heading to the far reaches of the desert to bury his head in sand. He isn't looking to fall in love again. Zirelle is the hard-headed Captain of the Guard. She isn't looking for love, either.

Then, they get trapped in a cave together, scuppering their plans!!

I absolutely love this series. I've devoured every book so far with relish. The stories are filled with mutual pining, miscommunication, forced proximity, mating/breeding kink and steam! They're fun injections of monster romance, easy-to-read and I highly recommend them as the fore-runners in orc (and troll) smut.
Perfect.

This series literally keeps getting better. Lyonne Riley is quickly becoming a go to author for short, steamy and cute monster romances for me. This book is my favorite so far and I've enjoyed all the books in the Trollkin Lovers series. Agkar and Zirelle gave me everything I wanted. Their banter was on point, their chemistry was on point, the angst was angstin and the sex was hot as hell.

I flew through this book, it was so good. I loved both the characters. They worked my nerves at times doing the most. Zirelle really worked them in the last few chapters being difficult as hell but I still thought they were well written and likeable. Seeing them go from enemies to lovers was well worth it. The book was only 150 pages but it flowed really well. I hope this series goes on for a couple more books. I will definitely be rereading this book over many more times in the future.

I received an ARC from the author

This the first I've picked up in the Trollkin Lovers series and I'm definitely going to snag the others after reading this one. There is something about Lyonne's writing that sucks me in the moment I crack the page and I don't want to put it down until I'm done. Even with two protagonists who start antagonizing each other right from the beginning (which I love) and soften towards each other. I love that Agkar loves being bossed around by Zirelle and the moments where she took command were chef's kiss. I am also a huge sucker for angst and the accidental pregnancy was done so well. Zirelle was torn and I was tearing up just wanting them to get their happy ending and raise their little family. I adored this story and can't wait to get through the rest of Lyonne's work.

Let’s just say this one almost hit all my favorite beats… but there were a few moments that pulled me out. First off, the power imbalance and extended emotional denial—not really my thing. The whole “break up because we’re scared of feelings and then get back together” trope isn’t a dealbreaker, but it doesn’t wow me either.

I loved these characters. Getting to see Agkar again after the last book was so satisfying—he’s gone from emotionally closed-off soldier to a man genuinely considering a different kind of life, and I was rooting for him the whole way. His personal growth, especially learning from Nera in book two (even if it wasn’t romantic), adds so much depth here. And I loved how this book explored gender roles in somewhat subtle, but really meaningful ways. A gruff warrior deciding maybe domestic life could actually make him happy? Yes, please.

Now, I wish the dom/sub vibes had been explored more. There was so much potential with the power dynamic and the bossy FMC, but it stayed surface-level. Also… I didn’t love that she put hands on him during an intimate moment without clear consent. Yes, he seemed into it, but it still felt off. That scene could’ve really benefitted from a bit more discussion and intention.

Zirelle (our FMC) is an absolute force—headstrong, determined, driven. But I wanted more why. She drinks heavily, and the only explanation we get is that her parents died. She also talks about sacrificing so much for her role in the guard… but what exactly did she give up? There’s an emotional gap that could’ve made her even more compelling if it was filled in a bit.

Predictable? Yes. But in that comforting way. If you’ve read this series, you know the blueprint: meet → tension → plot twist → baby → HEA. But every couple feels unique, and the emotional arcs hit where they need to. I especially liked how this book handled parenting and partnership—Agkar taking joy in staying home with the baby while Zirelle continues to chase her career was a lovely (and rare!) touch.

TL;DR A wholesome, trope-filled ride with heart, heat, and just enough grit to keep you turning pages. If you’re into grumpy/grumpy, emotionally scarred warriors finding peace, and strong women who won’t compromise—this one’s for you.

TW: Authority (Captain and lieutenant power dynamic), thievery, drugs, knives, stabbing, trapped, violence, assassination (off page), sandstorms, hostage situation, mentions of slavery, alcoholism, accidental pregnancy and childbirth (off page)
👉 Captain of the City Guard Human FMC
👉 Lieutenant of the City Guard Orc MMC
👉 Close Proximity
👉 Hate to Love

Lieutenant Agkar has been heartbroken and disgraced in the most public way has decided to transfer into the desert of Hazrain to be a part of the city guard. Captain Zirelle Mastair is his superior officer and they start off despising each other. Captain Mastair has a tight operation where we micromanages the whole city and deals with her stress with alcohol. Lieutenant Agkar, coming from the frontier where the trollkin are taking over the human lands, struggle to understand the new power dynamics with himself and his human superior. The two end up teamed together to put a stop at the group of fugitives and they find themselves at the mercy of their mating bond.

Congratulations on the newest installment of Trollkin Lovers! I actually didn’t know there were two other books when I signed up for this ARC but they are all not long and I read all three in one day. Reading back to back, it was interesting seeing the writing improvement as well as writing issues I had with the first book, being resolved in the second book. The world building improved and while I had some issues with power dynamics between the two, overall? Pretty cute story and I love how the characters were able to resolved their own issues before coming together. The character growth is pretty good and there is also a very good healing journey for both of them too.

~ STORY 📝 ~

Like the two first books of the series: we have a short book that manages to have an amazing story, lots of angst (maybe even more than before), and lots of smut 🙌🔥

I love world-building and how we see more and more of it as the series progresses.

~ ROMANCE & MAIN CHARACTERS 💖 ~

They're my fav people of the series. I love them to bits.

I love how relatable Zirielle is with her struggle. I love how strong she is. I love that she has short hair too, it's rare hahaha.

Also obviously I love to read about a black FMC, even if it's fantasy and that skin color doesn't really matter for the story, it matters to me. Representation and all. ✨💖

I love how patient and caring Agkar is for her, and how he's willing to be everything she needs. 🥰

~ SPICE 🌶️ ~

A lot of detailed graphic scenes and s£x fantasies that came early on and are pretty steady through the book. 🔥

No particular kinks in sight (except for the monster that wants to impregnate his human mate, of course 🤷🏽‍♀️)

Review:
A good installment to the series, but I still feel a little weird about the fact that there was a war between humans and Trollkin in the last book, including humans being shown as slaves to the Trollkin. And in Fact the MMC was in command of slaves in the last book. So again the feelings aren’t how to come to terms with that. However, I liked the romance between these 2 characters, they are both strong and determined in their own way. When it finally came down to choosing a family or duty, well I appreciated the decision that they made in the end.

Quotes:
- “Zirelle,” he snarls, curling his tusks upward, “you must know now that you are mine.”

- He’s right. The link between us is tightening around me just as it’s closing in around him, and it feels like we could very well merge into a single being.

- “I’m going to fill you up. I’m going to put my seed so deep inside you that you will carry my whelps. You are mine.”

- As fiercely as I protest, the idea of sharing that with Agkar brings a little bird to life in my chest. That would be a good existence, I think, to love my orc.

18 chapters packed with a solid story that had me hooked from the very start.
It all began with 'Hatred at first sight,' a fiery introduction
that quickly evolved into a closeness neither Agkar nor Zirelle saw coming.
And when it's a fated mate, one taste is never enough.

The push and pull between them left me emotionally drained, feeling every ounce of Zirelle's struggle.
Agkar's ability to see beyond the walls Zirelle had built reminded me of Sia's song 'Helium'—
sometimes even Superwoman needs Superman's soul.

It wasn't an easy journey; heartaches and distance were hurdles to overcome
before Zirelle could fully accept Agkar's place in her life.
Yet, the wait was undeniably worth it.
I'm a sucker for a happy ever after, and after all they've been through, these two truly deserved it.

The cave scene was scorching, the first taste of their "needs" leaving me giggling and breathless.
The part where Agkar wanted to make it right for Zirelle, he savors every part of her
while Zirelle was desperate for "hard loving" was nothing short of intoxicating.
This story had me captivated, and I loved every steamy and heartache moment of it.

4 terrific 🌟's for Capturing the Orc's Heart💖🔥

Agkar left his job in the last book when Nera turned him down because her fated mate was another. He ends up is a desert city as the Lieutenant to a human Captain. Not just any human Captain but a female . a female that is completely infuriating! Zirelle was born and raised in her beautiful desert city. Her whole life is being a let of the city guard. Her own parents were both soldiers in the guard and she wants to make them proud. When she and Agkar first meet personalities clash and sparks fly! On a mission they have to put there animosity aside when they are trapped in a sand storm. What they both realize is that their so called animosity is pent up attraction and then their passion soars! This universe just keeps me coming back for more I love it. The forbidden human/Trollkin relationship just makes the story so much more compelling. And with each story more of what the world was like for both races before the wars started comes to light. I can't wait for more in this series!! Highly recommend💖🔥🌟💖🔥🔥🌟💖💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟

I have *such* mixed feelings about this book. Like on is own, as a Trollkin Lovers story, 5/5, loved it, perfect blend of pushing and pulling, loved the slightly non traditional HEA. Gold star reading.

But. BUT. Taken in combination with Healing the Orcs Heart, which I feel like your should do as it is the whole set up for this one, boyo do I have issues here. Do people who keep house slaves deserve a redemption arc? And if they get a redemption arc, shouldn't they have to at some point acknowledge just how horrendous their past behaviour has been? I wanted a reckoning. I wanted Agkar to feel an appropriate degree of horror about what he did, not just personal sorrow that the human he enslaved never learned to love him back. Hell, I wanted him to properly acknowledge that what he'd been feeling for Nera had not ever been love, rather a gross abuse of power he should never have had.

So yeah, that's not there. And that's why I'm leaving this starless, because I honest to goodness really enjoyed this story, adored Agkar and his arc, thought Zirelle was a charming FMC. It was only when I finished it that I set back and thought WOAH that's some stuff to be missing.

This had a lot of the things I’ve been enjoying from this (very fun) series:
✨ an “oh no this can’t be happening” fated mates situation
✨ human-orc size difference,
✨ overcoming prejudices in a society where humans and orcs are supposed to hate each other

And it also had a ‘she’s his boss, and wants to be called sir 😉’ element that was just delightful.

But this wasn’t a five star read for me (like the other books in this series have been) for totally personal, not the book’s fault reasons. Because it was missing two things that were in the other books that I (completely irrationally) expected here: a language barrier (she was already fluent in his language this time) and an anti-war message.

And rather than the anti-war theme I’d been hoping for, we got two police officer MCs who were just as corrupt as they were overworked. And idk, I’ve been in too much of an ACAB mindset to be into stories about cops torturing and extrajudicially killing property crime suspects, you know?

Still having fun with this series though so I’m optimistic about the next one!

I loved to see Lieutenant Agkar again. I didn't realize in the last book that he was truly in love with Nera, I thought it was just an infatuation and possessiveness making him fight for her. It was a bit funny how quickly he went from disrespecting and dismissing his superior officer to lusting after her. I was glad that he gave space to Zirelle when she was overwhelmed with their relationship. He was a thoughtful and kind orc.
Zirelle was an interesting character, so driven and dedicated to her work that it took over her entire life and the only way for her to turn off her overworked brain was to drink. The fact that she was doing her job perfectly and yet felt inadequate made me sad for her. I was a bit disappointed in her when she.
It was unexpected that .
