**ARC review** Opinions are my own
This is my first book from Lyonne Riley so I am unfamiliar with the Trollkin universe. However, this can be read as a standalone, and Riley does a fantastic job of quickly explaining and setting up the world and its history.
4/5 stars—💯 will reread
Zirelle is a badass and I love the reverse positions of power. He comes in as her Lieutenant and she, the Captain. She is also a POC which is always wonderful and refreshing to read about, even in a monster romance.
There are multiple POVs, which I absolutely loved. The insight into Agkar’s mind was vulnerable and heart-warming, whereas Zirelle’s thoughts were a little darker and more deeply traumatic, in my opinion. I enjoyed the insight into their individual histories and how they came to be where they are, which inevitably adds more meaning to the journey of how they come together, and learn to stay together.
The spice was fantastic; typical monster smut that I never tire of. There is a breeding trope in this, which I’m also here for. He definitely falls faster for her first, although she’s stubborn so it takes her a minute to leave denial-land, only to realize that she needs him just as much.
My favorite thing about this novel:
She’s a career woman and he knew from the get-go that she didn’t necessarily want a family. She goes off and does her thing while he steps into the role of main caretaker of their child while she travels for work. I wasn’t expecting this level of detail in the epilogue, but I fucking loved it. I know this isn’t explicitly pointed out in other novels or epilogues but the fact that Riley called it out really warmed my heart. It just made them SO real to me ❤️🥹
My small quips:
—While this is an enemies to lovers trope, they weren’t enemies for very long. On the one hand, I’m glad that the story was fast paced and we got to the meat of story asap, but on the other, I also would have liked to have a little more angst and banter between them.
—Zirelle opens up the “more than coworkers” door pretty quickly. One minute they’re at each others’ throats and the next she’s hitting on him. It gave me a bit of whiplash.
My favorite quotes:
“Then, out of nowhere, she hits me across the face.” **I DIED**
“I burrow my face into her perfect hair. She smells like everything I’ve needed, like the missing piece of my heart.”
“Oh, do I loathe this plan.”
“She was never destined for mothering, I know that. I knew it the moment I bonded with her, and even then, I had accepted my role.“
“Sometimes it (Zirelle’s work) takes her away for days, even weeks at a time, and it’s just me and Keza exploring the beautiful, sweet-smelling city together.”
Note to the author: what is UP with the carving of the two faces?!?! I NEED TO KNOW.
