What is this book about?
Very few people don’t know the name ‘Bill Gates’. Millions of students aspire to be the next Bill Gates. He is famous for being a billionaire but among the students who don’t like to study, he is famous for being a drop-out: he is their messiah. However any self-respecting person would agree that this concept that Bill Gates dropped out because he could not or did not like to study and despite being a dumb-ass managed to create Microsoft after failing to study, which is the popular understanding of Bill Gates, is a total delusion.

A lazy bone student cites Bill Gates as his or her idol and either drops out or does poorly in studies. There are more people who have destroyed their lives with this wrong and wishful concept of Bill Gates than people who have learned then followed the correct and accurate ways Bill Gates took.

It is sad that such a great person with such great potential teachings to the world will be known in the annals of popular history as the drop out who became a billionaire. Alas that is his fate in the quick dopamine seeking society of the 2000’s.

Come learn the truth
Those who need to read this book won’t. If you are reading my review now, you may not need to read further because you know the truth. However I urge you to dispel the delusion of pop culture in at least the kids around you.

So how did Bill Gates succeed?
Dearlove distills the answer in 10 ways:
1 Be in the right place at the right time
2 Fall in love with the technology
3 Take no prisoners
4 Hire very smart people
5 Learn to survive
6 Don’t expect any thanks
7 Assume the visionary position
8 Cover all the bases
9 Build a byte-sized business
10 Never ever take your eyes off the ball

Lets go into more details:

1 Be in the right place at the right time:
Bill Gates was a nerd meaning he studied excessively. By the age of 12 he had already learned more about computers than a software engineer would even today. Then he got an opportunity to write a program for IBM and then the rest is history. The point here is the was ‘ready’ when luck came to him.

2 Fall in love with the technology
Bill Gates is a learning machine. He keeps himself up-to-date with knowledge in this sector or any others that matter to it. This enables him to come up with the best ideas and strategies.

3 Take no prisoners
Bill Gates is a cunning and ruthless person behind this nerdy looks. He is so smart he can calculate any deals he makes and any concessions he has give into multiple future scenarios making a fool of even the shrewdest CEO’s of his time. In this way he was able to monopolize the ‘operating system’ industry by heartless competitiveness ready to destroy strategically any one coming his way. This takes immense level of brains and studies.

4 Hire very smart people
Agreed Bill Gates dropped out but his company Microsoft only hires those from pass out with the highest grades from the top colleges. This has proved key in his success.

5 Learn to survive
Learn or die is Bill Gates philosophy. He read voraciously. Thus he can out-think any of his competitors. He makes mistakes but with his vast knowledge and capacity to learn, comes out from the hole as a winner.

6 Don’t expect any thanks
Being so successful as Bill Gates requires the ability to absorb the hatred from the people around you.

7 Assume the visionary position
Bill Gates dropped out for many reasons among them, being that no university can teach him what he needs to learn: being a visionary. He self-taught himself being a visionary in every stage of his career.

8 Cover all the bases
Bill Gates is the ultimate multi-tasker. He and his company handles multiple projects at the same time so as not to miss any trends.

9 Build a byte-sized business
This is how Bill Gates to structure his companies: small units rather than a big complex system. So he has many divisions and it is reported that he creates one new divisions per week.

10 Never ever take your eyes off the ball
Again Bill Gates is always studying the world around him for any threats that can turn him into a dinosaur like IBM and the Apple after Steve Jobs was fired.

conclusion

The world always changes in terms of the overall concepts about success that the majority of people adapt.

Before 2000: life is hard and we must work hard , study hard, enjoy within limits.

Between 2000 and 2022: life belongs to the smartest, strongest, fastest, so work smart, study smart. The objective of money is to enjoy so enjoy in every way you can.

After 2022: life is too uncertain to work hard, let alone study, we need to enjoy as much as we can NOW.

Of course there is no scientific basis of my timeline, not even citations but only personal experiences. However I believe that you might not totally disagree with this framework.

The people of all age groups are going in a collision course with great disappointments within a decade or two.

Having started from the USA, consumerism, has now devoured the entire world, thanks to social media. Before the damage was limited with the effect from Hollywood movies, now it is 24/7 in the hands of nearly 5 billions people of this world.

This is a grim view of the world I see and that you might not share but the silver lining is that I predict that the world after 2030 will be very different after the above collision. It will be the beginning of the ‘true golden age of enlightenment’ .

Why did I rate this book 4/5?
Computer in every home in every desk- Gate's big idea.
Bill says he went to Harvard to learn from the smartest people and he was disappointed and he had to drop out.
They say the world changed when Microsoft's stock valuation overtook that of GM.
Microsoft attributes its success to these fators:
-A longterm approach
-Results orientation
-Teamwork and individual drive
-Continuous customer feedback
The secrets to Microsoft's success from its CEO are;
1.Be at the right place at the right time
2.Fall in love with the technology
3.Take no prisoners-Gates is a fierce competitor
4.Hire very smart people. 'High IQ people' is Microsoft term for the very bright people
5.Learn to survive-Gates believes, the only way to avoid the same mistake twice-his competitors arent so careful
6.Dont expect any thanks-fame and infamy are never far apart. You dont expect to be the richest man in the world without making some enemies
7.Assume the visionary position-Bill Gates is a new type of business leader. over the years,he has repeatedly shown that he is the closest thing the computer industry has to a seer
8.Cover all bases-a key ellement in Microsoft's success is its ability to manage a large number of projests simultaneously
9.Build a byte-sized business- relative to its stock market valuation, Microsoft remains a relatively small company
10.Never ever take your eye off the ball

I read a post about the strategies behind Bill Gates’ success, and it reminded me of a guide I found on Swiss GmbH . While Gates’ approach focuses on innovation and smart hiring, that guide helped me grasp the practical side of setting up a strong legal and financial foundation for a business, which is just as crucial. Combining those insights gave me a clearer path to build something sustainable and focused.

I recently finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and was blown away by how authentically it captures Christopher’s perspective. The storytelling is so unique, blending mystery with deep emotional insight.
