It is 1880, in the Opera House in Paris. Everybody is talking about the Phantom of the Opera, the ghost that lives somewhere under the Opera House. The Phantom is a man in black clothes. He is a body without a head, he is a head without a body. He has a yellow face, he has no nose, he has black holes for eyes. Everybody is afraid of the Phantom - the singers, the dancers, the directors, the stage workers . . .

But who has actually seen him?

About the author

Jennifer Bassett has been a teacher, teacher trainer, editor, and materials writer, and has taught in England, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. She is the Series Editor of the Oxford Bookworms Library, and has written more than twenty original and retold stories for the series, including The Phantom of the Opera, One-Way Ticket, The President's Murderer, and William Shakespeare. Two of her adaptations, Rabbit-Proof Fence and Love Among the Haystacks, have won Language Learner Literature Awards, and three of her other titles have been finalists for the Awards. She has created a new sub-series called Bookworms World Stories, which are collections of short stories written in English from around the world. She has also written original stories for the English Today Readers and Storylines series. Jennifer is series co-adviser, with H.G. Widdowson, of the Oxford Bookworms Collection, volumes of unadapted short stories for advanced learners.

Por culpa de los edits de las películas pensaba que este libro iba a ser muy diferente, y ahora estoy triste :(

Hablando de la edición adaptada, macho, ¿de qué me sirve el puto glosario si no me indicas las palabras que me vas a describir?

Quitando eso, se me ha hecho medio fácil de entender, he tirado de traductor para algunas palabras concretas evidentemente, pero el resto bien.

Does it really have ghosts? Everybody in the Opera House was afraid of the phantom, forced them to keep Box 5 and gave money to him. He was Christine's music teacher, her angel of music, he loves her, and wanted Christine's love...but Christine had a lover Raoul. what a ugly, poor, unhappy man who was live under the ground, nobody loves him neither his mother, he just wanted a woman's love...Christine's true kiss made the phantom set her free and live together with her lover forever.. while reading this story i felt sorry for Erik, what a poor unhappy man....

The mysteriously of the story attracted me and the presence of the Persian man was strange in Paris. Two co-workers from Iran that have been going to France. Why these two men have gone to Paris in those days?

I do not like the "Persian" Term to refer to Iran because that ignores other nations like Kurd, Balooch, Arab, Turk, and etc.

I picked this up for free, not realizing it was a short version, aimed at English reading beginners. Nonetheless I read it and now the memory of the story is refreshed in my mind. Even though this book is really short, the dark illustrations and the subject matter itself help create the spooky atmosphere that this work is famous for. I do feel inspired to read the original version now. (I wonder I the phantom has any redeeming qualities in it - from what I just read he seems like a horrible person. Troubled, sure, but horrible)

Este me ha resultado mas entretenido que los anteriores graduados ( también la temática me gustaba más)
Este tiene menos vocabulario específico, que en el de Shakespeare si aparecía bastante.
Ahora quiero leer la obra completa, pero lo haré en español, o tendré que esperar un par de cursos más.

I liked this version in terms of order of events, but felt it was rushed. Even when writing for younger readers (or readers for whom English is not their primary language), it is beneficial to slow down and explain certain events, such as why Erik is so violent or why Christine decides to kiss him. If young readers are old enough to read about death and murder, they are old enough for a conversation about pity and fear. It is an excellent introductory retelling, however, and I recommend it for those learning to read English.

I read this adapted and simpler version (suitable for young readers) when i was 13 because we studied this book for literature class. I fell in love with it right away. Jennifer Bassett did a good job in adapting it with the choice of words used suitable for young readers to understand the story and without excluding some important plots in the original book.

It is an interesting story. I'm curious that if the phantom has really dead. It is obviously that people love face much more than talent at the first sight or always. Even the film, it chose the actor much more handsome than waht the book described.

The story of the phantom of the opera..
This is a beautiful story in every sense of the word, I read the book in both languages (Arabic & English), watched the movie, and watched the opera show, and what a wonderful show!

All the details are a beauty in itself, and the texts, songs and special melodies, all take you to another world

As for the novel or the book, it is simple and light, and it tells a sequential story of a ghost that the reader falls in love with, compassionate in his condition, as your heart yearns for the condition of the heroine Christine, and her young lover Raoul

The interrelation of the story and the events, between the book, the movie, and the theater are all very consistent and close, but the end of the movie and theater is different from the end of the book

In my opinion, the end of the theater and the movie is much more beautiful than the end of the book. The story is sad in itself and makes your heart race to resent the ghost. There is no need for a tragic end, so I loved the end of the theater and the movie more.

A beautiful story, and a nice imagination that sometimes reflects the reality of the situation..

¡¡¡¡MI LIBRO FAVORITO!!!
No soy de leer cosas de terror o misterio pero este libro lo vale. Simplemente perfecto, me encanta la vibra que transmite, como logra que el lector conecte con la historia a tal punto de sentir lastima por el "fantasma" todo es maravilloso.
Lo tuve que leer bastante rápido ya que tenía que elegir un libro y realizar un resumen para entregarlo. Tarde un poco buscando un libro que pudiese llamar mi atención y vaya que no me arrepiento de haberlo leído. Es mi libro favorito desde el año pasado.
Gracias a Jennifer por semejante obra.

I`ve heard this title many many times.
So i was intrigued to read it, and since is a quick reads one, it allows you to understand the story on the go, Erik, a man, ugly to look at, falls in love wtih a opera singer. But she is in love with someone else, awhile the theatre is going thru management changes, the phantom feels.... threaten and things start to happen in the theatre.
A classical, intriguing book.
