Flying for Jesus

Rate this book
Why would an international banker retire early, at the peak of his career, to fly as a volunteer missionary over the Brazilian Amazon?
And where did he get the money to donate a two million dollar airplane?
He might be running drugs from Colombia or smuggling gems from the rich rocks of Minas Gerais. Many Brazilians believed the American missionaries were CIA spies.
There had to be a reason.

Lee Carver is once again failing at retirement, a hybrid author in every sense: fiction and nonfiction, traditionally and independently published. She also does freelance editing, formatting, and print book and e-book uploads as well as being a Stephen Minister, singing alto in the choir, crocheting with Prayer Shawl Ministry, and playing piano, among other activities. Married forty-nine years to a very supportive man, they have two adult children and five grandchildren.

During her husband's international career, Lee lived and reared their two children in Greece, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Indonesia, Brazil, and Spain. She has visited about 49 countries, settings which become material in her novels. After her husband's retirement, they served as volunteer missionaries in the Brazilian Amazon, where he used his military training as a pilot. The Carvers have settled in Fort Worth, where they remain active in aviation and community missionary concerns.

This book is about the author and her husband's missionary work in the Amazon. It is a fascinating read, but it isn't told from either point of view; it is more from a journalistic viewpoint. I have met the author, and I would never have guessed that she and her husband did all this with his job and followed his retirement with missionary work.

There are many touching stories, and we (my book club) wondered how world events impacted what they were doing, such as 9-11, and how that situation might have impacted their travel and purchasing the plane to use in the missionary work.

A fascinating true story of missionary calling and work. God still does amazing things ... and this story has inspired me to look into short-term missions in the Amazon. I’d love for my kids to get a look at what life is like outside their insulated bubble. Much of the world doesn’t live like we do.

This is an incredible true story about Darrel and Lee how they were called to serve as missionary in Amazon, Brazil. No, they weren't clergy, Darrel was an executive banker. The most impressive thing about them is that they pray for any situations. I just discovered on Wednesday that Lee wrote this book. Both of them are dedicated members at my church but keeps very low key, so I had no ideas. Today (Sunday) I invited myself to sit by them and expressed amazement and excitement over their international living prior to missionary work, and Darrel smiled saying "We just prayed". This is only 185 page book so get a copy and read it. You will not regret it.
