SEUIL Par sa large audience, le cinéma constitue un témoignage privilégié des sensibilités populaires, des adhésions et des rejets politiques d'une époque donnée. Souvent, à l'insu du réalisateur, le film de fiction en dit plus que le documentaire.
Le cinéma est aussi un des instruments d'élaboration des mémoires collectives : le film historique raconte le passé en le posant en concurrent effronté des agents « agréés » et institutionnels.
À travers une centaine d'?uvres du cinéma occidental, l'auteur analyse les modes de représentations audiovisuelles des grandes questions qui ont animé et bouleversé le XXe siècle : la formation des démocraties, la déclaration de la Première Guerre mondiale, la naissance du communisme, l'avènement des crises économiques, la montée du fascisme et du nazisme, les affrontements de la Guerre froide et du colonialisme ainsi que la décolonisation...

About the author

Shlomo Sand is professor of history at Tel Aviv University and author of the controversial book The Invention of the Jewish People (Verso Books, 2009). His main areas of teaching are nationalism, film as history and French intellectual history.

Sand was born to Polish Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. His parents had Communist and anti-imperialist views and refused to receive compensations from Germany for their suffering during the Second World War. Sand spent his early years in a displaced persons camp, and moved with the family to Jaffa in 1948. He was expelled from high school at the age of sixteen, and only completed his bagrut following his military service. He eventually left the Union of Israeli Communist Youth (Banki) and joined the more radical, and anti-Zionist, Matzpen in 1968. Sand resigned from Matzpen in 1970 due to his disillusionment with the organisation.

He declined an offer by the Israeli Communist Party Rakah to be sent to do cinema studies in Poland, and in 1975 Sand graduated with a BA in History from Tel Aviv University. From 1975 to 1985, after winning a scholarship, he studied and later taught in Paris, receiving an MA in French History and a PhD for his thesis on "George Sorel and Marxism". Since 1982, Sand has taught at Tel Aviv University as well as at the University of California, Berkeley and the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris.

Tiene algunos fallos como analizar demasiado superficialmente algunos eventos históricos o dejar muy de lado el cine no occidental, pero lo he disfrutado tanto que se lo puedo perdonar. El epígrafe metodológico del final me ha encantado, y los capítulos dedicados a la evolución en la representación del Holocausto y a la revolución rusa son geniales. Muy recomendable.

ספר מלומד ביותר המראה באופן משכנע ומרתק כיצד ההיסטוריה השפיעה על הקולנוע "ההיסטורי" בתכניו , בביקורתו, ואף ביכולתו או אי-יכולתו לומר בתקופה ובמקום מסויימים מה שרצה לומר. מעבר לאוצר הסרטים שנחשף לפני, גיליתי דברים רבים שלא ידעתי לגבי תפיסות והשקפות שונות של עמים מסויימים לגבי עצמם ואופני הצינזור החיצוניים והמנטליים שלעיתים נמשכו עשורים ולעיתים מעולם לא הסתיימו באמת. גם שמחתי לגלות שלמרות דעותיו הפוליטיות העכשוויות של המחבר, בספר מוקדם יחסית זה שלו קיימת הוגנות בלתי משוחדת פוליטית לצד כזה או אחר של המפה הפוליטית. הספר היה מקבל ממני את הכוכב החמישי לולא היו בערך כ-50 טעויות בספר (טייפוז, שנים של סרטים מסויימים) וכן לו היה המחבר מוסיף גם פרקים המתמקדים בייצוגים פמיניסטיים, מיגדריים ו"גזעיים"

Un extraordinario ensayo sobre la relación entre el cine y la historia y cómo el cambio en las representaciones nos ayuda a entender nuestro pasado. Destaca por encima de todos el capítulo dedicado a la Shoah.
