‘The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want.’ - Ben Stein

Israeli author/attorney/economist Dr. Yaniv Zaid is known to many audiences as, “Dr. Persuasion,” so skilled is he as a consultant and lecturer, teaching others how to improve their marketing, presentation, sales, and persuasion skills. Now he presents his thoughts in book form – PERSUADE AND INFLUENCCE ANY AUDIENCE, CREATIVE MARKETING, and this valuable book PUBLIC SPEAKING.

Yaniv scoops up his readership in his Preface where he states, ‘My starting point is that everyone has rhetorical, public speaking and leadership skills and my objective is to expose you to methods and rules that will improve and refine these skills. The ability to speak in public and to address and control an audience is not an innate competency. Everyone is able to learn some basic rules and to make use of them. Rhetoric abilities, of any standard, can be significantly improved. I can assure you that by properly employing the rules and methods described in this book, all of you will enhance your ability. Whoever is charismatic by nature, will be able to specialize and to achieve very high standards of public speaking, of turn of phrase and of persuasion skills. Those who at present suffer from stage fright, or those who loathe arguments, and those who always feel lost and inferior in a heated discussion, will be able to considerably enhance their skills by making use of this book and learn how to best communicate any message in any area and to anyone. This book is intended to assist you, the readers, in any kind of discussion, lecture or argument, anytime, on any subject and in front of any audience. Many examples are described in the book, which may be adapted to any situation that requires speaking in public, be it in front of a single person, a group or even when raising a glass at a family gathering. The book is intended for the use of all kinds of public speakers and persuaders, like for example parents confronting their children, teachers trying to persuade the Ministry to improve their salaries and also to an expert in his field (an expert in his field is a person who presents a subject in which he is an expert to a group of persons, for example a military commander, a teacher in school, a youth leader or a university lecturer), detailing their knowledge.’

From this jumping off point Yaniv takes us through Public Speaking and Persuasion as a Tool for Daily Use, Preparing The Speech, Composing The “Definition”, Selecting The “Clash” Point, Deciding On The Arguments, Controlling Time, How To Become An Orderly Speaker, Using Humor as Part of The Address, How to Captivate The Audience, How to Properly Answer Questions, How to Effectively Counter The Adversary’s Arguments, How to Handle Disturbances, Appearance and Posture when Facing The Audience, What to Avoid During Public Speaking, and Summarizing The Speech. He closes with the statement, ‘When summarizing the speeches of all the speakers, it is preferable that the largest amount of time be dedicated to summarize the speaker’s own speech. This creates among the audience the feeling that the speaker was the one who said the most and that he had been one of the most important and dominant speakers during the discussion.’

Yaniv proves why he has gained stature in the arena of public speaking. There is something for everyone who poses a ‘speech’.

This was one of my most intriguing read. How to captivate audience and how to appear persuasive.

At first, I just wanna learn a new stuff about how to public speaking but the more I delve into the topic, the more it appears that this book offer more on the spectrum of debate and framework of an argument instead of the tone of the argument and how you could build up on that really strongly.

Good (average)

It was a good book which gave me good tips on how to properly estructure a debate. I did learn new things but I was expecting to get more information on how to overcome fear of public speaking along with other good practices, that’s why I’m not granting more stars.
