The Contemplative way of life is a rich and ancient tradition that has passed from generation to generation, and was in recent times brought to prominence by Thomas Merton. This work presents the classical teaching of the early fathers, from Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, Catherine of Siena and Francis de Sales, down to the still-hidden mystics of our own day...For the reader who wishes to understand this spirituality THE CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE is a pure and authentic statement of the essence of this way of life.
“Meeting Pere Thomas is meeting a man so full of the Spirit of God that facts and figures are only distractions. He has become a living flame of God's Love.” –Henri J.M. Nouwen
“It was while listening to Father Thomas that I received my first graces in prayer. It was as if Jesus was transforming my heart and leading me into a new and deeper love of the Father. This new inner life linked me obviously very deeply to Father Thomas, but also gave me a great inner freedom; it helped me to become myself in a new and deeper way.” –Jean Vanier
Thomas Philippe, OP, author of the Fire of Contemplation, was considered by many, a modern spiritual master. While teaching in France and at the Angelicum in Rome he also was in much demand as a preacher of retreats and spiritual conferences. He founded L'Eau Vive, an international center for the pursuit of wisdom, seeking to integrate philosophy, theology, and the spiritual life. His vision and friendship with Jean Vanier inspired the birth of the L'Arche communities, an international ministry to the disadvantaged, for whom he was chaplain until his death in 1993.
This book is based on notes taken at a retreat given by Fr. Thomas Philippe, OP. At times, it feels "choppy," as one would expect under these conditions. Secondly, it is a book originally written in French, so again, the reader can occasionally feel somewhat "removed" from Fr. Philippe's direct thoughts or intentions.
All this being said, I felt the book was sound and a good introduction to what it means to BE "contemplative." I am not Catholic, but felt it was an interesting book.
