Downton Tabby

Rate this book
A parody of the beloved worldwide television phenomenon Downton Abbey—with cats.Welcome to Downton Tabby Here, the aristocrats of the animal kingdom dwell in stately splendor, sleeping, grooming, sleeping some more, and being fed by their downstairs cats, unaware that their way of life—providing work for others—is about to be swept away by the tides of history...and runaway cars. The fur will fly. This humorous parody provides essential information for preserving their Golden Age, including How to Keep a Secret at Downton Tabby, How to Argue with Lord Grimalkin About His Most Deeply Held Beliefs, and some Uninvited but Necessary Words from the Dowager.

I’ll come right out and admit it now. I am not a fan of Downton Abbey. I tried watching it when it first appeared. I love Upstairs, Downstairs after all. But the phrases rip off and saw it coming, keep popping up. I don’t even watch it and I know what it is going to happen. Yet when I was at Joseph Fox bookstores (a bookstore where you must buy more than two books) this was close to the register. I picked it up for my mom who loves cats and Downton Abbey. I read it on my way home – it really is a quick read.

It’s Downton Abbey with cats. This means the dowager’s snide remarks have to do with voles among other things. Newspapers are put to interesting usages. Place settings are cleverly arranged to have more than one glass for milk. It is just the right amount of stupid and funny.

Such a silly little thing. Barely worth going to the trouble of obtaining a copy. But, I love Downton Abbey, and I am a cat person. What was I to do? Plus, I giggled at least 3 times. That means it was worth it, right? :)

What a hysterical, cute parody of one of my favorite TV shows: Downton Abbey! I laughed my way through this entire book and it wasn't just a chuckle here and there, I was on the floor with laughter at times! I read some of the passages out loud to my husband as we lounged by the pool on July 4th and even he was cracking up. The author works for "Real Time," Bill Maher's show, so you know it's got the the funny vibe. I didn't realize the author was associated with that show and others like Letterman, just to name a few. Anyway, it's so cute and the artwork/cartoonish pictures of cats doing the impossible will charm the socks of you!

I love Downton Abbey and I ADORE cats, so Chris Kelly's recently released parody was a no-brainer for me. This slim volume condenses three seasons of the popular costume soap, following the upstairs and downstairs antics of turn-of-the-century England's feline population through the sinking of the Titanic to the aftermath of the Great War. The double-page photographic spreads, reenacting key scenes from the series with a distinctly catty thread is worth the purchase price alone (I'm particularly fond of Mattmew Clowder and Thomas Farel -- the latter the "handsome but evil First Footcat" -- preparing to dine on rat in the Verdun trenches -- it's not as gross as it sounds, ha!). Peppered between the photos and history "lessons" are sections like "Uninvited But Necessary Words from the Dowager" and "How to Keep a Secret at Downton Tabby" (i.e., why bother?). A cute and clever Downton pastiche, Downton Tabby is a nicely-designed, humorous read sure to bring a smile to the face of cat lovers and costume drama aficionados alike.

If you love cats (I do) and are a fan of Downton Abbey this seems the perfect fit. The publisher's blurb "Let the fur fly" and the premise of an aristoCAT British family drew me right in.

I enjoyed the graphic aspect of this as well as matching the personalities and traits to the tv characters.

An easy read, not quite living up to my expectations but worth the time it took to read.

This is a silly and catty little parody ... as intended. For any DA fans, why not indulge yourself. And as an opining side note: Poor Lady Edith, ahem, I mean, Lady Etcetera (name says it all, right?), even in this tale of tails she never catches a break ... compared to the strawberry portion of Neopolitan ice cream ...

So this is kind of a gag gift type of book for people who like cats and have watched the Downton Abbey series. Otherwise skip it. There were a few chuckles at the expense of Edwardian England.

Your favorite Downton Abbey characters are here, but in feline form. Mrs. Catmore, the cook, has trouble seeing, and gives Laisy, her helper, the wrong ingredients. Matthmew, the heir apparent, can drive a car, but not well. Catson, the butler, does his best to keep everyone in line downstairs even while Vibrissa Clowder, the Dowager Catness of Grimalkin, regales everyone upstairs with her pearls of wisdom. This little tome is packed with pleasure and sheer delight, with amusing illustrations and witty writing. Feline fanciers and Downton Abbey fans will especially enjoy it.

This was a belated birthday gift from a fellow Downton Abbey fan, and it definitely gave me a chuckle. It also makes you realise how scarily similar British Aristocrats are to cats!

It's a fun and quirky read that will make you laugh and want to pick up the Downton Abbey series again.

Birthday Book #37 from my friend Mary. I love Mary. I love cats. I loved Downton Abbey. But this book was sort of stupid. Even the puns on the names (Catson, Matthmew, Mrs. Catmore) just weren't that funny.

Sam tytuł Downton Tabby to gra słów: tabby to z angielskiego pręgowany kot.

No cóż.

Cora Crawley, hrabina Crawley, w wersji kociej. W kąpieli. I kocia O'Brien.

Book number 19 for 2023.

Yet another benefit of my part-time library aide job. I never would have known that this book existed. I was standing at the information desk, one day, when the person doing shelving that day brought this up to us. I immediately grabbed it and checked it out.

I'm not at all sure why this is catalogued as non-fiction. It is a straight-up parody of Downton Abbey, as one might guess, with names like Robert "Bobcat" Clowder, the Earl of Grimalkin (instead of Crowley), Korat Clowder (his American wife), Lady Minxy Clowder (I assume this is Mary)(the pretty daughter), Lady Serval Clowder (the prettier daughter), and Lady Etcetera Clowder (the other daughter). And let us not forget Vibrissa Clowder, the Dowager Catness of Grimalkin.

There are, of course, servants, as well. And, in my opinion, the author does a pretty job of the story, stretching from 1910-1929. All in only 80 pages. It is quite humorous and has quotes from the Dowager Catness interspersed between chapters.

"Of course cats can speak. We're just not speaking to you!"

"If you didn't want me to leap on your head and cling to your face with my claws, you should not have invited me to a place where there's thunder and lightning."

"I'm not 'judging' you. That's far too active a word for it."

And so on.

There are a couple of pages detailing how to interpret a cat's tail movements.

It's a quick read (obviously) and quite entertaining, especially if one has seen all the episodes and both movies of the subject TV show. And it has a really cute cover.

An amusing parody of the popular show as seen through the eyes of the aristo-cats of early 20th century England. We follow the scandals, heartbreaks, and yarn entanglements of the Lord Grimalkin's family and their downstairs servants from 1910 to 1929.

While you can still enjoy the book if you haven't watched the series, fans of Downton Abbey will recognize all the characters and most of the hijinks.

Loved the book (found at our recent library book sale). I had to Google stoat (what a cute little animal). I loved the wit and references to other books, TV shows, and movies - most of which I'd previously read or seen.

I did have a bit of trouble relating some of the cat characters to their TV counterparts, but I think in the end I got it.

I felt this book was much better than Mouseton Abbey.

The idea behind this book is great - Downton Abbey, with all the characters played by cats. A walk through the main storylines, with a cat themed twist.

There are a lot of amusing parts, particularly for fans of the series or cat lovers, but all the bits inbetween drag rather and the overall feeling, once finished, was that it didn't live up to the excitement felt on opening this as a gift.

This was more like a summary of a book, than a novel or even novella. It doesn't even seem like a proper short story.

While there were a few cute changes of words, this was much more boring than it was funny.
