Writer/artist JONATHAN LUNA (THE SWORD, ALEX + ADA) returns for an ONGOING FANTASY SERIES with writer CRYSTAL WOOD (The Black Ballad)!
In a land inspired by Southeast Asia, Princess Anya's new husband Prince Devyan is violently abducted by three giant demons at their wedding. Anya sets out on an epic journey with a growing band of loyal warriors, crossing deadly landscapes and battling horrifying demons. What will she sacrifice to save the man she loves?
JONATHAN LUNA co-created and illustrated THE SWORD, GIRLS, and ULTRA (all Image Comics) with his brother, Joshua Luna. He co-created and illustrated ALEX + ADA with Sarah Vaughn. He wrote and illustrated STAR BRIGHT AND THE LOOKING GLASS (Image Comics). His work also includes the art for SPIDER-WOMAN: ORIGIN (Marvel Comics), written by Brian Michael Bendis and Brian Reed.
Jonathan was born in California and spent most of his childhood overseas, living on military bases in Iceland and Italy. He returned to the United States in his late teens.
Writing and drawing comics since he was a child, he graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Sequential Art.
The world seems interesting but the premise has been done ad nauseam, and Anya's character makes little sense so far. She's been trained to be a queen yet all she does in this issue is put her people and queendom in danger to appear heroic. Hopefully there's a good reason for it because otherwise the character building makes zero sense right from the start.
Whoa this is very well done!!! Can't wait to read the next one.
I bloody love the Southeast Asia theme for this GN. You don't see this very often. Usually the more famous one is from Japan, Korea and China. You hardly see the one from Southeast Asia, we have the very beautiful buildings, culture and designs but for some reason we don't really see much fantasy based from here. I just love love the demons !!! They remind me of the statues I saw in Thailand. Very beautifully created.
Also ....is it bad that I was way more invested in the demons than the main protagonist LOL
I think Prince Devyan is ancient Indian inspired I think. Princess Anya is Thailand/Bali inspired ? I dunno most Southeast Asia ancient designs sometimes looks a bit similar. Anyhow, I loved the whole design concept and the story.
Pretty disappointing for me. I love the setting of a fantasy SE Asia, but the art didn't even feel like it at all. There are no interesting characters; they're all very dull with no quirks or flaws or anything. Which means no room for development. Way too many pages are spent on the parents of the two main characters when that scene didn't even need to be in the story. Overall it was a letdown, even though I did check out the next two issues in the hopes it would get better. Sadly, it did not.
