Secret of Betrayal

Rate this book
When faced with the choice between saving Milo’s life and embracing her destiny, Libby Sparks knew there was only one answer.

Become the Destroyer.

Libby is about to learn that accepting her fate is only the first step in figuring out what being the Destroyer truly means. Libby must reign in and develop her talents while planning to rescue her captive army of Ciphers from the hands of Guardians.

Rescuing the Ciphers is already dangerous enough, but everything becomes even more precarious when Cipher hunter, Braden, pushes his way into Libby’s life. The strange connection they share frightens Libby, but it also pushes her to trust him despite her better judgment. When Libby’s feelings of trust begin to morph into something more, her relationship with Milo isn’t the only thing tested. If she is wrong about Braden’s motives, everyone involved in the Cipher rescue may pay the ultimate price for her mistake.

Well, I spent all the night finishing this one! That, I think, says a little about how I found the story. All the story isn't as fast-moving as the previous one, I think its strength is in really developing the 'world' and the characters that have been created. I also enjoyed the slight twist at the end and am anxiously waiting to read the next book!

Again, I think my major disappointment (if it can be called that) about the book is the romance side of it. I really feel like Libby should be older (although I understand that perhaps if she were, the target audience would feel less able to relate) as it is hard to take her feelings seriously, to be honest. Also, I didn't enjoy all the deception, lies and cheating in the romance department- makes me view her as immature and adds to the feeling of not being able to take her feelings seriously. I do like Braden although I think Milo's character took quite an abrupt change and it is harder to discern the qualities that made him likable in the first place (which is probably the intention). On a similar subject, another reason why I think Libby should be older is because Braden is 22 and the idea of a 16 and 22 year old together, having a serious relationship/feelings, is implausible in my mind as well as a little odd.

BUT, despite the romance thing I did enjoy the main plot a lot as it introduced enough new elements to keep the interest without losing its way. A few grammar mistakes but nothing noticeable, it was an easy read from that perspective.

Looking forward to the next book!

****Spoilers contained in this review****

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

Secret of Betrayal is the second book in the Destroyer trilogy and follows on pretty much where Inquest finished off.

Now Libby (Cassia the Destroyer) knows about the Ciphers and where they are being kept prisoner, she has to come up with a plan to rescue them from the clutches of the Guardians. In this book she manages gain a few more friends to help her with her destiny. Cole - who has a cipher in his family, Casey - who Libby helps when she's attacked by some renegade Ciphers in the Spirit World and most importantly Braden - the Seeker who tried to attack and arrest Milo. With the discovery of a prophecy regarding her destiny Libby has to try and understand just what exactly her path should be.

The selling point of this instalment is the relationship between Libby and the three guys in her life - Lance, Milo and Braden. Lance reverts back to being her best friend in this book. He comes to the conclusion that he will never get back together with Libby after his betrayal following her Inquest when he tried to kill her. After giving her his Guardian Oath he was able to prove to Libby that he was mistaken to do what he did and that he believes in her destiny and what she must do in order to make things right in the world. I really loved how close they were able to get without it becoming romantic in any way shape or form. He became the one person she could tell everything to and be a sounding board for the issues she was facing in her relationships with Milo and Braden. They managed to get back to being best friends - which they were before becoming boyfriend/girlfriend - and I think that this was important.

Milo seemed to change in this book. Once he had his Inquest performed by Libby and she unlocked his 6 talents he seems to become a different person. In the first book he was totally focused on Libby and helping her and she was always the most important thing in his life. In this book, his focus was completely on the Guardians and how to bring them down and free the Ciphers and Libby seemed to become an afterthought almost. At first I was a bit put out about this change in him but as I continued with the book I saw that this was a necessary development for him to progress the story. Where all Libby wanted was a future with him, where they didn't have to think about destiny etc. and could just concentrate on being together, Milo had other ideas. He couldn't think that far ahead - he was too focused on the mission in hand.

Then we have Braden - I was really unsure about this guy to start with. But thanks to DelSheree's writing I really grew to like him over Milo and this took me by surprise. Braden seemed to really understand Libby and their connection was a complication especially where Milo was concerned. It took me quite a while to trust him and was never really certain whether he would betray Libby or not especially after finding out about the prophecy and knowing that one of her friends would betray her. Libby's reaction at the end of the book was very telling and showed the depth of her feelings for him. It will be interesting to see what happens with this in the next book.

In the first book I was definitely Team Milo but after this second one I've switched to Team Braden - something that I've never done with a series.

I also had a lot of sympathy for Mr Walters at end (I don't want to say too much on this and spoil the ending) and ended up feeling a lot of empathy for him and the situation that they all found themselves in.

I am very much looking forward to the conclusion of this series to see what happens with the Ciphers and just exactly what Libby has to do to fulfil her destiny and just what that destiny is.

Libby is back and she’s better than ever!

In the second installment of the Destroyer trilogy, Secret of Betrayal, by Delsheree Gladden, Libby has once again found herself in the middle of all of the kerfuffle with the government due to her status at the sole member of the Destroyer class. In this sequel, we learn about those whose gifts don’t appear upon an Inquest who are referred to as Ciphers. Their role in Libby’s destiny to destroy the world isn't initially clear but eventually becomes clearer as further details are revealed as the plot progresses. (The slow and carefully planned out unveiling of these details made me wish that I were able to sit down and read this in one sitting. But alas, life sometimes gets in the way.)

Libby has made progress in this leg of the story as a main character. She’s come to terms with being the Destroyer and she is working on discovering what she can about Ciphers, what they are and how they have anything to do with her and her status. I can definitely say that I am rooting for Libby to make it through this and shake things up around her while doing it. She also is able to explore her gifts a lot more, which gives more insight into what can be done with them and what things that only Libby seems to be able to do.

What I love about this book is that it really gets into what role Libby plays in this society/world and how she poses a threat to those who want to maintain the status quo. I found myself constantly learning more and more about this society and how it worked (or perhaps doesn't work. It really depends of your view). This layering and linking between Inquest and Secret of Betrayal kept me on my toes while reading, which I definitely appreciated. That being said, unfortunately for Libby, her boy-drama gets amped up this time round, which just adds a more teenaged-drama element to the book. There’s Lance, the ex, Milo the current boyfriend and Braden, whom we met at the end of Inquest, who wants to be with Libby even though it conflicts with his Guardian status. I personally go back and forth between all three as to whom I hope she chooses at the end. I couldn't imagine having to make that choice personally but I have hope that she’ll make the right choice in the end. I’m actually glad for this distraction. It keeps everything from being too heavy but it doesn't distract from the main issue at hand: Libby’s’ destiny.

Another thing about the book that I enjoyed, but had sort of love/hate thoughts about was waiting to see when the betrayal part of the title would come into play. I’m not the most patient individual so on many occasions I had pondered who would eventually betray Libby and how mad I’d be about it. I can definitely say that I didn't see it coming and I’m glad that I didn't predict it.

I also enjoyed the addition of many secondary characters this time round. There are many individuals who were sympathetic to Libby and her cause and I liked learning about them and their motives. I was secretly relieved when these individuals began appearing because I feel strongly that Libby is doing the right thing and I hated seeing her out on a limb by herself. Misery loves company, you know? I hope that she continues to garner support and that she ultimately wins.

For the sequel, I can say that I look forward to seeing how Libby’s journey comes to an end and how this trilogy wraps up. I have no idea what will happen but I look forward to being surprised.

*I received the copy in exchange of an honest review.*
This series is taking a serious turn and has me on edge of my bed. I just couldn't post my review as my net was not working, it's good I wrote down what I felt. I will post the same thing.
Darn! it ended :( but I don't mind *evil grin* I've third book to devour.
It is continuation of first and it so awesome, with Libby accepting what she is and embracing being The Destroyer; Cassia and with determination to help Ciphers. As the story progresses, it gets more complicated, how and what they were told was all faux. It's brilliantly well written and when you get out after finishing, you will realize you read the whole book in one sitting. It's captivating and filled with mystery and suspense and romance. I don't have words to write my emotions I felt throughout the book and aftermath of finishing reading it.
When I first read Inquest, after completing I zoomed to Smashwords to read first 20% of the book which after being through 3 chaps I realized it was third book. For that I stalled reading the Trilogy, till I forgot details. So I started now book two is out of the way and on book three.
I just can't put in words, and scared and excited about book three, it will end and afraid to let it go.
I don't want to dislike Milo and want Libby with him but Branden is that awesome, with whole things to find out and the chaos and anticipation, the prophecy and decision to choose between Braden and Milo it's a whole roller coaster ride.
The betrayal, I'd never have guessed it would be him and I don't feel betrayed with Libby.
Beauty in aftermath of Destruction. This line just stuck with me and I believe in it too.
It's definitely a must read

Secret of Betrayal is the sequel to Book 1 of The Destroyer Trilogy and Gladden jumps right back in to Libby's story. I love that Libby hasn't changed much. Even though she's accepting her fate as the Destroyer, she's still independent, strong, and speaks her mind without being overly aggressive or annoying. She's a character that it is easy to root for.

While Inquest dealt mainly with Libby coming to terms with what being the Destroyer means to the rest of the world, Secret of Betrayal delves into the hidden role she plays and the mystery of why the Guardians fear her so much. Libby's trust in everyone is questioned as their motives are as secret as what she is supposed to do with her gifts. Gladden does an awesome job of building an in-depth plot without making it so overly stuffed that it feels as if your lost in details.

Secret brings in Braden, who was introduced at the end of Inquest. I have to admit I am really torn over his character's presence and the role he plays. He definitely is the third point in the a love triangle with Libby and Milo, and I can see the attraction. But I love Libby and Milo. Milo in the first book is the only one who stands by Libby. But in book 2 he seems like a completely different character, so much that I wanted to reach into the pages and strangle him. It makes me very curious how Gladden is going to resolve this triangle in a way that not only makes sense, but also keeps the readers satisfied.

Overall, this is an amazing continuation of The Destroyer Trilogy, and I can't wait to read the final book!

Absolutely Amazing! I loved it! Fabulous story!! A MUST READ! Another 5 star book by Mrs Gladden and another favorite to add to my very short list.

I love the characters, every single one of them. But there is something pretty fantasic about Libby. Who knew "the destroyer" would be so kind, so loving and so honorable! Libby is the kind of young woman who should be a role model for all women. She makes mistakes but learns from them. She's smart and sees the best in people. People say she is evil/bad/"destroyer" and she tries to prove them wrong. She stands her ground and fights for what she believes in. We need more role models like this!!

This book centers around trust and betrayal (hence the name). Libby doesn't know who to trust, so as the reader I was trying to figure it out myself (when not completely entranced in the story). I had my ideas of who to trust and who not to, but Mrs Gladden never really let me figure it out. First, because I was so wrapped up in the story I didn't have time to time about it. And second, because its not really what you think... I love that. I thought I knew what might happen, I thought I knew who not to trust... But lets just say, I started looking at all the characters a little differently in this book. Lots of twists and such a crazy good plot. I loved every minute of reading this story.

Best second-book-of-a-trilogy ever!! No fluff, no fill-in, no nonsense. Just an extension of book 1. Fantastic!

I was given a free e copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Excellent second book in the trilogy. Libby is strong and independent, but her destiny requires help. She has Lance, the exboyfriend who tried to kill her, Milo her current love interest, and Braden the new guy. Braden is part of the group who is trying to kill Libby to prevent her destroying the world, but he also is in love with her. While this book unfolds the details of the Destroyer legend, the reader alternately roots for Milo, Braden, and even Lance to triumph in her affections. Highly recommended!

After reading the first book of this series I had high hopes for this book and I can definitely say that Gladden didn't disappoint! There are interesting twists which you don’t see coming. Without spoiling too much the person that betrays Libby caught me by surprise and was not who I was expecting at all. I love how the plot thickens and the ending is left at a cliff hanger which will definitely make me read the final book. Cannot wait to see how this story will end. :)

Secrets of Betrayal by LK Shaw

This is the second book that I have read by LK Shaw , the first being Secrets of Submission. This one makes me want to go back and read all of her books. The depth of character development of Phebe and her story line grabbed me so I couldn’t put it down.

Thank you LK for sharing this story with us.

I think every author would love to create a book that you won’t want to put down. When it’s all said and done, this book falls into that category, but probably for the wrong reason. As in Inquest, the plot was outstanding … between a 4 and a 4.5. Unfortunately, in Secret of Betrayal, the people I had come to know and love in the first book changed DRASTICALLY, so much so that I would rate characterization just under a 2. As a result, I am averaging those two ratings and giving the book a total of 3 stars.

Plot:
As Libby and her friends start making plans to rescue the Ciphers, she tries to develop her talents (especially Spiritualism) and learn more about what her role as the Destroyer is. At the same time, Braden – the Guardian who tried to arrest Milo – begins to show up everywhere. She’s torn because she needs Braden’s help, and she feels a strange connection to him, but she also still loves Milo. When the prophecy reveals that someone close to her is going to betray her, she figures it must be Milo or Braden. She also knows that if she chooses to trust the wrong person, everyone could die.

Characters:
In my review of Inquest, I gushed about what an amazing heroine Libby was and about how thoughtful and kind Milo was. I loved their relationship because they were so sweet together. Everything completely changes in Secret of Betrayal. Libby, while constantly professing how much she loves Milo and would never hurt him, can’t stop lusting over the ever-present Braden. If her indecision weren’t bad enough, she made matters worse by picking apart every single thing that Milo did. In Libby’s defense, Milo wasn’t as thoughtful or present as he was in the first book, but in Milo’s defense, he was only doing the things that Libby asked him to do.

Braden, on the other hand, did the exact opposite of everything Libby asked him to do, justifying his actions by saying he knew those were just words and not how she really felt. I’m not really sure why Libby was so fascinated with Braden. Other than the strange connection they share, he really doesn’t have much of a personality. I’d like to say I probably wouldn’t have minded if Libby and Braden ended up together if Milo’s character hadn’t been totally desecrated in the process. But that’s not even true. Libby is 16, and Braden is 22. It may just be because I’m the mother of an almost 16 year-old daughter, but that just seems wrong to me.

On a side note, one character does come out smelling like a rose. Ironically, it’s Lance, the guy who tried to kill Libby….

Writing:
The editing was pretty good, and while a couple of characters mention their desire to have sex, none actually takes place. There’s also little to no cursing.

The Bottom Line:
Secret of Betrayal has tons of action and suspense that keep the book moving from beginning to end. While I liked the book, because of the incredible changes in the characters, I found myself less invested than I had been in Inquest. Everyone was so different that at times, I was too busy feeling betrayed to care about who was betraying Libby. I guess it doesn't really matter though. I have already started the third book, Darkening Chaos, so I can see how everything turns out.

I loved the first book when I read it a few years ago and I find myself wishing that I had completed the trilogy at the time instead of leaving it this long. The reason is, at that time I loved YA dystopia and couldn't read enough of it, the tropes didn't bother me as much and had I read it then I might've enjoyed the book. However over the last 18 months I grew tired of the same tropes in every book I picked up and it totally switched me off YA books in general so that now I hardly read them. I was a bit concerned that it would affect my enjoyment of this book and sadly I was right.

The book starts with Libby assessing the situation and trying to learn how to contact the Ciphers to build her army. I was hoping that the focus of the book would be on Libby developing her powers and working with the resistance but it didn't seem to go that way at all. We get told that she tries to contact the spirit world and fails despite help from Milo's mother but we don't really see it happening and she makes no progress. There is a lot of Libby sitting about in classes but nothing about her learning anything and we don't see Mr Walker. The closest we get to the resistance is Cipher families leaving Face book messages of support and a kid offering help from eight families in the local area. That was all I saw about The Destroyer side of things in the first 80 pages which was disappointing.

Instead it was all about the YA angst between the main characters. It is annoying enough that Milo and Lance can't put their feeling aside to work properly as a team. Instead they bitch and whine about each other all the time, forcing Libby to continually tell them to behave, reminding Lance that she won't date him again and acting like an umpire in their petty squabbles. The two of them act like spoiled kids so it's no real surprise that Libby isn't moving forward with any kind of plan when her protectors spend all their time trying to outdo each other. Milo and Lance seem to sulk all the time which is very boring and Lance continually demands to know when Libby is with Milo and who she is sleeping with. It is really annoying!

Yes that was bad enough but then we get Braden deciding that he wants to help too. Of course there is some kind of strange attraction between them which smacks of more instaluv and looks like it could move the love triangle dynamic to a love square which is beyond my patience. Braden is also a complete asshat, behaving the way Lance did in the first book and making me want to kill him. He taunts Libby by proving she isn't strong enough to make him go away, turns up everywhere to unsettle her, and flirts non stop with her despite her complaining it makes him uncomfortable. He is behaving like a childish moron instead of a Guardian.

I got tired of everyone fighting with each other and sulky love interests on every page. I wanted to hear more about The Destroyer but I wasn't willing to wade through all the YA angst and cliches to get to it. Disappointed as I had high hopes for this based on book one.

In this second book, we learn more about Ciphers and the plan to free them. We also see Libby growing more into her role and maturing. However, she's still only 16 and while the book was interesting, I really wish the love triangle was left out.

I'm not really sure what it is about young adult books and the need for a love triangle. Is it emphasize their youth and how they are not in tune with their emotions? No offense, but as an adult reading books about teenage love triangles, it's all just a little ridiculous. Because I just really don't have much respect for someone who's so out of it with their own feelings that they think they are actually equally in love with two completely different people. So some of my disgust with the teenage love triangle isn't just directed at this book, but stems with other books in this genre that all have this same theme. But a lot of it is also justifiably directed at this specific book.

Libby is completely not believeable when she claims again and again that she LOVES Milo because her actions belie her statements. And I hate the idea of a Companion because it makes it seem like Libby has no choice. But that's such a cop out to me and that's precisely why I feel that these teenage characters don't know what they're feeling. Honestly, Libby seems like a typical teenage girl whose hormones are just out of wack. She laughs at Celia for beeing boy-crazy, but Libby doesn't reealy seem much different. I was happy to see that she resolved her feelings and relationship with Lance, which ended up being a really beautiful friendship. But, the relationship with Lance, and her growing relationship with Braden, should have pointed out exactly what was all wrong with Milo. She's keeping secrets from him constantly. Sure, she rationlizes them on the basis that Milo is going to freak out, but she needs to deal with that too. If Milo is so out of control that he can't grow up and make decisions based on others and not just his own desires, then that is not a healthy relationship.

And, I'll also just state that I wasn't really comfortable with the relationship between 22-year-old Braden and 16-year-old Libby. When she's 20 and he's 26, I won't have a problem with it. But right now? Eew. Just so wrong on so many different levels.

Aside from the silly love triangle, I enjoyed the new characters that were introduced and watching Libby's little band of renegades grow, both in number, strength, and purpose. I just wish that the love triangle wasn't so front and center.

**** Spoilers ahead **********I haven't written a review in years (except for a couple of short sentences but this book just compelled me to write

I really really liked the first book but am very disappointed in this one. The idea of a love triangle is bad enough in itself, but imagine adding a 4th person into the mix. It's so ridiculous that it's laughable. Does every guy who doesn't want to kill Libby fall into instant love and need to swear an oath??? By the way, all the swooning, oath taking guys are gorgeous, toned and perfect. Whatever.

In the first book, there was a quiet likable quality to Libby. She is caring, loyal, and vulnerable but strong. In this book, she is backstabbing, wishy washy and stupid. She ends up basically cheating and lying to Milo while telling herself it's because she doesn't want to hurt him. I thought she was pathetic and despicable. The only thing stopping me from giving it 1 star is that the story was actually exciting and interesting despite the annoyance of the main character. I *think* I'm still willing to read book 3 to see what happens but I may need a break to get this witless, worthless woman out of my mind. Hoping I can finish the series without immediately losing all respect for the author. Ugh.

BTW, Braden is 22, kind of hard to believe he hangs out with 16 year olds, let alone steals the 16 year old girlfriend of one of the 16 year olds. That is called a felony. Double ugh.

Second installment of the Destroyer Trilogy. A lot of new Characters are introduced and we see the development of some old characters. It hasn't been even a year since the Inquest of Libby revealed her as the Destroyer. Now she has found that her destiny is not only overthrow the regimen of the Guardians, she has to rebuild a new one over the ashes of it and she has an army to do that.

After Libby finally accepts her destiny as the Destroyer we see her grow and put an effort to develop her ability that she had neglected; her Spiritualism. As in any other YA book, we see her struggle with her power and boy problems. We see her grow from the little girl that was reluctant of her destiny to the, well still little girl but now with the responsibility of nearly two thousands other people lives on her hands.

The story is still pretty interesting. All this destiny talking and promises of ultimate destruction are quite alluring, but still we don't know how it is that she will destroy the world.

My Verdict... 4 stars; the books ends with a cliffhanger, actually is a good one, I was going to read the last book anyway so I don't mind the cliffhanger this time. A good book; the boy problems of this 16-year-old girl are part of the story although actually is toned down a little and she is not sighing 24/7 and exuding honey every moment.

Secret of Betrayal by DelSheree Gladden held me spell bound. It is the second book of the Destroyer Trilogy and I cannot wait to read the next installment. I found myself staying up way too late to see if they were going to be successful in freeing the Ciphers. There was a twist or two that I did not see coming.
The characters in this book are not your typical teenagers in that they have special powers. Their attitudes however were spot on. I kept waiting on fist fights to break out between Milo and Lance. Then you throw in Brendon and it is surprising that they were all able to work together. Libby does not always make the right decisions, but that is part of being a teenager and she has a lot of tough decisions to make.
I give this book 4 stars. I found it to be very entertaining and outside of the mainstream. It was something different to read and now I will not stop until I have read all three books. I like this author’s writing style so much that I have already purchased some of her other books.

The author gave me this book for a review on the first book.

This was an amazing book and I was sad when I came to the end of it. I couldn't put it down and need to read the third book desperately to find out what is going to happen and if Libby gets her request for a half normal life.

The characters developed and matured and the plots thickened and have you gripped in their web. I couldn't wait to find out what is going to happen to those poor lost souls so I had to finish the book although I didn't want it to end. I was so sure at one point that I knew who the traitor was and just before everything unraveled I knew I was wrong. But I still feel that he is going to be the traitor in her army. I will have to read book 3 to find out if I'm wrong :)

As with the first book the spelling and grammar in some places can be reviewed but other than that this was a fantastic book and worth the 5 stars!

Loved Inquest, but is it even possible to love book two even more? I swear that I couldn't stop reading this book. I absolutely love how characters change and how some grow together and its just full of action and emotions that I couldn't handle, but that happens when you are still reading at two in the morning. Totally cried at the end, since I became to love Braden so I,m dying to read the third book. This is a definetely a must read book, I swear is was worth the time reading. Loved it!
I also loved how Lances and Libbys friendship grows and her realtionshi with Braden is AGHH so cute! I swear I had to stop reading and smile form time to time because I just loved them!
Again excellent job on book two! Usually the sequel has to even be better than the first book and you aced it!

I was disappointed with this one.
Minor Spoilers.............
I really liked Milo in the first book but got really annoyed with him in this book. I didn't like the author completely changing Mill's personality just to make way for Braden in the storyline. I love Braden's character but didn't think Milo had to become such a jerk. The end of this book really irritated me but I will still probably need the last book.

I thought that this book was more than amazing. It was one of the best series ever!!!!!! The plot was great, and the author developed the characters well too! All of the details and just the whole book blew me away! This was way better than the first one since the first one was a bit confusing, this explained everything great and it was so interesting i could not put it down! Ah, readers will love this book and will be hooked like i was ahahhaha :) Seriously though! READ IT!!!!

wow!libby is really having a hard time rescuing the ciphers and deciding on her lovelife???well, this story presents not only doses of fantasy but also reality.in this book,I get a glimpse of libby being a normal teen who gets confused with her feelings towards the opposite sex.I just hope she figures out who and what she really wants sooner.anticipation of what's going to happen next is gnawing my insides right now.can't wait to read book three!

I received Secret of Betrayal as an ARC version from the author. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. Wow! I love this series, and the intricacy of the plot line. Lots of layers in this book, and quite a few surprises too. I've enjoyed the reveals and twists so much I immediately started book 3.
